Suppression of antiferromagnetic order by strain-enhanced frustration in honeycomb cobaltate.

Layered honeycomb cobaltates are predicted as promising for realizing the Kitaev quantum spin liquid, a many-body quantum entangled ground state characterized by fractional excitations. However, they exhibit antiferromagnetic ordering at low temperatures, hindering the expected quantum state. We demonstrate that controlling the trigonal distortion of CoO octahedra is crucial to suppress antiferromagnetic order through enhancing frustration in layered honeycomb cobaltates.

Cylindrical depth image based customized helical bone plate design.

Commercial straight metal plates have been generally used to fix fractured bones, but recently, the need for customized and helical metal plates has emerged. Customized metal plates are designed to fit the shape of the fracture area that is a 3D curved surface, making it more difficult than designing on a 2D plane. Helical plates are researched due to their advantage in avoiding blood vessel damage compared to commercially available straight metal plates.

Effects of Mulligan Mobilization and Low-Level Laser Therapy on Physical Disability, Pain, and Range of Motion in Patients with Chronic Low Back Pain: A Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial.

This study aimed to determine the combined treatment effects of Mulligan sustained natural apophyseal glides (SNAGs) and low-level laser therapy (LLLT) on function, pain, and range of motion (ROM) in patients with chronic low back pain. A total of 49 adults participated in this study and were randomly divided into three groups (SNAGs with LLLT group, SNAGs group, and control group). The participants in the SNAGs with LLLT group received SNAGs for 10 min, LLLT for 10 min, and electrotherapy for 10 min.

Background And Objectives: Several studies have suggested that abnormal levels of serum cholesterol may be a major risk factor for osteoarthritis. However, no studies have been conducted to prevent osteoarthritis under controlled conditions of serum cholesterol. This study aimed to examine the relationship of sociodemographic and anthropometric characteristics, and nutrient and food intakes with osteoarthritis prevalence in Korean elderly subjects with controlled dyslipidaemia.

An Algorithm for Computing Side Chain Conformational Variations of a Protein Tunnel/Channel.

In this paper, a novel method to compute side chain conformational variations for a protein molecule tunnel (or channel) is proposed. From the conformational variations, we compute the flexibly deformed shapes of the initial tunnel, and present a way to compute the maximum size of the ligand that can pass through the deformed tunnel. By using the two types of graphs corresponding to amino acids and their side chain rotamers, the suggested algorithm classifies amino acids and rotamers which possibly have collisions.

Ellagitannin and flavonoid constituents from Agrimonia pilosa Ledeb. with their protein tyrosine phosphatase and acetylcholinesterase inhibitory activities.

A new ellagitannin, agritannin (1), a new flavone glycoside, agriflavone (2), and another flavone glycoside with spectroscopic data reported for the first time, kaempferol-3-O-[(S)-3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl (1→6)]-β-d-glucoside (3), along with 16 known compounds were isolated from the aerial parts of Agrimonia pilosa Ledeb. These compounds were evaluated for PTP1B inhibitory activity. Among them, compounds 9 and 18 displayed potential inhibitory activity against PTP1B with IC values of 7.

Flavanonol glucosides from the aerial parts of Agrimonia pilosa Ledeb. and their acetylcholinesterase inhibitory effects.

Two new flavanonol glucoside isomers, (2R,3S)-dihydrokaempferol 3-O-β-D-glucoside (1) and (2S,3R)-dihydrokaempferol 3-O-β-D-glucoside (2), were isolated from the aerial parts of Agrimonia pilosa Ledeb., along with eight known flavanonol glucosides (3-10). Their structures were determined on the basis of spectroscopic analysis.

Simultaneous analysis of seven marker compounds from Saposhnikoviae Radix, Glehniae Radix and Peucedani Japonici Radix by HPLC/PDA.

A new combination of high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method coupled with photodiode array (PDA) analysis has been developed for the simultaneous quantitative determination of seven major components in Saposhnikoviae Radix (SR), Glehniae Radix (GR) and Peucedani Japonici Radix (PR), namely peucedanol 7-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (1), prim-O-glucosylcimifugin (2), cimifugin (3), 4'-O-β-D-glucosyl-5-O-methylvisamminol (4), bergapten (5), sec-O-glucosylhamaudol (6), and imperatorin (7). Clear separation of these seven components were achieved on a Phenomenex Kinetex C18 (250 × 4.6 mm, 5 μm) column by gradient elution of water (A) and methanol (B) as mobile phase.

Quality evaluation and pattern recognition analyses of bioactive marker compounds from Farfarae Flos using HPLC/PDA.

