Article Synopsis
  • Sugarcane is a key commercial crop for producing sugar, bioethanol, and other products, but traditional breeding methods are slow and expensive.
  • The study utilized association mapping to find quantitative trait loci (QTLs) and genes linked to sucrose and yield traits using a panel of 110 sugarcane genotypes and 148 microsatellite primers.
  • A total of 24 significant QTLs were discovered, with potential candidate genes identified that could enhance sugarcane breeding programs through advanced techniques like genome editing.

Globally, Eucalyptus plantations occupy 22 million ha area and is one of the preferred hardwood species due to their short rotation, rapid growth, adaptability and wood properties. In this study, we present results of GWAS in parents and 100 hybrids of Eucalyptus tereticornis × E. grandis using 762 genes presumably involved in wood formation.

Article Synopsis
  • Chloroplast genome sequencing helps understand genome evolution and phylogenetic relationships, utilizing methods like chloroplast enrichment and extraction from whole-genome datasets.
  • The study introduces a cost-effective method using leaf transcriptome data and the bowtie2 program to extract and assemble chloroplast-specific reads, which requires less computational resources.
  • This approach allows for a near-complete chloroplast genome assembly that improves phylogenetic studies, species identification, and aids in developing plants with better resilience to environmental challenges.
