Development of Periapical Index Score Classification System in Periapical Radiographs Using Deep Learning.

Periapical index (PAI) scoring system is the most popular index for evaluating apical periodontitis (AP) on radiographs. It provides an ordinal scale of 1 to 5, ranging from healthy to severe AP. Scoring PAI is a time-consuming process and requires experienced dentists; thus, deep learning has been applied to hasten the process.

Ethno-racial inequalities on adverse birth and neonatal outcomes: a nationwide, retrospective cohort study of 21 million Brazilian newborns.

Background: Ethno-racial inequalities are critical determinants of health outcomes. We quantified ethnic-racial inequalities on adverse birth outcomes and early neonatal mortality in Brazil.

Methods: We conducted a cohort study in Brazil using administrative linked data between 2012 and 2019.

NAPping PAnts (NAPPA): An open wearable solution for monitoring Infant's sleeping rhythms, respiration and posture.

Study Objectives: To develop a non-invasive and practical wearable method for long-term tracking of infants' sleep.

Methods: An infant wearable, NAPping PAnts (NAPPA), was constructed by combining a diaper cover and a movement sensor (triaxial accelerometer and gyroscope), allowing either real-time data streaming to mobile devices or offline feature computation stored in the sensor memory. A sleep state classifier (wake, N1/REM, N2/N3) was trained and tested for NAPPA recordings ( = 16649 epochs of 30 s), using hypnograms from co-registered polysomnography (PSG) as a training target in 33 infants (age 2 weeks to 18 months; Mean = 4).

Carbon nanotubes in plant dynamics: Unravelling multifaceted roles and phytotoxic implications.

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have emerged as a promising frontier in plant science owing to their unique physicochemical properties and versatile applications. CNTs enhance stress tolerance by improving water dynamics and nutrient uptake and activating defence mechanisms against abiotic and biotic stresses. They can be taken up by roots and translocated within the plant, impacting water retention, nutrient assimilation, and photosynthesis.

Association of PD-L1 expression with driver gene mutations and clinicopathological characteristics in non-small cell lung cancer: A real-world study of 10 441 patients.

Background: Programmed death ligand-1 (PD-L1) expression is a well-known predictive biomarker of response to immune checkpoint blockade in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). However, there is limited evidence of the relationship between PD-L1 expression, clinicopathological features, and their association with major driver mutations in NSCLC patients in Latin America.

Methods: This retrospective study included patients from Argentina with advanced NSCLC, and centralized evaluation of PD-L1 expression concurrently with genomic alterations in the driver genes EGFR, ALK, ROS1, BRAF, and/or KRAS G12C in FFPE tissue samples.

Rare cancers (RCs), which account for over 20% of cancer cases, face significant research and treatment challenges due to their limited prevalence. This results in suboptimal outcomes compared to more common malignancies. Rare bone tumors (RBTs) constitute 5-10% of rare cancer cases and pose unique diagnostic complexities.

Incidence and risk factors of tuberculosis among 420 854 household contacts of patients with tuberculosis in the 100 Million Brazilian Cohort (2004-18): a cohort study.

Background: Although household contacts of patients with tuberculosis are known to be particularly vulnerable to tuberculosis, the published evidence focused on this group at high risk within the low-income and middle-income country context remains sparse. Using nationwide data from Brazil, we aimed to estimate the incidence and investigate the socioeconomic and clinical determinants of tuberculosis in a cohort of contacts of tuberculosis patients.

Methods: In this cohort study, we linked individual socioeconomic and demographic data from the 100 Million Brazilian Cohort to mortality data and tuberculosis registries, identified contacts of tuberculosis index patients diagnosed from Jan 1, 2004 to Dec 31, 2018, and followed up the contacts until the contact's subsequent tuberculosis diagnosis, the contact's death, or Dec 31, 2018.

The impact of stability in appearance on the development of facial representations.

The way faces become familiar and what information is represented as familiarity develops has puzzled researchers in the field of human face recognition for decades. In this paper, we present three experiments serving as proof of concept for a cost-efficient mechanism of face learning describing how facial representations form over time and accounting for recognition errors. We propose that the encoding of facial information is dynamic and modulated by the intrinsic stability in individual faces' appearance.

Antagonism between wild-type and mutant β-catenin controls hepatoblastoma differentiation via fascin-1.

Background & Aims: β-catenin is a well-known effector of the Wnt pathway, and a key player in cadherin-mediated cell adhesion. Oncogenic mutations of β-catenin are very frequent in paediatric liver primary tumours. Those mutations are mostly heterozygous, which allows the co-expression of wild-type (WT) and mutated β-catenins in tumour cells.

Ethnoracial inequalities and child mortality in Brazil: a nationwide longitudinal study of 19 million newborn babies.

Background: Racism is a social determinant of health inequities. In Brazil, racial injustices lead to poor outcomes in maternal and child health for Black and Indigenous populations, including greater risks of pregnancy-related complications; decreased access to antenatal, delivery, and postnatal care; and higher childhood mortality rates. In this study, we aimed to estimate inequalities in childhood mortality rates by maternal race and skin colour in a cohort of more than 19 million newborns in Brazil.

Rnd3/RhoE is an atypical Rho GTPase family member, known to be deregulated in many types of cancer. Previously, we showed that RND3 expression is downregulated in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cell lines and tissues. In cancer cells, Rnd3 is involved in the regulation of cell proliferation and cell invasion.

Real-world evaluation of molecular testing and treatment patterns for EGFR mutations in non-small cell lung cancer in Latin America.

