Article Synopsis
  • Peutz-Jeghers syndrome (PJS) is a rare genetic disorder linked to heightened cancer risk, primarily due to mutations in the STK11 gene, with a study focusing on its manifestations and genetic profiles among 20 patients across 14 families.
  • The research found that typical symptoms began around 18.9 years of age, with common issues including abdominal pain and specific polyps; 85% of patients had mucocutaneous lesions, and dysplastic polyps were present in some cases, leading to a few malignancies.
  • The study successfully identified multiple pathogenic mutations, including 3 novel variants, and achieved high diagnostic rates with genetic testing; notable findings indicate that patients without mutations tend to show later symptom

Background: Gastrointestinal system disorders are known to be prevalent among children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Some ASD-associated comorbidities are abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea, gastroesophageal reflux, sleep disturbances, epilepsy, and psychiatric problems. Nonetheless, there is still limited information about the presence of functional GI disorders (FGIDs) among children with ASD, especially in Türkiye.

Objectives: Large cell calcifying Sertoli cell tumours (LCCSCTs) are one of the infrequent causes of prepubertal gynaecomastia. Most of these tumours are in the content of Peutz-Jeghers syndrome (PJS) or other familial syndromes (Carney complex).

Case Presentation: Here, we report a long-term follow-up of an 8.

Background/aim: Peritoneal dialysis (PD) is generally considered the practical dialysis modality for neonates in the treatment of acute kidney injury (AKI) and metabolic disturbances. The aim of this study was to evaluate the indications, complications, and outcomes of PD between January 2011 and December 2016. Materials and methods: This study included all 56 neonates that underwent PD over six years in our neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).

This study describes an efficient and reusable process for ethanol production from medium containing whey powder, using alginate immobilized ethanologenic E. coli strains either expressing (TS3) or not expressing (FBR5) Vitreoscilla hemoglobin. Reuseabilities of the FBR5 and TS3 strains were investigated regarding their ethanol production capacities over the course of 15 successive 96-h batch fermentations.

Background: Penile fracture is a surgical emergency defined as rupture of the tunica albuginea. Although most cases can be diagnosed with clinical evaluation, it has been stated in the literature that diagnosis in as many as 15% of cases can be challenging. In uncertain cases, imaging can help determine diagnosis.

Background And Objectives: Our objective is to report intermediate-term outcomes for patients who have undergone upper tract urologic laparoendoscopic single-site surgery (LESS) at a single institution.

Methods: From January 1, 2008, through November 30, 2012, 107 cases treated with LESS were identified, including pyeloplasty (n = 30), ureterolithotomy (n = 32), nephrectomy (n = 35; simple = 31, partial = 4), and cyst decortication (n = 10). Perioperative data were reviewed, and conversion and complication rates were noted.

Introduction: Mutations of the human GNRH1 gene are an extremely rare cause of normosmic idiopathic hypogonadotropic hypogonadism (nIHH), with only 6 mutations so far described.

Patients: As part of a larger study, families with IHH were screened for mutations in genes known to be associated with IHH. In family 1, a 15-year and 9-month-old boy first presented during infancy with micropenis and bilateral cryptorchidism.

Background: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of clinical, laboratory and radiological results on treatment decision and surgical results in patients with blunt abdominal trauma, who were admitted to the emergency department due to traffic accident.

Methods: Two hundred and twenty-two patients with blunt abdominal trauma were included into this retrospective study. Pearson chi square, Mann-Whitney U test and logistic regression methods were used for statistical analysis.

To describe imaging features of different breast adenosis lesions. Mammographic and ultrasonographic findings of patients with different types of adenosis were reviewed retrospectively Tissue samples were obtained either with US-guided core needle biopsy or localization with needle-wire system and surgical excision. Forty-three adenosis lesions were diagnosed in 41 patients: 27 sclerosing adenosis, 13 blunt duct adenosis and 3 microglandular adenosis.

Abdominal wall hernias are a common problem in the general population. A Western estimate reveals that the lifetime risk of developing a hernia is about 2%. As a result, hernia repairs likely comprise the most frequent general surgery operations.

Article Synopsis
  • This study examined the effectiveness of the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) in diagnosing appendicitis before surgery and distinguishing between simple and complicated cases.
  • A total of 1,067 patients were assessed, with 897 diagnosed with acute appendicitis and their NLR values analyzed.
  • The findings indicated that an NLR of 4.68 could help identify acute appendicitis, while an NLR of 5.74 was linked to complicated appendicitis, suggesting that NLR can assist clinicians alongside traditional examinations.

Background: Several researchers have investigated how wound healing is effected by supplementation with each of the following amino acids : arginine (Arg), glutamine (Glu), and beta-hydroxy beta-methylbutyrate (HMB). This research investigates how a combination of these amino acids improves the wound healing associated with anastomoses.

Methods: We tested the effects of a combination of Arg, Glu, and HMB on the healing of colon anastomoses in 50 male rats.

Background: Ventral incisional hernias are more commonly associated with comorbid diseases when compared to other hernia types. We investigate the hypothesis that unfavourable local factors related to comorbid diseases may lead to incisional hernia development.

Materials And Methods: The characteristics of incisional hernia (71 patients), primary ventral hernia (114 patients)and groin hernia groups (820 patients) were analysed and compared among each other.

Background: Diverticulosis and diverticulitis of appendix vermiformis is a rare diagnosis. Clinical and laboratory examinations do not show a difference between a progressing diverticulitis and simplex appendicitis. But this entity has a higher mortality rate than common appendicitis.

Tc-99m methoxyisobutylisonitrile (MIBI) scintigraphy is generally used as a second-line diagnostic tool for obscured breast lesions. When the entire field of view is examined carefully, it is often possible to detect additional lesions unrelated to the initial intent and purpose of the examination. Herein we present a case of breast cancer incidentally detected by cardiac Tc-99m MIBI scintigraphy.

Background And Aim: It has been reported that femoral hernias are rather common after a previous repair of inguinal hernia. We herein present a modified patch repair technique for large femoral hernias that develop after a Lichtenstein operation for ipsilateral inguinal hernia.

Patients And Methods: The modified technique for femoral hernia was applied to three patients who had a Lichtenstein repair for inguinal hernia.

We present a case of immediate abdominal wall reconstruction with biologic mesh following the resection of locally advanced colonic cancer. The tumor in the right colon did not respond to neoadjuvant chemotherapy. Surgical enbloc excision, including excision of the invasion in the abdominal wall, was achieved, and the defect was reconstructed with porcine dermal collagen mesh.

The rates for three different types of anaesthesia used for elective inguinal hernia repairs were retrospectively searched for in the hospital records in 2005 and 2010. In 2005, only 2.1% of elective inguinal hernia repairs were done with local anaesthesia.

Background And Aims: There is no consensus among surgeons on the indication of putting drains for in groin hernias. In this study we aimed to investigate the factors that are associated with drain usage by comparing the clinical characteristics of patients who had drains with the patients without drains in the repair of groin hernias.

Material And Methods: The data of all groin hernia repairs from January 2006 till February 2010 in Ankara Diskapi Research Hospital were collected prospectively.
