The aim of this experiment was to investigate the effect of dietary supplementation of crushed high oleic sunflower seeds (HOS) and rumen-protected choline (RPC) on the fatty acid (FA) profile of phospholipids and sphingomyelin and mammary transcription of genes that are important for milk fat synthesis and de novo synthesis of sphingolipids. Twenty-four cows were divided into four groups that either received an unsupplemented diet (Control), the Control diet supplemented with 50 g RPC per day, a diet supplemented with HOS at 10% of dry matter, or RPC and HOS in combination (RPC + HOS). RPC supplementation had no effect on the FA composition of milk or sphingomyelin.

During the last trimester of gestation, twenty-one twin-bearing ewes were fed a normal diet fulfilling norms for energy and protein (NORM) or 50% of a normal diet (LOW). From day 3 postpartum to 6 months (around puberty) of age, one twin lamb was fed a conventional (CONV) diet and the other a high-carbohydrate-high-fat (HCHF) diet, resulting in four groups of offspring: NORM-CONV; NORMHCHF; LOW-CONV; LOW-HCHF.

A bovine MG model that allows repeated MG sampling in identical animals at different functional stages was used to test whether 1) ABCA1 and ABCG1 protein expression and subcellular localization in mammary epithelial cells (MEC) change during the pregnancy-lactation cycle, and 2) these 2 proteins were present in milk fat globules (MFG). View Article and Find Full Text PDFTo study the role of trace elements for the quality and nutritional value of bovine milk, the distribution of selenium, zinc, and copper in whey was investigated using a method linking size exclusion chromatography to inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (SEC-ICP-MS). Three major peaks were detected for selenium, two peaks for zinc, and five peaks for copper. More than 65% of the selenium was found in protein fractions, mainly in fractions coinciding with the major whey proteins beta-lactoglobulin and alpha-lactalbumin.

Objective: The objective was to investigate the effect of butter with a naturally high content of vaccenic acid and a concomitantly higher content of monounsaturated FAs on classic and novel risk markers of IHD.
We studied the transcription of selected genes involved in the regulation of cell turnover during milk stasis and lactation rescue in individual mammary glands of sows and evaluated the timeframe for lactation rescue and the subsequent productivity of rescued glands. Suckling was prevented in two glands from each of five sows by taping them the day after farrowing for 1 or 3 d (Closed 24 h and Closed 72 h glands, respectively). After removing the tape, Closed 24 h glands were suckled until weaning.
