Three new cycloartane bisdesmosides, two of which are based on a new genin, were isolated from the above-ground parts of Thalictrum minus. Thalicosides A1-A3 (1-3) were characterized as 3-O-beta-D-galactopyranosyl-29-O-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-3beta,16beta++ +, 29-trihydroxy-22(S),25-epoxycycloartane (1); 3-O-alpha-L-arabinopyranosyl-29-O-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-3beta,1 6beta, 29,22(S)-tetrahydroxycycloart-24-ene (2); and 3-O-alpha-L-arabinopyranosyl-29-O-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-3beta,1 6beta, 29-trihydroxy-22(S),25-epoxycycloartane (3), respectively. The structural assignments of these new compounds were based on interpretation of spectroscopic data.

[Soluble P-selectin - a marker of platelet activation and vessel wall injury: increase of soluble P-selectin in plasma of patients with myocardial infarction, massive atherosclerosis and primary pulmonary hypertension].

Aim: A comparative analysis of the content of the soluble form of cell adhesion protein P-selectin in the blood plasma of patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI), massive atherosclerosis (MA) and primary pulmonary hypertension (PPH), investigation of the relationship between plasma content of P-selectin and known markers of platelets and endothelial cells activation, preliminary assessment of the prognostic value of P-selectin determination.

Materials And Methods: This study included 16 patients with AMI, 20 patients with MA, 21 patients with PPH and 18 healthy donors. The follow-up was 1-5 years.

[Effect of age and radiation exposure on the frequency of translocations and dicentrics detected by FISH method in human lymphocytes].

The frequencies of translocations and dicentrics detected by "chromosome painting" in lymphocytes were estimated in 115 healthy donors and in 273 people exposed to uncontrolled irradiation at low doses 1-4 years ago. We have studied the production of B hadrons in 1.8-TeV pp[over ¯] collisions. We present measurements of the fragmentation fractions, f_{u}, f_{d}, f_{s}, and f_{baryon}, of produced b quarks that yield B^{+}, B^{0}, B_{s}^{0}, and Λ[over ¯]_{b}^{0} hadrons.

Electrometrical study of electron transfer from the terminal FA/FB iron-sulfur clusters to external acceptors in photosystem I.

An electrometrical technique was used to investigate electron transfer between the terminal iron-sulfur centers F(A)/F(B) and external electron acceptors in photosystem I (PS I) complexes from the cyanobacterium Synechococcus sp. PCC 6301 and from spinach. The increase of the relative contribution of the slow components of the membrane potential decay kinetics in the presence of both native (ferredoxin, flavodoxin) and artificial (methyl viologen) electron acceptors indicate the effective interaction between the terminal 14Fe-4S] cluster and acceptors.

Production of soluble P-selectin by platelets and endothelial cells.

The distribution of a soluble form of a cell adhesion molecule, P-selectin, in human platelets and cultivated endothelial cells has been studied by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The concentration of soluble P-selectin in the blood plasma of healthy donors and patients with abnormal platelet count has also been determined. P-selectin was measured in the Triton X-100 lysate of platelets and endothelial cells (total P-selectin), in the 100,000g supernatant obtained after sedimentation of the membrane fraction from the homogenate of sonicated platelets and endothelial cells (intracellular soluble P-selectin), in the supernatant of activated and nonactivated platelets, and in the culture medium of endothelial cells.

The content of 137Cs in the whole human body and certain internal organs has been determined using gamma-spectrometry method for inhabitants of Vitebsk Region. The average activity of 137Cs in the whole human body was obtained to be 0.038 mkCu.

Controlled Arrangement of Supramolecular Metal Coordination Arrays on Surfaces.

Metallo-supramolecular systems have been adsorbed in a controlled way onto graphite surfaces and visualized with molecular resolution for the first time. A parallel or orthogonal arrangement of the metal coordination arrays is evident depending on the specific ligands (see picture). Furthermore, simple nanomanipulations were performed by extracting single grids from the layer.

Photoelectric responses of oxygen-evolving complexes of photosystem II.

