Endoscopic third ventriculostomy (ETV) is a hydrocephalus treatment procedure that involves opening the Liliequist membrane (LM). However, LM anatomy has not been well-studied neuroendoscopically, because approach angles differ between descriptive and microsurgical anatomical explorations. Discrepancies in ETV efficacy, especially among children age 2 and younger, may be due to incomplete LM opening.

A few case reports of CAA-related intracerebral hemorrhage after head injury, usually following a fall, have been published. More rarely, it may occur in the setting of a traffic accident, with only four cases having been reported.

Objective: To clarify the anatomical aspects and structures taking part of the posterior atlanto-occipital and atlanto-axial area.
A case of endolymphatic sac adenocarcinoma is reported and the literature is reviewed. The clinical picture was presented by vertigo and progressive hearing loss caused by a tumor of the endolymphatic sac. The surgical removal was complete, via a retro and translabyrinthine approach.

Method: A macro and microscopical study of brain lesions in 120 victims of fatal road traffic accident, independent of the survival time, was made. The patients were autopsied in the Instituto Médico Legal de Minas Gerais, in Belo Horizonte, from 1989 to 1993.
A simplification of the graphic and arithmetical method traditionally used for determination of the target stereotactic coordinates in the computed tomography is presented. The arithmetical calculation, besides simpler, is theoretically more accurate for using a real point of the stereotactic space. The proposed diagram (graphic method) presents the advantage of allowing the determination of the target stereotactic coordinates independently of the computed tomographic image size.

It is an exceptional occurrence, having been described only six cases, with several mechanisms being proposed. The proximity of the lesions with the low cerebral convexity (perisylvian) suggests the compromising of the secondary somatosensorial area, seeming to prove the experimental observation of somatosensorial crises originating in this area.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFThis article describes the professional lives of the founders of neurological surgery in Brazil as well as the Brazilian Society of Neurosurgery. The pioneers were Augusto Brandão Filho, the first general surgeon to perform brain surgery in Brazil, and José Ribe Portugal and Elyseu Paglioli, the founders of the first two neurosurgery schools in Brazil. The Brazilian Society of Neurosurgery was founded in Brussels, Belgium, on July 26, 1957, during the First International Congress of Neurological Surgery, at the initiative of José Ribe Portugal and José Geraldo Albernaz.
