Stroke is one of the main causes of permanent disability and death and the risk increases with age. Primary and secondary prevention therefore have a high priority. The treatment of risk factors, such as high blood pressure, diabetes mellitus and hyperlipidemia is just as important as anticoagulation in atrial fibrillation, in addition to optimization of lifestyle and diet.

This study aimed to investigate the relationship between the distance to the thrombus (DT) and both ischemic lesion volume (ILV) and clinical outcomes.
Methods: We retrospectively evaluated patients with thromboembolic MCA M1 segment occlusion who underwent neurovascular imaging followed by endovascular thrombectomy (EVT) at two comprehensive stroke centers over a 3-year period (2018-2020).
Background: Endovascular therapy (EVT) has been established as a major component in the acute treatment of large vessel occlusion stroke. However, it is unclear whether outcome and other treatment-related factors differ if patients are treated within or outside core working hours.
Methods: We analyzed data from the prospective nationwide Austrian Stroke Unit Registry capturing all consecutive stroke patients treated with EVT between 2016 and 2020.
Background And Purpose: Previous studies investigating prolonged electrocardiogram (ECG)-monitoring after ischemic stroke had significant gaps between the index event and the beginning of long-term monitoring. Atrial fibrillation (AF) detection might be higher if prolonged cardiac rhythm documentation is performed with a gapless approach without any interruption of monitoring time.
Methods: This investigator-initiated, prospective study included patients with acute ischemic stroke or transient ischemic attack at three study centers.
Purpose: Although there is class I evidence for mechanical thrombectomy (MT) for anterior circulation large vessel occlusion (LVO) stroke, no high-class evidence exists for the posterior circulation. Here, we sought to compare clinical features of anterior versus posterior LVO as well as predictors of a posterior LVO MT outcome.
Methods: Patients with acute ischemic stroke who underwent MT for anterior and posterior LVO stroke between February 2016 and August 2020 from 2 comprehensive stroke centers were reviewed.
Background: Pooled data of randomized controlled trials investigating mechanical thrombectomy (MT) to treat anterior circulation large vessel occlusion have demonstrated safety and effectiveness across all age groups, including ≥ 80 years of age; however, only a few nonagenarians were in the ≥ 80 years subgroup. Therefore, the benefit of MT in nonagenarians is mostly unknown.

Methods: Between January 2014 and February 2017, 138 patients (25.4% women; median age 71 years) underwent Casper stent implantation for carotid artery stenosis.
Background And Purpose: Current guidelines do not recommend the use of intravenous recombinant tissue plasminogen activator in patients with acute ischemic stroke who receive direct oral anticoagulants. While the humanized monoclonal antibody idarucizumab can quickly reverse the anticoagulant effects of the thrombin inhibitor dabigatran, safety data for subsequent tissue plasminogen activator treatment are sparse. Here, we review current knowledge about dabigatran reversal prior to systemic reperfusion treatment in acute ischemic stroke.

Methods: Current demographic information was obtained from EUROSTAT, and information on age- and sex-stratified 1-year incidence rates of ischemic stroke were obtained from the Austrian Stroke-Unit Registry. Sensitivity analysis was performed by analyzing the projections based on predicted ageing, main, and growth population scenarios, and with stratification by age and gender.
Spinal cord infarction (SCI) is a rare but disabling disorder caused by a wide spectrum of conditions. Given the lack of randomized-controlled trials, contemporary treatment concepts are adapted from guidelines for cerebral ischemia, atherosclerotic vascular disease, and acute traumatic spinal cord injury. In addition, patients with SCI are at risk for several potentially life-threatening but preventable systemic and neurologic complications.

Between 2006 and 2009, 47 stroke patients were treated in peripheral hospitals in the county of Salzburg in Austria by intravenous thrombolysis via telemedicine; 304 patients who were treated with intravenous thrombolysis at a stroke unit served as the control group. The mean age of the patients was 67 years in the telemedicine group and 71 years in the control group.

Sensory deficits were most frequent in MS and in myelopathy of unknown origin. In spinal cord infarction motor deficits and sphincter dysfunction were present in all cases.
