Background: By acting as an environmental sensor, the ligand-induced transcription factor aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) regulates acute innate and adaptive immune responses against pathogens. Here, we analyzed the function of AhR in a model for chronic systemic infection with attenuated Salmonella Typhimurium (STM).

Methods: WT and AhR-deficient mice were infected with the attenuated STM strain TAS2010 and analyzed for bacterial burden, host defense functions and inflammatory stress erythropoiesis.

Glycolipids are found mainly in photosynthetic organisms (plants, algae, and cyanobacteria), Gram-positive bacteria, and a few other bacterial phyla. They serve as membrane lipids and play a role under phosphate deprivation as surrogates for phospholipids. Mesorhizobium loti accumulates different di- and triglycosyl diacylglycerols, synthesized by the processive glycosyltransferase Pgt-Ml, and two so far unknown glycolipids, which were identified in this study by mass spectrometry (MS) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy as O-methyl-digalactosyl diacylglycerol (Me-DGD) and glucuronosyl diacylglycerol (GlcAD).

Glycolipids are mainly found in phototrophic organisms (like plants and cyanobacteria), in Gram-positive bacteria, and a few other bacterial phyla. Besides the function as bulk membrane lipids, they often play a role under phosphate deprivation as surrogates for phospholipids. The Gram-negative Agrobacterium tumefaciens accumulates four different glycolipids under phosphate deficiency, including digalactosyl diacylglycerol and glucosylgalactosyl diacylglycerol synthesized by a processive glycosyltransferase.

The influence of activation of lipid peroxidation (LP) on morphofunctional organization of extraembryonic compounds and liver on different stages of rat's ontogenesis was studied. It is found that LP-activation (paraquat injection) in late pregnancy leads to extensive vacuolization of trophoblastic and yolk sac cells. In the embryonic liver, the number of hemopoietic cells decreases.

Antagonistic activity of 264 strains (6 species) of aerobic bacilli as well as 45 strains (3 species) of bacteria from genera Chromobacterium and Pseudomonas has been studied. They were isolated from the fodder at the farms of Ukraine five regions in 1986-1992 in respect to 128 strains (17 species) of genera Escherichia, Proteus, Salmonella, Shigella and Pasteurella, isolated by the authors from feces of calf with symptoms of diarrhea. High antagonistic activity of Bacillus polymyxa 168 (zone of growth inhibition of test cultures of 10-20 mm) in respect of diarrhea agents was established.

The effects of benzpyrene (BP) were studied in 32 male Wistar rats. Treatment of intact mature animals with benzpyrene causes transformations of hepatocytes. Antenatal treatment with BP initiates a complex of compensatory-adaptational reactions in the liver of progeny and the effect retains at the postnatal period.

The density of adrenergic innervation and relative content of catecholamines were investigated in rat lymphoid organs under different type of benzpyrene treatment. It was found that both ante- and postnatal influence of toxicant leads to a decrease of neurotransmitter providing of the thymus, spleen, mesenterial, iliac and popliteal lymph nodes. On the contrary, when mixed ante- and postnatal benzpyrene influence has place, the adrenergic innervation density and relative content of catecholamines are increased.

Investigations of the state of processes of lipid peroxidation (PLP) and the antioxidant system (AOS) of the organism performed in 267 elderly and senile patients have shown destabilization of the system "PLP-AOS". The correction of processes of lipid peroxidation with antioxidants improved the course of the postoperative period, decreased the amount of complications and lethality. It allowed a conclusion of the necessity to use antioxidants in the complex treatment of such patients.

Paraquat action on glutathione reductase activity and intratissue distribution in the liver of intact rats and also in the animals antenatally treated with the given herbicide was studied by some biochemical and histochemical methods. It has been ascertained that paraquat injection into intact animals promotes the increase in the intracellular enzyme level, development of glutathione reductase staining of hepatocyte nuclei, diffuse distribution of the staining along the lobe. In rats antenatally treated with paraquat acute priming does not induce glutathione reductase.

The paper is concerned with the results of combined investigation of 157 women suffering from genital endometriosis, operated on for this disease. The involvement of the lower parts of the ureters in a pathological process was detected in 48 patients before operation and in 6 patients at operation. Comparison of x-ray and operative findings with histology specimens made it possible to define endogenous and exogenous forms of ureteral endometriosis and three variants of an x-ray picture in this pathology (the absence of abnormal changes of the urinary tract, hydroureter is over the narrowed part of the ureter, hydroureteronephrosis).

Administration of benzpirene to the mother is accompanied with activation of B-and decrease in T-links of immune activity both in the mother and offspring. The lymphoid organs in the animals, not subjected antenatally to benziprene action, but given the substance after birth, undergo destabilization and are not ready to administration of this polycyclic hydrocarbonic compound. This produces their hypoplasia.
