R-spondins (RSPOs) are a family of secreted proteins and stem cell growth factors that are potent co-activators of Wnt signaling. Recently, RSPO2 and RSPO3 were shown to be multifunctional, not only amplifying Wnt- but also binding BMP- and FGF receptors to downregulate signaling. The common mechanism underlying these diverse functions is that RSPO2 and RSPO3 act as "endocytosers" that link transmembrane proteins to ZNRF3/RNF43 E3 ligases and trigger target internalization.

Avian malaria is expanding upslope with warmer temperatures and driving multiple species of Hawaiian birds towards extinction. Methods to reduce malaria transmission are urgently needed to prevent further declines. Releasing Wolbachia-infected incompatible male mosquitoes could suppress mosquito populations and releasing Wolbachia-infected female mosquitoes (or both sexes) could reduce pathogen transmission if the Wolbachia strain reduced vector competence.

Background And Aims: Computer-aided detection (CADe) devices have been shown to increase adenoma detection rates and adenomas per colonoscopy compared to standard colonoscopies. Questions remain about whether CADe colonoscopies are mainly increasing the detection of small, nonneoplastic lesions or if they are detecting more pathologically meaningful polyps. Tumor recurrence and drug resistance are responsible for poor prognosis in colorectal cancer (CRC). DNA mismatch repair (MMR) deficiency or elevated interleukin-8 (IL-8) levels are characteristics of CRCs, which have been independently correlated with treatment resistance to common therapies. Background: Determinants of maternal-fetal cytomegalovirus (CMV) transmission and factors influencing the severity of congenital CMV (cCMV) infection are not well understood.

Methods: We conducted a descriptive, multicenter study in pregnant women ≥18 years old with primary CMV infection and their newborns to explore maternal immune responses to CMV and determine potential immunologic/virologic correlates of cCMV following primary infection during pregnancy. We developed alternative approaches looking into univariate/multivariate factors associated with cCMV, including a participant clustering/stratification approach and an interpretable predictive model-based approach using trained decision trees for risk prediction (post hoc analyses).

As computer systems dedicated to scientific calculations become massively parallel, the poor parallel performance of the Fock matrix diagonalization becomes a major impediment to achieving larger molecular sizes in self-consistent field (SCF) calculations. In this Article, a novel, highly parallel, and diagonalization-free algorithm for the accelerated convergence of the SCF procedure is presented. The algorithm, called Q-Next, draws on the second-order SCF, quadratically convergent SCF, and direct inversion of the iterative subspace (DIIS) approaches to enable fast convergence while replacing the Fock matrix diagonalization SCF bottleneck with higher parallel efficiency matrix multiplications.
