Inflammation plays an essential role in the phases of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) as the joints secrete a range of molecules that modulate the inflammatory process. While therapies based on physical properties have shown effectiveness in a range of animal experimental models, the understanding of their biological mechanisms remains unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate the immunomodulatory effects of a 0.

Article Synopsis
  • Advances in terahertz (THz) technology have sparked interest in how THz radiation affects the immune system, but much remains unknown.
  • This study found that exposure to 3 THz-FEL radiation in mice significantly reduced contact hypersensitivity reactions, improving skin responses and immune cell balance.
  • THz irradiation caused cellular stress, increased certain interleukins (IL-4 and IL-10), altered immune cell behavior, and changed the skin lipid profile, suggesting therapeutic potential for skin allergies.

With the advancement of terahertz technology, unveiling the mysteries of terahertz has had a profound impact on the field of biomedicine. However, the lack of systematic comparisons for gene expression signatures may diminish the effectiveness and efficiency of identifying common mechanisms underlying terahertz effects across diverse research findings. We performed a comprehensive review and meta-analysis to compile patterns of gene expression profiles associated with THz radiation.

β-Hydroxybutyrate (BHB) has been reported to exert neuroprotective functions and is considered a promising treatment for neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's and Alzheimer's. Numerous studies have revealed BHB's multifaceted roles, including anti-senescence, anti-oxidative, and anti-inflammatory activities. However, the underlying mechanisms warrant further investigation.

The primary emphasis of photoimmunology is the impact of nonionizing radiation on the immune system. With the development of terahertz (THz) and sub-terahertz (sub-THz) technology, the biological effects of this emerging nonionizing radiation, particularly its influence on immune function, remain insufficiently explored but are progressively attracting attention. Here, we demonstrated that 0.

The biosafety of terahertz (THz) waves has emerged as a new area of concern with the gradual application of terahertz radiation. Even though many studies have been conducted to investigate the influence of THz radiation on living organisms, the biological effects of terahertz waves have not yet been fully revealed. In this study, () was used to evaluate the biological consequences of whole-body exposure to 0.

Psoriasis is one of several chronic inflammatory skin diseases with a high rate of recurrence, and its pathogenesis remains unclear. Nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN), as an important precursor of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+), has been reported to be a promising agent in treating various diseases, its positive effects including those induced via its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. For this reason, we have aimed to explore the possible role of NMN in the treatment of psoriasis.

Understanding the vibrational information encoded within the terahertz (THz) spectrum of biomolecules is critical for guiding the exploration of its functional responses to specific THz radiation wavelengths. This study investigated several important phospholipid components of biological membranes-distearoyl phosphatidylethanolamine (DSPE), dipalmitoyl phosphatidylcholine (DPPC), sphingosine phosphorylcholine (SPH), and lecithin bilayer-using THz time-domain spectroscopy. We observed similar spectral patterns for DPPC, SPH, and the lecithin bilayer, all of which contain the choline group as the hydrophilic head.

Loess features metastable microstructure and is deemed susceptible to chemical contaminant permeation. However, studies on the loess permeability evolution under water and chemical environments are remarkably limited. In this study, the response of the loess to the water and sodium sulfate seepages was analyzed using the temporal relationship of cations concentration, X-ray diffraction and fluorescence (XRD and XRF), mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP), and scanning electron microscope (SEM) tests.

The effects and mechanisms of ultrashort and intense pulsed electric fields on biological cells remain some unknown. Especially for picosecond pulsed electric fields (psPEF) with a high pulse repetition rate, electroporation or nanoporation effects could be induced on cell membranes and intracellular organelle membranes. In this work, the design, implementation, and experimental validation of a wideband psPEF exposure system (WPES) is reported, comprising picosecond pulser and wideband biochip, for the in vitro exposure of suspended cells to high-intensity psPEF.

Neurological evidence suggests that beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHBA) has positive effects on the central nervous system. Previous studies have explored the molecular mechanisms by which BHBA affects different brain functions, but the effects of BHBA on epigenetic modifications remain elusive. Here, we showed that BHBA enhanced brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) expression by increasing H3K4me3 and decreasing H2AK119ub occupancy at the promoters I, II, IV, and VI in hippocampal neurons.

The biosafety of ultra-wideband (UWB) pulses, which are characterized by simultaneously high power and a high bandwidth ratio, has gained increasing attention. Although there is substantial prior literature on the biological effects of UWB pulses on both cells and animals, an explicit, unequivocal and definite pattern of the corresponding biological responses remains elusive, and the systemic secondary consequences are also still not fully understood. In this study, we found that exposing mice to UWB pulses resulted in the alteration of several biochemical blood parameters, which further prompted us to investigate changes in the liver and kidneys of mice exposed to UWB pulses with different field intensities and different durations.

As a biopolyester with excellent properties, the potential biomedical applications of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate--3-hydroxyhexanoate) (PHBHHx) have gained extensive attention. In this research, PHBHHx was fabricated into nanoparticles (NPs) to encapsulate NVP-BEZ235 (BEZ), an efficient kinase inhibitor/antitumor agent, for tumor targeting therapy. The resulting BEZ-NPs displayed a regularly spherical form with an appropriate diameter at 76.

The intense and prolonged inflammatory response after ischemic stroke significantly contributes to the secondary neural injury. PI3Kγ, which is involved in the regulation of vascular permeability, chemotactic leukocyte migration and microglia activation, is a key target for intervention in the inflammatory response. In this study, we identified the protective effect of the PI3Kγ inhibitor AS605240 against stroke-related injury in the mouse model of transient intraluminal middle cerebral artery occlusion (tMCAO).

Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate--3-hydroxyhexanoate) (PHBHHx) is an intracellular biopolyester synthesized by various bacteria. Polyhydroxyalkanoate granule-binding protein (PhaP), a natural biomacromolecule symbiotic with PHBHHx, can be steadily adsorbed into the PHBHHx matrix through hydrophobic interactions. In this study, PHBHHx nanoparticles (NPs) and iRGD peptide fused PhaP (iRGD-PhaP) were used in conjunction to build a specific drug delivery system for targeted accumulation and tissue penetration in prostate tumors.

Activation of inflammasome leads to the formation of an inflammatory microenvironment which plays an important role in the process of cancer development. Beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) is a ketone body that has recently been reported to exert anti-inflammatory effects via inhibition of NOD-like receptor pyrin domain-containing 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome. Here, we investigated the potential influence of BHB on the in vitro migration of C6 glioma cells and the activation of NLRP3 inflammasome.

Neurobiological evidence suggests that the ketone metabolite β-hydroxybutyrate (BHBA) exerts many neuroprotective functions for the brain. The previous study revealed that BHBA could promote the expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) at glucose inadequate condition. Here we demonstrated that BHBA administration induced the expression of BDNF in the hippocampus of mice fed with normal diet.
