Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess diaphragm muscle mass, strength, and quality in pediatric patients with primary malnutrition using conventional ultrasound (US) and shear wave elastography (SWE).
  • Researchers compared diaphragm thickness and stiffness between 62 malnourished children and 53 healthy controls, finding significant reductions in the malnourished group.
  • The results suggest that US and SWE may be useful tools for diagnosing and monitoring sarcopenia, but further studies are needed to validate these findings.

Article Synopsis
  • A study evaluated 150 mechanically ventilated pediatric patients to see if standardized mortality scores could accurately predict their risk of death.
  • It was found that the Pediatric Risk of Mortality (PRISM) III-24 and Pediatric Index of Mortality (PIM)-2 scores were not effective in distinguishing between survivors and nonsurvivors, as the actual mortality rate was lower than expected.
  • The Oxygenation Index (OI) measurements taken at various intervals indicated that higher OI levels at 12 and 72 hours were associated with nonsurvivors, suggesting that OI may be a better indicator of respiratory failure and mortality risk than the standardized scores.
