Introduction: Osteoporosis and tooth loss have been linked with advancing age, but no clear relationship between these conditions has been proven. Several studies of bone mineral density measurements of the jaw and spine have shown similarities in their rate of age-related deterioration. Thus, measurements of jawbone density may predict lumbar vertebral bone density.

The purpose of this study was to quantitatively evaluate Akahori's preoperative classification of cubital tunnel syndrome. We analyzed the results for 57 elbows that were treated by a simple decompression procedure from 1997 to 2004. The relationship between each item of Akahori's preoperative classification and clinical stage was investigated based on the parameter distribution.

Aim: In previous animal studies, we confirmed that linoleic acid (LNA) enhanced colon carcinogenesis, whereas eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) had protective effects in azoxymethane-induced colon tumorigenesis. In regard to the protective effects of marine n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) on colorectal cancer however, evidence from epidemiological studies is inconsistent.

Materials And Methods: In the present study we investigated the fatty acid composition in plasma, red blood cells (RBCs) and adipose tissue from Japanese patients with colorectal cancer, or benign disease.

Neuroinflammation is involved in the pathology of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Our major focus was to clarify whether neuroinflammation plays an important role in AD pathogenesis, particularly prior to the manifestation of overt dementia. We analyzed cytokine expression profiles of the brain, with focus on non-demented patients with increasing AD pathology, referred to as high pathology control (HPC) patients, who provide an intermediate subset between AD and normal control subjects, referred to as low pathology control (LPC) patients.

Plain X-ray radiography is frequently used for the diagnosis of developmental dislocation of the hip (DDH). The aim of this study was to construct a diagnostic support system for DDH based on clinical findings obtained from the X-ray images of 154 female infants with confirmed diagnoses made by orthopedists. The data for these subjects were divided into 2 groups.

The composition of fatty acids in abdominal subcutaneous adipose tissue and the correlation of fatty acid values of plasma and erythrocytes had not been reported in Japan. The aim of the present study was to investigate the fatty acid composition and correlation of plasma and erythrocyte phospholipids (PL) and adipose triacylglycerols (TG) in 75 adult patients admitted for non-malignant diseases. We also examined the relationship of n-3 and n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) with patients' characteristics.

It is likely that neuroinflammation begins well before detectable cognitive impairment in Alzheimer's disease (AD) occurs. Clarifying the alterations occurring prior to the clinical manifestation of overt AD dementia may provide valuable insight into the early diagnosis and management of AD. Herein, to address the issue that neuroinflammation precedes development of AD pathology, we analyzed cytokine expression profiles of the brain, with focus on non-demented control patients with increasing AD pathology, referred to as high pathology control (HPC) cases, who provide an intermediate subset between AD and normal control cases referred to as low pathology control (LPC) cases.

Introduction: Clonazepam has been shown to be an effective supplementary treatment for depression. Thus, it would be useful to determine which patient characteristics are associated with response to clonazepam.

Aims: The purpose of this study was to examine the possible predictors of response to clonazepam in the treatment of depression.

Introduction: Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and dual serotonin and noradrenaline reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) are the most commonly prescribed classes of antidepressants, yet it is not known whether one is superior to the other. It seems that an investigation of the characteristics of patients being treated with SSRIs and SNRIs would be useful in determining which patients would be most likely to benefit from these antidepressant medications.

Aims: The purpose of this retrospective study was to compare the response to fluvoxamine, paroxetine and milnacipran treatment for depression with regard to patient age.

Background: Early prediction of infection following surgery for gastric cancer may permit earlier intervention.

Aim: The aim was to develop an early diagnostic system for postoperative infection.

Methods: Clinical and laboratory data were analyzed in 180 patients who had surgery for gastric cancer at the Wakayama Medical University Hospital (January 1992 to December 1994).

Introduction: An investigation of the proportion of patients who have experienced mania with antidepressant treatment and their characteristics would seem to be of clinical use.

Aims: The purpose of this clinical study was to examine the predictors of induction of mania in depression patients as a result of paroxetine treatment.

Method: A retrospective cohort analysis was carried out among depression patients treated in the Department of Psychiatry, Kawasaki Medical School Hospital, Kurashiki, Japan, in 2000 and 2001.

Introduction: Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and dual serotonin and noradrenaline reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) are the most commonly prescribed class of antidepressants, yet it is not known whether one is superior to another.

Aims: The purpose of this clinical practice was to compare the periods of onset of action of fluvoxamine, paroxetine and milnacipran.

Methods: A retrospective cohort analysis was carried out among out-patients with depression treated in the Department of Psychiatry, Kawasaki Medical School Hospital, Kurashiki, Japan, in 2000 and 2001.

The purpose of the present paper was to determine the suitable dose and appropriate trial duration of fluvoxamine to treat for depression. A retrospective cohort analysis was performed among depression patients who were treated in the Department of Psychiatry, Kawasaki Medical School Hospital, Kurashiki, Japan, in 2000. A total of 72 patients received fluvoxamine to treat depression.

We examined the relation between dosage and efficacy, and the predictors of response to milnacipran. There was no difference between 50 and 100 mg dose. However, the 100 mg dose had a faster onset of action than the 50 mg dose.
