Article Synopsis
  • Malignant tumors of the temporal bone are rare, with an incidence of about 0.8-1.0 per million people per year, primarily consisting of primary tumors, while metastases are uncommon and present nonspecific symptoms such as hearing loss and vertigo.
  • The case study highlights a 44-year-old man who exhibited a right mastoid swelling and grade VI facial nerve palsy as initial indicators of small cell lung carcinoma metastasizing to the temporal bone.
  • The findings suggest that while osteolytic lesions in older patients may indicate primary tumors, they should also raise suspicions of metastases, particularly from cancers like breast or lung cancer in smoking individuals.

It has also been described to be expressed in several malignancies such as lung, digestive, prostate and renal carcinomas suggesting it has a potential role in carcinogenesis.  In thyroid carcinoma, Ep-CAM expression has rarely been studied especially in papillary thyroid carcinoma.
