Many surgery departments are implementing telemedicine to enhance remote perioperative care. Background: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome virus (SARS-CoV-2) is challenging global public health, due to an increasing demand for testing and the shortage of diagnostic supplies. Nasopharyngeal swab (NPS) is considered the optimal sample for SARS-CoV2 diagnosis and sputum (SPT) has been proposed as an economic alternative. However, the temporal concordance of diagnosis in NPS and SPT has not been addressed.

[Primary musculo-skeletal echinococcosis of chronic evolution].

Cystic echinococcosis is a chronic parasitic zoonosis of high prevalence in Chile. We report a clinical case of a 66-year-old man, domiciled in an urban area of the Maule Region, who presents skeletal muscle cystic echinococcosis. Consultation for pain, volume increase and left thigh fistula that gives out crystalline fluid.

[Morbidity profile among adolescents with Down syndrome].

Background: There is a paucity of information about morbidity and mortality of adolescents with Down syndrome (DS).

Aim: To describe morbidity and mortality of a cohort of Chilean adolescents with DS.

Material And Methods: Review of electronic clinical records of 67 ambulatory patients with DS aged 10 to 20 years (37 women), seen between the years 2007 and 2014 in outpatient clinics of a University hospital.

[Alcohol consumption among traveling Chilean older people].

Background: Problems associated with alcohol consumption are prevalent in Chile, but little is known about the situation in the elderly.

Aim: To perform a screening to detect alcohol-related problems and risks in the Chilean older people who travel.

Material And Methods: The Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) questionnaire was answered by 1,076 travelers aged 60 to 93 years (66% females), who participated in trips organized by the Chilean National Tourism Service (SERNATUR).

Thalidomide for the treatment of metastatic hepatic epithelioid hemangioendothelioma: a case report with a long term follow-up.

Hepatic epithelioid hemangioendothelioma (HEH) is an unusual, low-grade malignant vascular tumor of the liver. Here we describe a case of a 40-year-old woman who presented with abdominal pain in the upper right quadrant and giant hepatomegaly, in which imaging studies and a fine-needle liver biopsy confirmed the presence of a large EHE with an isolated lung metastasis. After balancing all possible therapeutic modalities the patient was treated conservatively with thalidomide (300 mg/day).

Value of adenosine deaminase (ADA) in ascitic fluid for the diagnosis of tuberculous peritonitis: a meta-analysis.

Background And Goals: Adenosine deaminase (ADA) levels are used for diagnosing tuberculosis in several locations and although many studies have evaluated ADA levels in ascitic fluid. These studies have defined arbitrary cut-off points creating difficulties in the clinical application of the results. The goals of this study are: to determine the usefulness of ADA levels in ascitic fluid as a diagnostic test for peritoneal tuberculosis (PTB) and define the best cut-off point.
