The oxidation was mediated by the deprotonation of catechol or the addition of an oxidant (ammonium persulfate (AP) or sodium periodate (NaIO)). The oxidation and subsequent molecular transformation of ZW-DOPA was investigated over time by UV-vis spectroscopy.

The designed SAMs underwent the electrochemical oxidation on the gold surface with simultaneous release of the amine molecules. The synthesis of the thiol compounds was achieved by coupling isocyanate-containing compounds with hydroquinone.
