Purpose: Early detection and intervention are vital for managing type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) effectively. However, it's still unclear which risk factors for T2DM onset are most significant. This study aimed to use cluster analysis to categorize individuals based on six known risk factors, helping to identify high-risk groups requiring early intervention to prevent T2DM onset.

Background: Current guidelines lack recommendations regarding the use of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) for preventing upper gastrointestinal bleeding (UGIB) among patients at low risk for UGIB treated with dual antiplatelet therapy for ischemic stroke (IS). Our objective was to assess the effectiveness of PPIs in lowering the risk of significant UGIB in this patient group.

Methods And Results: A retrospective cohort study was conducted involving patients at low risk for UGIB admitted for IS between 2014 and 2018 and treated with dual antiplatelet therapy.

Sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2i), have shown benefits in patient with heart failure (HF), however, adherence remains a significant issue: with only 60% of patients continuing usage beyond a year. This study aims to identify patients at risk of discontinuing SGLT2i and promote its judicious use to reduce hospitalizations and improve cardiovascular outcomes. Using the Korean National Health Insurance Service database, patients diagnosed with HF and diabetes mellitus (n = 1,665,565) between 2013 and 2018 were identified.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focused on determining reference intervals for serum insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) and IGFBP-3, which are crucial for diagnosing growth hormone-related disorders in children.
  • Researchers reviewed the serum levels of IGF-1 and IGFBP-3 in healthy Korean children aged 0-17, using various immunoassay methods to gather data for establishing reference intervals.
  • The results showed that the reference percentiles for IGF-1 and IGFBP-3 are influenced by the immunoassay method used and highlight the importance of considering age and sex when determining these intervals for accurate assessments.

Background: Although socioeconomic status (SES) is considered a risk factor for cardio-cerebrovascular diseases (CCVDs), few studies have examined this association. In this cross-sectional study, we aimed to assess the prevalence and trends of CCVDs across different SES groups over a 12-year period in a representative Korean population.

Methods: We analysed 47 745 economically active adults aged ≥30 and <65 years from 97 622 patients in the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2007-18), where a new independent sample of the population was examined each year.

Introduction: Childhood obesity is a growing global health concern, but few studies have investigated dietary factors specifically related to obesity and abdominal obesity in children and adolescents. Herein, we aimed to identify the dietary factors affecting childhood obesity in Korean children and adolescents.

Methods: Data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Survey (KNHANES) VIII were analyzed using K-means clustering analysis to identify distinct clusters based on nine variables related to dietary habit, nutritional status, and nutritional education.

Purpose: In cases where rebiopsy fails to find the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) T790M mutation, the criteria for selecting patients for repeated rebiopsy remains unclear. This study aimed to assess the impact of repeated rebiopsy on T790M mutation detection in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients.

Methods: Patients with advanced EGFR-mutated NSCLC between January 2018 and December 2021 at three-referral hospitals in South Korea underwent retrospective review.

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers developed a machine learning model to predict severe radiation pneumonitis (RP) in lung cancer patients by analyzing various clinical, dosimetric, and genetic factors, particularly focusing on the TGF-β1 pathway SNPs.
  • The study involved 59 patients and found that factors like age, smoking history, and specific genetic traits were key predictors of severe RP, with machine learning techniques enhancing prediction accuracy.
  • The final model showed improved prediction performance when including genetic data, achieving an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.822 compared to 0.741 when only clinical data was used, highlighting the model's effectiveness in identifying at-risk patients.

Background: Previous studies have demonstrated conflicting results regarding the effects of rehabilitation therapy on poststroke mortality. We aimed to investigate the association between rehabilitation therapy, including both inpatient and outpatient treatment, within the first 6 months after stroke and long-term all-cause mortality in patients with stroke using the Korean National Health Insurance System data.

Methods: A total of 10 974 patients newly diagnosed with stroke using the , , codes (I60-I64) between 2003 and 2019 were enrolled and followed up for all-cause mortality until 2019.

Background/aims: Achieving rapid reduction of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels below 55 mg/dL in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) can be challenging with statins alone. This single-center, retrospective study aimed to assess the impact of single-dose injection of evolocumab 140 mg on LDL-C levels during the peri-percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) period in patients with AMI.

Methods: A total of 95 patients with AMI who underwent PCI were divided into the evolocumab (n = 50) and non-evolocumab (n = 45) groups.

Background: The oxidative balance score (OBS) is a comprehensive pro- and anti-oxidative marker for assessing the risk of various metabolic diseases and cancers. However, it is not well established whether OBS is related to type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), particularly in elderly populations. Therefore, our objective was to investigate the longitudinal effect of OBS on T2DM in a large cohort of Korean adults aged 60 years and older.
