Microbial rhodopsins (MRs) are a diverse and abundant family of photoactive membrane proteins that serve as model systems for biophysical techniques. Optogenetics utilizes genetic engineering to insert specialized proteins into specific neurons or brain regions, allowing for manipulation of their activity through light and enabling the mapping and control of specific brain areas in living organisms. The obstacle of optogenetics lies in the fact that light has a limited ability to penetrate biological tissues, particularly blue light in the visible spectrum.

Monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) hold promise in treating Parkinson's disease (PD), although poor delivery to the brain hinders their therapeutic application. In the current study, it is demonstrated that brain-targeted liposomes (BTL) enhance the delivery of mAbs across the blood-brain-barrier (BBB) and into neurons, thereby allowing the intracellular and extracellular treatment of the PD brain. BTL are decorated with transferrin to improve brain targeting through overexpressed transferrin-receptors on the BBB during PD.

In this study, we examine the single-scattering properties of aggregates of nano-sized spherical scattering centers (spherules) of different sizes and refractive indices, with an emphasis on contrasting the single-scattering properties of ordered and disordered aggregates, holding all other parameters constant. The ordered aggregates are constructed by arranging the spherules in a simple cubic configuration, while the disordered aggregates are constructed using an ideal amorphous solid algorithm. The single-scattering properties of both kinds of aggregates are computed using the superposition -matrix method.

Previous studies have shown that the Lorentz-Lorenz relationship, or molar refractivity/specific refractivity effective medium approximation, enables a reasonable prediction of the refractive index of amorphous water ice, given the refractive index of crystalline water ice. In the current study, we show that the Bruggeman effective medium approximation provides an even closer match to measurements of the refractive index of several amorphous materials, given the refractive index of their crystalline phase. We show that the Bruggeman effective medium approximation provides a good match to measurements of the refractive index of amorphous ice as well.

To identify the mechanisms relevant for the therapeutic effect of glatiramer acetate (GA), we studied T- and B- regulatory cells as well as GM-CSF expression in mice recovered from experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE). Selective depletion of Tregs reduced but did not eliminate the ability of GA to ameliorate EAE, indicating a role for additional immune-subsets. The prevalence of Bregs in the periphery and the CNS of EAE-mice increased following GA-treatment.

Background: Adipose-derived stem cell (ASC) expansion under atmospheric oxygen levels (21%) was previously shown to cause increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation and genetic instability compared to cells cultured under physiological oxygen levels (2-8%). The severe motor impairment in the MS animal model experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) obstructs the assessment of cognitive functions. To elucidate mechanisms contributing to cortical pathology in multiple sclerosis (MS), we investigated neurovascular aberrations, in particular the association of astrocytes with cortical neurons and blood vessels, in mice induced with experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE). Blood-brain barrier (BBB) dysfunction was evident by leakage of the tracer sodium fluorescein, along with reduced expression of claudin-5 by endothelial cells and desmin by pericytes. Immunohistological and ultrastructural analyses revealed detachment of the astroglial cell bodies from the blood vessels and loss of their connections with both the blood vessels and the neuronal synapses.

Study Aim: To examine the incidence of sexual harassment of women staff by male hospital patients, and how experiencing it differs between doctors, nurses and nurse aides.

Methods: 434 women staff in three large Israeli hospitals completed an anonymous self-administered questionnaire on (a) the frequency of sexual harassment by patients, (b) the emotional effect of a described instance of harassment, (c) what action respondents would take if confronted by the same incident.

Results: Sexual harassment by male patients is common, ranges from mild innuendo to threats of rape, and creates great emotional distress.
