The dose-response of unstable chromosome exchanges (UCE) in lymphocytes of 4 cancer patients undergone whole-body fractionated gamma-rays exposure (at the daily dose of 0.115 Gy up to the total dose 1.15 Gy) was compared with corresponding dose-response for lymphocytes of the same patients, irradiated in vitro at the same dose range.

Isolation and partial characterization of bacterial strains on low organic carbon medium from soils fertilized with different organic amendments.

A total of 720 bacterial strains were isolated from soils with four different organic amendment regimes on a low organic carbon (low-C) agar medium (10 µg C ml(-1)) traditionally used for isolation of oligotrophs. Organic amendments in combination with field history resulted in differences in dissolved organic carbon contents in these soils. There were negative correlations between total and dissolved organic carbon content and the number of isolates on low-C agar medium, whereas these correlations were absent for bacterial strains isolated from the same soil on high-C agar medium (1,000 µg C ml(-1)).

Transfer of enteric pathogens to successive habitats as part of microbial cycles.

We report a measurement of the lifetime of the Lambda(b)(0) baryon in decays to the Lambda(c)(+)pi(-) final state in a sample corresponding to 1.1 fb(-1) collected in pp collisions at square root of s = 1.96 TeV by the CDF II detector at the Tevatron collider.

Measurement of the WW + WZ production cross section using the lepton + jets final state at CDF II.

We report two complementary measurements of the WW + WZ cross section in the final state consisting of an electron or muon, missing transverse energy, and jets, performed using pp collision data at square root of s = 1.96 TeV collected by the CDF II detector. The first method uses the dijet invariant mass distribution while the second more sensitive method uses matrix-element calculations.

We report on a search for the standard-model Higgs boson in pp collisions at square root(s) = 1.96 TeV using an integrated luminosity of 2.0 fb(-1).

First observation of B(s)(0) --> D(s)(+/-)K(-/+) and measurement of the ratio of branching fractions B(B(s)(0) --> D(s)(+/-)K(-/+)/B(B(s)(0) --> D(s)(+)pi(-)).

Femtosecond primary charge separation in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 photosystem I.

The ultrafast (<100 fs) conversion of delocalized exciton into charge-separated state between the primary donor P700 (bleaching at 705 nm) and the primary acceptor A0 (bleaching at 690 nm) in photosystem I (PS I) complexes from Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 was observed. The data were obtained by application of pump-probe technique with 20-fs low-energy pump pulses centered at 720 nm.

The effect of the native bacterial community structure on the predictability of E. coli O157:H7 survival in manure-amended soil.

Aims: The survival capability of pathogens like Escherichia coli O157:H7 in manure-amended soil is considered to be an important factor for the likelihood of crop contamination. The aim of this study was to reveal the effects of the diversity and composition of soil bacterial community structure on the survival time (ttd) and stability (irregularity, defined as the intensity of irregular dynamic changes in a population over time) of an introduced E. coli O157:H7 gfp-strain were investigated for 36 different soils by means of bacterial PCR-DGGE fingerprints.

[Effect of additional administration of iron ions on the efficacy of radiotherapy of glioma-bearing animals].

Our analysis failed to establish any antitumor effect of treatment of rats with transplantable glioma-35 with iron-containing mineral drinking water (ICMW). The latter treatment combined with irradiation (15 Gy) was followed by enhanced genotoxic effect in white blood cells. Post-irradiation administration of ICMW did not influence glioma growth significantly as compared with radiation alone.

Precision measurement of the X(3872) mass in J/psi pi(+) pi(-) decays.

We present an analysis of the mass of the X(3872) reconstructed via its decay to J/psi pi(+)pi(-) using 2.4 fb(-1) of integrated luminosity from pp collisions at square root(s)=1.96 TeV, collected with the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron.

[Therapeutic effect of mineral water of the Belokurikha spa resort on the level of antinuclear antibodies and chromosomal aberrations in synovial cells of patients with osteoarthrosis].

The objective of this study was chromosomal analysis and measurement of anti-nuclear antibody level in synovial cells of 28 patients aged between 35 and 50 years with knee joint osteoarthrosis before and after radon therapy at an equivalent doe of 280 mSv per treatment course. It was shown that the presence of osteoarthrosis was associated with a rise in the number of synoviocytes characterized by cytogenetic defects in the form of various chromosomal aberrations the frequency of which positively correlated with the number of anti-nuclear antibodies. Radon therapy brought about a decreases in the titers of antinuclear antibodies in synovial cells and the number of chromosomal aberrations in their nuclear apparatus.

A superconducting NbN detector for neutral nanoparticles.

We present a proof-of-principle study of superconducting single photon detectors (SSPD) for the detection of individual neutral molecules/nanoparticles at low energies. The new detector is applied to characterize a laser desorption source for biomolecules and allows retrieval of the arrival time distribution of a pulsed molecular beam containing the amino acid tryptophan, the polypeptide gramicidin as well as insulin, myoglobin and hemoglobin. We discuss the experimental evidence that the detector is actually sensitive to isolated neutral particles.

We report the observation of single top-quark production using 3.2 fb(-1) of pp[over ] collision data with sqrt[s]=1.96 TeV collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab.
