We retrospectively confirmed 2 cases of human Anaplasma phagocytophilum infection. Patient blood samples contained unique p44/msp2 for the pathogen, and antibodies bound to A. phagocytophilum antigens propagated in THP-1 rather than HL60 cells.

A 77-year-old woman who have no past history, was admitted in a local hospital in Muroto City, Kochi, Japan, after several days of fever and severe general fatigue and generalized skin erythema. She was suspected to have Japanease spotted fever, which was a local pandemic disease. She was treated with minocycline immediately.

To characterize Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) strains recently prevalent in Japan, JEV surveillance was performed in pigs from 2002 to 2004. Eleven new JEV isolates were obtained and compared with previous isolates from Japan and other Asian countries. All of the isolates were classified into genotype 1 by nucleotide sequence analysis of the E gene.
