Background: Treatment of acid-resistance high-translucent zirconia prior to luting procedures is usually carried out with sandblasting. Considering that this process could lead to the formation of cracks on the zirconia surface, laser irradiation became an alternative to sandblasting. The effect of diode laser, however, was never investigated under this context.

This study aimed to analyze the concentrations of VEGF, b-FGF, TNF, interleukin (IL)-1, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, and IL-12 in the aqueous humor of patients with diabetic macular edema with and without peripheral retinal ischemia and to ascertain the changes in the levels of these molecules during treatment with ranibizumab. A therapeutic, prospective, randomized interventional study was carried out. Twenty-four eyes from 24 patients were studied and divided into 3 groups.

Esthetic treatment planning with digital animation of the smile dynamics: A technique to create a 4-dimensional virtual patient.

A method is presented for obtaining a virtual 4-dimensional patient that replicates the intended esthetic treatment. The process involves facial and intraoral scanning to acquire records and software manipulation to enable a virtual waxing of the smile. Once the digital design is complete, patient information can be merged to generate an animated video of the projected rehabilitation, displaying movement and smile dynamics.

A Sensor for Spirometric Feedback in Ventilation Maneuvers during Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Training.

This work proposes adapting an existing sensor and embedding it on mannequins used in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training to accurately measure the amount of air supplied to the lungs during ventilation. Mathematical modeling, calibration, and validation of the sensor along with metrology, statistical inference, and spirometry techniques were used as a base for aquiring scientific knowledge of the system. The system directly measures the variable of interest (air volume) and refers to spirometric techniques in the elaboration of its model.

Background: Antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) shows antimicrobial activity on yeast of the genus Candida. In aPDT, the depth at which the light penetrates the tissue is extremely important for the elaboration of the treatment. Evaluation of stiffness and plastic deformation of active ceramic self-ligating bracket clips after repetitive opening and closure movements.

Objective: The aim of this study was to assess whether repetitive opening and closure of self-ligating bracket clips can cause plastic deformation of the clip.

Methods: Three types of active/interactive ceramic self-ligating brackets (n = 20) were tested: In-Ovation C, Quicklear and WOW. A standardized controlled device performed 500 cycles of opening and closure movements of the bracket clip with proper instruments and techniques adapted as recommended by the manufacturer of each bracket type.

We evaluated electromyograms of masticatory muscles after denture relining with soft and hard liners. In total, 44 patients with complete dentures were studied: 22 underwent chairside relining of mandibular dentures with a soft, silicone-based liner (Mucopren Soft); the other 22 underwent relining with a hard, acrylic resin-based liner (Kooliner). Electromyograms of the masseter and temporal muscles were obtained before (T0) and 90 days after (T90) relining.

The role of psychoneuroimmune interactions in the pathogenesis of ligature-induced periodontal disease in Wistar rats.

The aim of the present study was to determine the role of chronic stress in the pathogenesis of ligature-induced periodontal disease in rats. Fifty-three Wistar rats were randomly assigned to 4 experimental groups: 1--ligature; 2--ligature + stress; 3--stress only; 4--control. After 30 days the animals were sacrificed, blood samples were collected and histological sections were made for histometric analysis.

Herpetic stromal disease: response to acyclovir/steroid therapy.

The efficacy of combined acyclovir and steroid therapy in the treatment of herpetic stromal disease was evaluated by clinical evaluation of disease, the rebound of disease following termination of therapy, and the recovery of virus and viral DNA from corneas in a rabbit model. Therapy with acyclovir alone produced a significant reduction in corneal thickness in 10% of eyes. Addition of steroid to acyclovir therapy decreased the severity of stromal disease as measured by corneal thickness and increased the frequency of response to treatment to 63% of eyes.
