Identifying and treating catatonia in children with neurodevelopmental disorders: A case series.

Catatonia is a neuropsychiatric syndrome that is an increasingly recognized cause of acute behavioural changes in children and adolescents with neurodevelopmental disorders (NDD). Literature suggests that catatonia can present differently in this population and can be missed due to diagnostic overshadowing. Catatonia is a treatable condition, and management strategies in children with NDD include benzodiazepines and electroconvulsive therapy (ECT).

Drug decriminalization: The importance of policy change for the health and wellbeing of children and youth in Canada.

The criminalization of drug use and possession has demonstrable harms on the health of children and youth, with disproportionate effects on Black people, Indigenous people, people from other racially oppressed communities, and people living in poverty. Drug decriminalization, by separating personal possession and use of drugs from the criminal justice system, allows for a health-based approach to drug policy. Paediatricians are well-positioned to advocate for policies within a decriminalization framework to prioritize the physical and mental health of children and youth.

Introduction: The Canadian population has poor and inequitable access to psychiatric care despite a steady per-capita supply of psychiatrists in most provinces. There is some quantitative evidence that practice style and characteristics vary substantially among psychiatrists. However, how this compares across jurisdictions and implications for workforce planning require further study.

Resolution of bipolar II and panic disorders following subarachnoid hemorrhage.

Cerebral infarction producing psychiatric disorders such as depression and mania is a recognized phenomenon. However, resolution of affective disorders following stroke has not been previously reported. We describe the case of a 53-year-old woman with a 25-year history of treatment-resistant bipolar II and panic disorders.
