Article Synopsis
  • Hypereosinophilia (HE) is characterized by an eosinophil count over 1500 cells/microL in blood tests, confirmed by either blood tests or high eosinophil percentages in bone marrow samples. Hypereosinophilic syndrome (HES) involves organ damage due to eosinophils and can be classified as primary, secondary, or idiopathic.
  • Cardiac issues occur in 5% of acute cases and 20% of chronic cases of HES, presenting symptoms like heart failure and arrhythmias, but the severity of heart problems isn't always proportional to eosinophil levels.
  • Diagnosis of cardiac involvement relies on advanced imaging techniques, particularly

Multiple myeloma (MM) associated with Chagas disease is rarely described. This disease and its therapy suppress T cell and macrophage functions and increase regulatory T cell function, allowing the increase of parasitemia and the risk of Chagas Disease Reactivation (CDR). We aimed to analyze the role of conventional (cPCR) and quantitative Polymerase Chain Reaction (qPCR) for prospective monitoring of T.

Background: Systemic amyloidosis is caused by the deposition of misfolded protein aggregates in tissues, leading to progressive organ dysfunction and death. Epidemiological studies originate predominantly from high-income countries, with few data from Latin America. Due to the non-specific clinical manifestations, diagnosing amyloidosis is often challenging and patients experience a long journey and delay in diagnosis.

Chagas disease (CD), caused by the protozoan parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, affects 8 million people, and around 1/3 develop chronic cardiac (CCC) or digestive disease (megaesophagus/megacolon), while the majority remain asymptomatic, in the indeterminate form of Chagas disease (ASY). Most CCC cases in families with multiple Chagas disease patients carry damaging mutations in mitochondrial genes. We searched for exonic mutations associated to chagasic megaesophagus (CME) in genes essential to mitochondrial processes.

Introduction: Treatment-free remission (TFR) is a new goal of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) therapy. TFR is feasible when the patient has achieved a deep and stable molecular response and met the criteria required to ensure its success. Treatment discontinuation should not be proposed to the CML patient if minimum conditions are not met.

Extraordinary progress has been made over the last decade in the treatment of multiple myeloma with the incorporation of new drugs, particularly proteasome inhibitors, immunomodulators, and monoclonal antibodies. The combined use of innovative drugs, already in the first lines of treatment, has led to an expressive increase in the survival of these patients. However, the approach to relapse remains a great challenge, and the disease continues to be incurable.

This manuscript summarizes the results of the consensus meeting composed of hematologists and cardiologists to establish recommendations for the prevention and follow-up of cardiovascular (CV) risk in patients with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) treated with BCR-ABL tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) from the point of view of clinical practice and from the perspective of hematology consultation. In the first medical appointment, the CV risk factors should be identified to perform the baseline risk stratification, based on the Brazilian Guideline of Dyslipidemia and Atherosclerosis Prevention Update (risk levels: very high, high, intermediate and low). Once stratified, the treatment of the CV risk factors should be administered.

Background: Untreated Obstructive Sleep Apnea Hypnopnea Syndrome (OSAHS) is a known factor contributing to resistant hypertension (HT). Continuous Positive Airways Pressure (CPAP) is effective to decrease blood pressure (BP) in severe OSAHS. In our clinical practice, hypertensive patients seem less symptomatic with regard to severe OSAHS than normotensive patients, leading to a risk of underdiagnosis when OSAHS is screened with Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS).

Article Synopsis
  • Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is a genetic condition that leads to high cholesterol levels and increased risk for early coronary heart disease (CHD), particularly in patients with identified genetic mutations (mutation+ FH).
  • A study compared the health profiles of patients with mutation+ FH to those without mutations (mutation- FH), finding that mutation+ FH patients had worse lipid profiles and experienced earlier onset of CHD.
  • Results showed that patients with mutation+ FH had significantly higher LDL cholesterol levels and a 3 times greater risk of developing premature CHD compared to those with mutation- FH.
