Introduction: Early salvage radiotherapy is indicated for patients with biochemical recurrence after radical prostatectomy. However, for various reasons, certain patients do not benefit from this treatment (OBS) or only at a late stage (LSR). There are few studies on this subject and none on a "high-risk" population, such as patients of African descent.

Skeletal muscle is populated with a reservoir of quiescent muscle stem cells (MuSCs), which regenerate the tissue after injury. Here, we show that the adhesion G-protein-coupled receptor Gpr116 is essential for long-term maintenance of the MuSC pool. Quiescent MuSCs express high levels of Gpr116, which is rapidly downregulated upon MuSC activation.

Introduction: Women identified as high-risk for breast cancer may choose between close follow-up and radical mastectomy. Prophylactic mastectomy, as any other surgery, is associated with benefits and harms. The aim of this study was to assess the morbidity associated with prophylactic mastectomy and to evaluate the prevalence of occult cancers.

Introduction And Objectives: Metastatic hormone-sensitive prostate cancer (mHSPC) accounts for 12% of prostate cancers diagnosed in Guadeloupe according to the Guadeloupean cancer registry. Most published studies have been conducted on the Caucasian population, whereas data concerning mHSPC in the Afro-Caribbean population are lacking. We aimed to describe the patient characteristics and estimate the progression-free survival of men with mHSPC in an Afro-Caribbean population according to the available treatment.

Bacteria form multicellular and resistant structures named biofilms. Biofilm formation starts with the attachment phase, and the molecular actors involved in this phase, except adhesins, are poorly characterized. There is growing evidence that phospholipids are more than simple structural bricks.

Lipopolysaccharides (LPS) constitute the outermost layer of Gram-negative bacteria and consequently play an important role in bacterial infections. In order to address public health issues posed by Gram-negative bacteria, it is necessary to elucidate the structure of the molecular actors at the forefront of infections. LPS virulence and toxicity are partially modulated by lipid A, a hydrophobic saccharolipid that anchors LPS to the bacterial outer membrane.

Article Synopsis
  • Young breast cancer patients with BRCA pathogenic variants show similar outcomes as non-carriers, but the effects of gene type (BRCA1 vs. BRCA2) and hormone receptor status (positive vs. negative) on their clinical outcomes are not well understood.
  • An international study of 1,236 young mBRCA patients revealed that BRCA1 carriers had higher rates of second primary cancers but less frequent distant recurrences compared to BRCA2 carriers.
  • The findings highlight the significant influence of gene type and hormone receptor status on breast cancer behavior, offering essential insights for better patient counseling regarding treatment and prevention.

Introduction: Five to 10% of breast cancers (BCs) occur in a genetic predisposition context (mainly pathogenic variant). Nevertheless, little is known about immune tumor infiltration, response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC), pathologic complete response (pCR) and adverse events according to status.

Material And Methods: Out of 1199 invasive BC patients treated with NAC between 2002 and 2012, we identified 267 patients tested for a germline pathogenic variant.

Lipid A is a major compound of the outer membrane of gram-negative bacteria and is a key factor of bacterial virulence. As lipid A's structure differs among bacterial species and varies between strains of the same species, knowing its modifications is essential to understand its implications in the infectious process. To analyze these lipids, matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-mass spectrometry (MALDI-MS) is a well-suited method that is fast and efficient.

Purpose: Young women with germline mutations have unique reproductive challenges. Pregnancy after breast cancer does not increase the risk of recurrence; however, very limited data are available in patients with mutations. This study investigated the impact of pregnancy on breast cancer outcomes in patients with germline mutations.

Biofilms have significance in medical, industrial, and environmental settings, and can cause important damage. As biofilms are tolerant to various stresses, including antibiotics, it is necessary to better understand their formation. For this reason, we characterized the phospholipidome of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, an opportunistic pathogen involved in numerous infections, during the first steps of the biofilm development.

Biofilms are present in all environments and often result in negative effects due to properties of the biofilm lifestyle and especially antibiotics resistance. Biofilms are associated with chronic infections. Controlling bacterial attachment, the first step of biofilm formation, is crucial for fighting against biofilm and subsequently preventing the persistence of infection.

The insula is now regarded as a potential site of epileptogenesis in drug-resistant epilepsy, and the advent of microsurgical techniques has allowed insular cortectomy to become a treatment of choice when the insular cortex is involved in the seizure focus. However, considering the evidence of an insular role in socio-emotional processing, it remains unknown whether these cortical resections disturb personality and social behavior as experienced in daily life. We examined such changes in a group of patients (n=19) who underwent epilepsy surgery involving partial or complete resection of the insula, and compared them to a group of patients who underwent standard temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) surgery (n=19) as a lesion-control group.

Besides its widely described function in the innate immune response, no other clear physiological function has been attributed so far to the Liver-Expressed-Antimicrobial-Peptide 2 (LEAP2). We used the Xenopus embryo model to investigate potentially new functions for this peptide. We identified the amphibian leap2 gene which is highly related to its mammalian orthologues at both structural and sequence levels.

In France, women carrying BRCA1/2 mutation, at an identified high risk of breast cancer are recommended to undergo breast MRI screening. That screening does not however prevent the risk of developing a breast cancer. The only alternative to breast cancer screening available in France is surgical prevention by prophylactic mastectomy.