The generation of a transmembrane electric potential difference induced by a series of laser flashes was studied by the direct electrometrical method in proteoliposomes containing oxygen-evolving particles of photosystem II. In addition to the fast stage of generation of the membrane potential, which is due to electron transfer from the redox active tyrosine residue Tyr-161 (YZ) to the primary quinone acceptor QA, electrogenic stages corresponding to the S1 --> S2 (tau = 30 &mgr;sec), S2 --> S3 (tau = 240 &mgr;sec), and S3 --> S4 --> S0 (tau = 6.2 msec) transitions of the oxygen-evolving complex (OEC) were observed.

Antimalarial effects in mice of orally administered peptidyl cysteine protease inhibitors.

The Plasmodium falciparum cysteine protease falcipain is required for the degradation of hemoglobin by erythrocytic malaria parasites. In prior studies, peptidyl inhibitors of falcipain blocked hemoglobin degradation and development by cultured parasites and one of these compounds, when administered parenterally, cured Plasmodium vinckei-infected mice. We now report an evaluation of orally administered peptidyl inhibitors of falcipain in a mouse malaria model.

Moving Waves of Bacterial Populations and Total Organic Carbon along Roots of Wheat.

> Abstract To determine if spatial variation in soluble carbon sources along the root coincides with different trophic groups of bacteria, copiotrophic and oligotrophic bacteria were enumerated from bulk soil and rhizosphere samples at 2 cm intervals along wheat roots 2, 3, and 4 weeks after planting. There was a moderate rhizosphere effect in one experiment with soil rich in fresh plant debris, and a very pronounced rhizosphere effect in the second experiment with soil low in organic matter. We obtained wavelike patterns of both trophic groups of bacteria as well as water-soluble total organic carbon (TOC) along the whole root length (60 or 90 cm).

Antimalarial synergy of cysteine and aspartic protease inhibitors.

It has been proposed that the Plasmodium falciparum cysteine protease falcipain and aspartic proteases plasmepsin I and plasmepsin II act cooperatively to hydrolyze hemoglobin as a source of amino acids for erythrocytic parasites. Inhibitors of each of these proteases have potent antimalarial effects. We have now evaluated the antimalarial effects of combinations of cysteine and aspartic protease inhibitors.

[Sulfated polysaccharides as inhibitors of receptor activity of P-selectin and P-selectin-dependent inflammation].

The inhibitory effects of sulfated polysaccharides-fucoidan and heparin on P-selectin-ligand interaction in vitro and on the ability of fucoidan to inhibit the leukocyte extravasation in rat peritonitis were studied. The lectin activity of P-selectin in vitro was based on its ability to bind lectin-labeled synthetic ligand, Sialyl-Lea/x, conjugated with polyacrylamide (PAA). Fucoidan and heparin inhibited binding of labeled ligand to both purified P-selectin and the activated platelets expressing P-selectin on their surface.

The elucidation of the structure of thalicoside F, A. minor oleanane glycoside from Thalictrum minus L.

A new triterpenoid saponin, thalicoside F was isolated from the above-ground part of Thalictrum minus L. (Ranunculaceae family) collected in Eastern Siberia (Russia). The structure of thalicoside F was elucidated by a combination of 1D- and 2D-NMR spectroscopy and mass spectroscopy, and was determined to be C47H74O17{3-beta-O-[alpha-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1-->2)-beta-D- glucopyranosyl-(1-->4)-alpha-L-arabinopyranosyl]-11 alpha, 12 alpha-epoxyoleanane-28,13 beta-olide}.

The kinetics of reduction of the photo-oxidized primary electron donor P700+ by redox dyes N,N,N',N'-tetramethyl-p-phenylendiamine, 2,6-dichlorophenol-indophenol and phenazine methosulfate was studied in proteoliposomes containing Photosystem I complexes from cyanobacteria Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 using direct electrometrical technique. In the presence of high concentrations of redox dyes, the fast generation of a membrane potential related to electron transfer between P700 and the terminal iron-sulfur clusters F(A)/F(B) was followed by a new electrogenic phase in the millisecond time domain, which contributes approximately 20% to the overall photoelectric response.
