Predictors of success for smoking cessation at the workplace: a longitudinal study.

Background: The effectiveness of worksite interventions to reduce smoking is debatable.

Objectives: A comprehensive smoking cessation intervention was implemented in a community of more than 17,000 employees at three different health care companies. The primary endpoint was abstinence at 24 months (self-reported and confirmed by exhaled carbon monoxide ≤ 6 parts per million).

Working towards a test for screening visual skills in a complex visual environment.

We developed a test for screening visual skills under similar conditions as at workplace. The test was administered to 207 participants, recruited in the working population. Six-digit numbers were super-imposed on a video of a drive and presented for 300 ms in the central visual field and in the periphery.

Frequent loss of expression of the pro-apoptotic protein Bim in renal cell carcinoma: evidence for contribution to apoptosis resistance.

Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is resistant to chemotherapy, and this resistance is mirrored by a high apoptosis resistance of many RCC lines in vitro. Here, we report the loss of the pro-apoptotic BH3-only protein Bim in a large part of clinical RCC cases and provide evidence for a functional relevance of this loss. Immunohistochemistry of clear cell renal cell carcinoma cases and corresponding normal kidney showed strong Bim reactivity in renal tubules of all cases but loss of Bim in 35 of 45 RCC samples.

Broad degradation of proapoptotic proteins with the conserved Bcl-2 homology domain 3 during infection with Chlamydia trachomatis.

Chlamydiae are obligate intracellular bacteria that can inhibit apoptosis of their host cell. As shown recently, this inhibition is in part explained by the proteolytic degradation of the proapoptotic Bcl-2 family members (BH3-only proteins) Bim, Puma, and Bad upon chlamydial infection. In this study, we further explore this antiapoptotic mechanism.

Functional evaluation of the apoptosome in renal cell carcinoma.

Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) responds very poorly to chemo- or radiotherapy. Renal cell carcinoma cell lines have been described to be resistant to apoptosis-inducing stimuli and to lack caspase expression. The early protein P35 from the baculovirus Autographa californica nucleopolyhedrovirus is a direct inhibitor of caspases and can block apoptosis in a wide variety of systems. Biosafety investigations in an r-DNA production plant.

Employees of a biotechnological production plant for recombinant interferon alpha-2a have been participating in a 1-year study on occupational hygiene and the resulting biosafety aspects. Most of the employees have been employed in the plant for more than 6 years. Weekly stool samples were analysed for tetracycline (used as selection marker)-resistant coliforms as well as for rDNA (IFN gene) (interferon gene) and for the production organism.