Lung cancer is a leading cause of cancer-related deaths in Latin America, with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) being the most prevalent. The current study aimed to report real-world data on epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutational testing and treatment regimens at diagnosis and progression in patients with metastatic NSCLC across four Latin American countries (Argentina, Chile, Colombia and Uruguay). A retrospective, multicenter, observational study was conducted in patients with NSCLC using medical records from participating countries.

Conditional cash transfer program and child mortality: A cross-sectional analysis nested within the 100 Million Brazilian Cohort.

Background: Brazil has made great progress in reducing child mortality over the past decades, and a parcel of this achievement has been credited to the Bolsa Família program (BFP). We examined the association between being a BFP beneficiary and child mortality (1-4 years of age), also examining how this association differs by maternal race/skin color, gestational age at birth (term versus preterm), municipality income level, and index of quality of BFP management.

Methods And Findings: This is a cross-sectional analysis nested within the 100 Million Brazilian Cohort, a population-based cohort primarily built from Brazil's Unified Registry for Social Programs (Cadastro Único).

A Newer Technique of Extended Cortical Fixation to Salvage Intratunnel Blowout during Revision Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction - A Case Report.

Introduction: Posterior femur wall blowout and consequent loss of femoral graft fixation are commonly encountered distally at the aperture of the tunnel facing into the joint during anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction. However, intratunnel blowout of femoral tunnel at its outer cortical opening during a revision ACL reconstruction is very rare. It compromises the mechanical strength of the cortical bone at the tunnel opening on lateral cortex, making it weaker for providing stability to endobutton.

Effect of zitterbewegung on the propagation of wave packets in ABC-stacked multilayer graphene: an analytical and computational approach.

The time evolution of a low-energy two-dimensional Gaussian wave packet in ABC-stacked n-layer graphene (ABC-NLG) is investigated. Expectation values of the position (x, y) of center-of-mass and the total probability densities of the wave packet are calculated analytically using the Green's function method. These results are confirmed using an alternative numerical method based on the split-operator technique within the Dirac approach for ABC-NLG, which additionally allows to include external fields and potentials.

CIDACS-RL: a novel indexing search and scoring-based record linkage system for huge datasets with high accuracy and scalability.

Background: Record linkage is the process of identifying and combining records about the same individual from two or more different datasets. While there are many open source and commercial data linkage tools, the volume and complexity of currently available datasets for linkage pose a huge challenge; hence, designing an efficient linkage tool with reasonable accuracy and scalability is required.

Methods: We developed CIDACS-RL (Centre for Data and Knowledge Integration for Health - Record Linkage), a novel iterative deterministic record linkage algorithm based on a combination of indexing search and scoring algorithms (provided by Apache Lucene).

Examining the quality of record linkage process using nationwide Brazilian administrative databases to build a large birth cohort.

Background: Research using linked routine population-based data collected for non-research purposes has increased in recent years because they are a rich and detailed source of information. The objective of this study is to present an approach to prepare and link data from administrative sources in a middle-income country, to estimate its quality and to identify potential sources of bias by comparing linked and non-linked individuals.

Methods: We linked two administrative datasets with data covering the period 2001 to 2015, using maternal attributes (name, age, date of birth, and municipally of residence) from Brazil: live birth information system and the 100 Million Brazilian Cohort (created using administrative records from over 114 million individuals whose families applied for social assistance via the Unified Register for Social Programmes) implementing an in house developed linkage tool CIDACS-RL.

Efficacy and Safety of Nivolumab in Previously Treated Patients With Non-Small-cell Lung Cancer: Real World Experience in Argentina.

Background: Nivolumab was the first anti-programmed cell death 1 drug approved in Argentina for non-small-cell lung cancer treatment in the second-line setting.

Materials And Methods: The present study was a multicenter, observational, retrospective study of patients with progression to stage IV NSCLC during platinum-based chemotherapy who had received nivolumab monotherapy in a drug-expanded access program in Argentina.

Results: The data from 109 patients were assessed retrospectively for safety and clinical outcomes.

Alfuzosin and Its Effect on Ejaculatory Dysfunction: A Systematic Review.

Studies have demonstrated that alfuzosin not only improves lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) but also appears to preserve ejaculatory dysfunction (EjD). The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of alfuzosin on ejaculatory function using the 'Male Sexual Health Questionnaire (MSHQ)-EjD Short Form' - a validated, abridged-version of the 25-item MSHQ specifically assessing EjD. A systematic search of MEDLINE, PubMed, Scopus, Embase, and grey literature was performed in January 2017 to identify relevant cohort studies.

Controlled Release of Metformin Hydrochloride from Core-Shell Nanofibers with Fish Sarcoplasmic Protein.

: A coaxial electrospinning technique was used to produce core/shell nanofibers of a polylactic acid (PLA) as a shell and a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) containing metformin hydrochloride (MH) as a core. : Fish sarcoplasmic protein (FSP) was extracted from fresh bonito and incorporated into nanofiber at various concentrations to investigate the influence on properties of the coaxial nanofibers. The morphology, chemical structure and thermal properties of the nanofibers were studied.

On the Accuracy and Scalability of Probabilistic Data Linkage Over the Brazilian 114 Million Cohort.

Data linkage refers to the process of identifying and linking records that refer to the same entity across multiple heterogeneous data sources. This method has been widely utilized across scientific domains, including public health where records from clinical, administrative, and other surveillance databases are aggregated and used for research, decision making, and assessment of public policies. When a common set of unique identifiers does not exist across sources, probabilistic linkage approaches are used to link records using a combination of attributes.
