Improving the sustainability of the European livestock sector requires recent data at high spatial resolutions. Only then can we analyse potential negative impacts of livestock related to ecosystem degradation, and positive ones such as preserving cultural landscapes through grazing. Data on livestock numbers in Europe are provided by the European statistical office but at a coarse spatial resolution aggregated to statistical regions like NUTS2 or even coarser.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates the role of the P2X7 receptor in causing astrocytes to shift into activated neuroinflammatory states, especially after an increase in intraocular pressure (IOP).
  • - Results showed that activating the P2X7 receptor led to a rise in genes indicative of both A1-type and A2-type astrocyte activation, indicating a mixed activation state.
  • - The findings suggest that the P2X7 receptor is essential for astrocyte activation in the retina when IOP is elevated, correlating the receptor's activity with both microglial and astrocyte response mechanisms in glaucoma.

Unlabelled: Piezo channels are associated with neuropathology in diseases like traumatic brain injury and glaucoma, but pathways linking tissue stretch to aberrant neural signaling remain unclear. The present study demonstrates that Piezo1 activation increases action potential frequency in response to light and the spontaneous dark signal from mouse retinal explants. Piezo1 stimulation was sufficient to increase cytoplasmic Ca in soma and neurites, while stretch increased spiking activity in current clamp recordings from of isolated retinal ganglion cells (RGCs).

Background: Discoloration of carious lesions after application of silver diamine fluoride lowers patient acceptance and limits its wider use for caries arrest.

Objective: To assess lesion and tooth color changes from 2 novel silver fluoride (AgF) products and its relationship to caries activity (clinical visuo-tactile scores) and bacterial load (using laser fluorescence with the DIAGNOdent).

Methods: A split-mouth design was followed, with matched smooth surface carious lesions in the same arch in adults with special needs randomized for 1-min treatments with AgF/potassium iodide (KI) (Riva Star Aqua, SDI) and AgF/stannous fluoride (SnF) (Caries Status Disclosing Solution; Whiteley).

Article Synopsis
  • Inhaled nitric oxide (iNO) has been increasingly used over the past 15 years in Taiwan for treating hypoxemic respiratory failure in very low birth weight preterm infants, often in combination with milrinone.
  • A study compared outcomes between infants treated with iNO alone and those receiving both iNO and milrinone, finding that the combined treatment group had significantly higher mortality rates (55.1% vs. 13.5%) and worse respiratory conditions.
  • The study concluded that combining iNO with milrinone does not provide benefits in terms of one-year survival or reducing bronchopulmonary dysplasia, suggesting the need for further research to explore this treatment approach.

Purpose: While silver diamine fluoride has been used extensively for caries arrest and desensitising, silver fluoride (AgF) at neutral pH may also have value as a minimally invasive dental caries treatment. This study explored the effectiveness of two AgF products (AgF/KI and AgF/SnF) when used in adult patients with special needs (SN) who had high caries risk and salivary gland hypofunction.

Methods: This split-mouth clinical study, over two appointments 3-months apart, compared the impact of a single application of AgF/KI (Riva Star Aqua, SDI) and AgF/SnF (Creighton Dental CSDS, Whiteley) on matched carious lesions in the same arch, by clinical visual-tactile (cVT) assessment of caries status and laser fluorescence (LF, DIAGNOdent) evaluation of bacterial load in the lesions, using repeated measures analysis.

Background: Clinical practicum is crucial for strengthening nursing students' clinical competence. However, nursing students often experience considerable stress during clinical practicum, and so they employ coping strategies to alleviate it. There is almost no empirical evidence on the change trajectory of perceived stress, coping strategies, and clinical competence among nursing students during a one-year clinical practicum.

The central dogma of pain in patients with chronic pancreatitis revolves around the pathophysiology of ductal hypertension owing to stones that obstruct the pancreatic duct. Conventional modalities available to decompress the pancreatic duct are occasionally limited by failed selective pancreatic duct cannulation during endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography. We describe a novel endoscopic approach of EUS-guided laser lithotripsy to assist in pancreatic duct (PD) stone fragmentation in two symptomatic patients with underlying chronic pancreatitis who had failed PD cannulation and extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL).
