Introduction: The aim of the study was to evaluate the safety of the modified posteromedial approach (MfPM) in the surgical management of complex ankle fractures in terms of local complications.

Methods: Retrospective multicenter review of a series of malleolar fractures surgically treated by posterior ankle approaches between 2016 and 2022. Two approaches were used.

Progression of the disease is enhanced by increased oxidative stress in the retina, aqueous humor, plasma, and liver of RP animal models and patients. Melatonin has beneficial effects against age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy, in which oxidative stress plays a key role.

Background: Apheresis procedures require adequate vascular access to achieve adequate inlet flow rates. Central dialysis-type catheters are often used in apheresis, despite their multiple risks. Peripheral venous access is a safe and effective option for many patients.

Correct approach selection in talar neck injuries is crucial to obtain adequate access to the entire fracture site avoiding malreduction and angular deformity. The major concern about a single incision technique is lack of visualization. Methods: We included patients undergoing CRT device implantation between October 2015 and December 2016 in 36 participating Spanish centers. We registered the patients' baseline characteristics, implant procedure data, and short-term follow-up information until hospital discharge.

The utility of therapeutic plasma exchange for amphotericin B overdose.

Medication error is a preventable cause of morbidity and death in the inpatient population. We describe a patient with an antifungal overdose treated with therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE). The patient was diagnosed with cryptococcal meningitis and received an acute overdose of amphotericin B deoxycholate instead of the prescribed liposomal amphotericin B.

[HIV in Spain 2017: policies for a new management of chronicity beyond virological control].

The analysis of the available databases related to HIV/AIDS confirms a paradigm shift in the patient's life expectancy: now HIV has become a chronic disease, so patients are aging. However, this advance is accompanied by a negative counterpart: due to the increase in the number of years of life gained, there is a prevalence of comorbidities greater than the general population and at an earlier age. Reducing the risk associated with all the comorbidities that the ageing patient with HIV/AIDS may develop, must now be a health objective; it must be added to the traditional objectives that until now were part of the strategy to reduce the impact of the HIV infection.

Hepatic oxidative stress in pigmented P23H rhodopsin transgenic rats with progressive retinal degeneration.

Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) comprises a group of inherited retinal degenerative conditions characterized by primary degeneration of the rod photoreceptors. Increased oxidative damage is observed in the retina, aqueous humor, and plasma of RP animal models and patients. The hepatic oxidative status may also be affected in RP due to oxidative damage influencing soluble macromolecules exiting the retina or to alterations in the melanopsin system resulting in chronic circadian desynchronization that negatively alters the oxidative stress defense system.

Development of optokinetic tracking software for objective evaluation of visual function in rodents.

The aim of this study was to develop software that performs the optokinetic tracking assessment without the involvement of experimenters to increase the objectivity of the test. To check the effectiveness of the software, several videos were analyzed and the results were compared to those produced by two experimenters. Videos consisted of visual acuity and contrast sensitivity tests on normal animals and pigmented P23H rats (animal model of retinitis pigmentosa).

Methods: We included HIV-positive antiretroviral therapy-naive, AIDS-free individuals aged 50-70 years after 2004 in the HIV-CAUSAL Collaboration.

Hardware/Software Data Acquisition System for Real Time Cell Temperature Monitoring in Air-Cooled Polymer Electrolyte Fuel Cells.

This work presents a hardware/software data acquisition system developed for monitoring the temperature in real time of the cells in Air-Cooled Polymer Electrolyte Fuel Cells (AC-PEFC). These fuel cells are of great interest because they can carry out, in a single operation, the processes of oxidation and refrigeration. This allows reduction of weight, volume, cost and complexity of the control system in the AC-PEFC.