The flower bud of Tussilago farfara L., called Farfarae Flos, has traditionally been used in Oriental medicine for the treatment of bronchitis and asthma. To establish a standard for quality control as well as the reliable identification of Farfarae Flos, the contents of five standards, rutin (1), isoquercetin (2), 3,5-dicaffeoylquinic acid (3), tussilagone (4), and tussilagonone (5), were determined by quantitative high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC)/photodiode array (PDA) analysis.

Calcium-sensing receptor and apoptosis in parathyroid hyperplasia of patients with secondary hyperparathyroidism.

Objective: This retrospective study investigated the characteristics of secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT) by examining the presence of the calcium-sensing receptor (CaSR) and the rate of cell proliferation and apoptosis in parathyroid glands.

Methods: Eighteen diffuse and 57 nodular hyperplastic parathyroid glands from 24 patients with SHPT were compared with 14 primary adenomas and 33 normal parathyroid glands using immunohistochemical staining of CaSR and a marker of proliferative activity (Ki67 antigen). Apoptosis was measured using the terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated deoxyuridine triphosphate nick end labelling assay.

An exploratory study of gold wire implantation at acupoints to accelerate ulnar fracture healing in rats.

By causing long-term stimulation, gold wire implantation at acupoints has been used empirically to prolong the effects of acupuncture. This study shows that subcutaneous gold wire implantation at acupoints has long-term effects on bone regeneration in the rat ulna bone defect model.

Flower extract of Panax notoginseng attenuates lipopolysaccharide-induced inflammatory response via blocking of NF-kappaB signaling pathway in murine macrophages.

Aim Of The Study: The root of Panax notoginseng (PN) is commonly used to treat chronic liver disease with its therapeutic abilities to stop haemorrhage in the circulation, while the PN flower (PN-F) is largely unknown in the biological activities on inflammation and mechanisms of its actions. In this study, the pharmacologic effects of PN-F methanol extract on inflammation were investigated to address potential therapeutic or toxic effects in LPS-stimulated mouse macrophage cells, RAW264.7 cells.

Laparoscopic resection of a hepatocellular carcinoma arising from an ectopic liver.

Ectopic livers are rarely seen intra-abdominal lesions. Ectopic hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) can be defined as an HCC arising from hepatic parenchyma located in an extrahepatic organ or tissue. The authors report a case of a primary, well-differentiated HCC arising from ectopic liver tissue in the left subphrenic space at the upper portion of the gastrorenal ligament that was successfully treated by laparoscopic resection.

Laparoscopic treatment of a huge cystic lymphangioma: partial aspiration technique with a spinal needle.

A cystic lymphangioma is a rare intra-abdominal lesion. Treatment is a complete excision of the cyst because of complications and a rare chance of malignancy. In this paper we report on 2 patients with a huge cystic lymphangioma who were treated by laparoscopic surgery successfully.

Effects of baicalin and wogonin on mucin release from cultured airway epithelial cells.

Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi has been used for the treatment of diverse chronic inflammatory diseases including respiratory disease in oriental medicine and its major components - baicalin, baicalein and wogonin - were reported to have various biological effects. This study investigated whether baicalin, baicalein and wogonin affect basal and ATP-induced mucin release from cultured airway epithelial cells. Confluent primary hamster tracheal surface epithelial (HTSE) cells were metabolically radiolabeled using (3)H-glucosamine for 24 h and chased for 30 min in the presence of varying concentrations of each agent to assess the effects on (3)H-mucin release.

Carbenoxolone and triterpenoids inhibited mucin secretion from airway epithelial cells.

This study investigated whether carbenoxolone, oleanolic acid and ursolic acid affect ATP-induced mucin secretion from cultured airway epithelial cells. Confluent primary hamster tracheal surface epithelial (HTSE) cells were metabolically radiolabeled using (3)H-glucosamine for 24 h and chased for 30 min in the presence of varying concentrations of each agent to assess the effects on (3)H-mucin secretion. The possible cytotoxicity of each agent was investigated with a lactate dehydrogenase assay.

Large-scale and effective screening of Korean medicinal plants for inhibitory activity on matrix metalloproteinase-9.

Matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) degrades type IV collagen constituting the major structural component of the basement membrane and extra cellular membrane. The enzymatic activity is found to be elevated in tumor tissues. With the aim of finding novel MMP-9 inhibitors from natural products, 87 extracts of oriental medicinal herbs, which are used as prescriptions for cancer treatment in traditional Korean medicine, were screened for their inhibitory activities towards MMP-9.
