Background: Detection and containment of hospital outbreaks currently depend on variable and personnel-intensive surveillance methods. Whether automated statistical surveillance for outbreaks of health care-associated pathogens allows earlier containment efforts that would reduce the size of outbreaks is unknown.
Methods: We conducted a cluster-randomized trial in 82 community hospitals within a larger health care system.
Importance: Pneumonia is the most common infection requiring hospitalization and is a major reason for overuse of extended-spectrum antibiotics. Despite low risk of multidrug-resistant organism (MDRO) infection, clinical uncertainty often drives initial antibiotic selection. Strategies to limit empiric antibiotic overuse for patients with pneumonia are needed.

Clinicians overuse extended-spectrum antibiotics although most patients are at low risk for MDRO infection. Safe strategies to limit overuse of empiric antibiotics are needed.

Antibiotic resistance to mupirocin has raised questions about whether an antiseptic could be advantageous for ICU decolonization.
Objective: To compare the effectiveness of iodophor vs mupirocin for universal ICU nasal decolonization in combination with CHG bathing.
Objectives: Syndromic surveillance can help identify the onset, location, affected populations, and trends in infectious diseases quickly and efficiently. We developed an electronic medical record-based surveillance algorithm for COVID-19-like illness (CLI) and assessed its performance in 5 Massachusetts medical practice groups compared with statewide counts of confirmed cases.
Materials And Methods: Using data from February 2020 through November 2022, the CLI algorithm was implemented in sites that provide ambulatory and inpatient care for about 25% of the state.
In a survey of infection prevention programs, leaders reported frequent clinical and infection prevention practice modifications to avoid coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) exposure that exceeded national guidance. Future pandemic responses should emphasize balanced approaches to precautions, prioritize educational campaigns to manage safety concerns, and generate an evidence-base that can guide appropriate infection prevention practices.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFApoptosis (programmed cell death) occurs during normal development of anurans in organs such as gills, gut, and tail. For example, apoptotic cells have been reported in the luminal epithelium along the length of the digestive tract of both larvae and frogs; however, timing of the peak number of such cells varies in different species. The purpose of the present study was to ascertain whether apoptosis also varies by species during metamorphic restructuring of the skin (as larval epithelium is replaced by adult epidermis).
