Role of Expression of Inflammatory Mediators in Primary and Recurrent Lumbar Disc Herniation.

Objective: To assess role of some inflammatory mediators in patients with primary and recurrent lumbar disc herniation. Expression of IL-6, transforming growth factor (TGF)-1, insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-1, and Bcl-2-associated X protein (BAX) have been shown to be more intense in the primary group than the recurrent goup, but this mediators may be important aspects prognostic.

Methods: 19 patients underwent primary and revision operations between June 1, 2009 and June 1, 2014, and they were included in this study.

Major Ozonated Autohemotherapy Preconditioning Ameliorates Kidney Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury.

Medical ozone has therapeutic properties as an antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, modulator of antioxidant defense system. Major ozonated autohemotherapy (MOA) is a new therapeutic approach that is widely used in the treatment of many diseases. The objective of the present study was to determine whether preischemic application of MOA would attenuate renal ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) in rabbits.

Importance of IL-6, MMP-1, IGF-1, and BAX Levels in Lumbar Herniated Disks and Posterior Longitudinal Ligament in Patients with Sciatic Pain.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate prognostic importance of interleukin-6 (IL-6), matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-1, insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-1, and Bcl-2-associated X protein (BAX) levels in biopsy specimens taken from the intervertebral disk specimens and the posterior longitudinal ligaments of patients with sciatic pain.

Methods: The specimens of the intervertebral disk and the posterior longitudinal ligament were obtained from 52 patients undergoing herniectomy and diskectomy at the Neurosurgery Department of the Abant Izzet Baysal University Izzet Baysal Training and Research Hospital between April 2012 and February 2014. The immunohistochemical expressions of IL-6, MMP-1, IGF-1, and BAX were evaluated in three categories: mild, moderate, and intense.

The role of gel application in decreasing pain during speculum examination and its effects on papanicolaou smear results.

Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the effects of water-based gel application in reducing pain or discomfort associated with speculum examination, and compared the presence of unsatisfactory Papanicolaou smear results between gel-applied and control groups.

Methods: In this prospective randomized controlled study, a total of 1,580 patients were analyzed. The subjects were randomized to a gel group and a control group.

Abnormal cervical cytology risk factors in the Western Black Sea Region and the importance of health insurance.

Objective: To evaluate the prevalence of abnormal cervical cytological findings in the Western Black Sea Region and investigate an association between socio-demographic risk factors and the presence of cytological abnormalities.

Material And Method: The reports of 11,539 cervical smears diagnosed according to Bethesda System 2001 version in the Pathology Department between January 2011 and December 2012 were reviewed retrospectively from the hospital records and cytopathology reports. Repeated smear results, unsatisfactory smear results, patients with known gynecologic malignancy history, smear results of patients with hysterectomy and smear results of patients whose socio-demographic information could not be obtained were excluded from the evaluation.

Multifocal giant cell tumor of the tendon sheath occuring at different localizations of the same tendon of a finger: a case report and review of the literature.

The giant cell tumor of the tendon sheath is regarded as one of the most common neoplasms of the hand. This tumor usually manifests itself as a localized, solitary, painless and palpable subcutaneous nodule on the palmar aspect of a digit. A multifocal origin of the tumor has rarely been reported in the literature before.

Evaluation of the immunohistochemical stain patterns of survivin, Bak and Bag-1 in colorectal cancers and comparison with polyps situated in the colon.

Background/aims: Colorectal cancer is one of the most common cancers worldwide. The adenoma-carcinoma sequence in colorectal cancer has been documented approximately; however, several series of molecular mechanisms still require elucidation.

Methodology: Fifteen colonoscopic biopsy and 25 colectomy colorectal cancer samples, 12 hyperplastic colon polyps, and 18 tubular and 19 villous adenoma cases were studied.

Mitomycin C, 5-fluorouracil, and cyclosporin A prevent epidural fibrosis in an experimental laminectomy model.

This study examined the preventive effects of the local application of mitomycin C (MMC), 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), and cyclosporine A (CsA) in minimizing spinal epidural fibrosis in a rat laminectomy model. Thirty-two 2-year-old male Wistar albino rats, each weighing 400 +/- 50 g, were divided into four equal groups: sham, MMC, 5-FU, and CsA. Each rat underwent laminectomy at the L5-L6 lumbar level.

Cholesterol granuloma of the maxillary sinus.

Cholesterol granuloma is usually associated with middle ear disease and is very rare in the paranasal sinuses. We report a case of cholesterol granuloma originating in the maxillary sinus of a 36-year-old female. Endoscopic sinus surgery was performed on the left maxillary, sinus, and the cholesterol granuloma was successfully removed by the middle meatal antrostomy.

Gastric pseudolipomatosis, usual or unusual? Re-evaluation of 909 endoscopic gastric biopsies.

Microvesicular pneumatosis intestinalis, also called "pseudolipomatosis" for resembling fatty infiltration, is characterized by the presence of small gas voids in the gastrointestinal wall, especially in mucosa. These voids are not lined with epithelia. There are few reported cases about colon, duodenum and skin.

Papillary carcinoma of the thyroglossal duct cyst in childhood.

Thyroglossal duct carcinoma is a rare malignancy that is usually diagnosed postoperatively. Approximately 150 cases have been reported in the literature. Eighty-five percent of these were papillary carcinomas.
