Exercising regularly promotes health, but these benefits are complicated by acute inflammation induced by exercise. A potential source of inflammation is cell-free DNA (cfDNA), yet the cellular origins, molecular causes, and immune system interactions of exercise-induced cfDNA are unclear. To study these, 10 healthy individuals were randomized to a 12-wk exercise program of either high-intensity tactical training (HITT) or traditional moderate-intensity training (TRAD).

However, structural inequities stymie the entry of trainees from underrepresented in medicine (URiM) backgrounds into the physician-scientist pipeline. The Preparation for Graduate and Medical Education (PARAdiGM) program was designed to provide students from underrepresented backgrounds early exposure to physician-scientist training in the context of ample mentorship and programmatic support.

Objective: To characterize technical success, 30-day severe adverse events, and long-term outcome of percutaneous cecostomy at two centers.
Materials And Methods: A retrospective review of hospital course and long-term follow-up (through May 2022) of percutaneous cecostomy tubes placed May 1997 to August 2011 at two children's hospitals was used.
Introduction: Most students in MD-PhD programs take a leave of absence from medical school to complete PhD training, which promotes a natural loss of clinical skills and knowledge and could negatively impact a student's long-term clinical knowledge. To address this concern, clinical refresher courses in the final year of PhD training have traditionally been used; however, effectiveness of such courses versus a longitudinal clinical course spanning all PhD training years is unclear.
Methods: The University of Alabama at Birmingham MD-PhD Program implemented a comprehensive continuing clinical education (CCE) course spanning PhD training years that features three course components: (1) clinical skills; (2) clinical knowledge; and (3) specialty exposure activities.
Acute exercise elicits dynamic transcriptional changes that, when repeated, form the fundamental basis of health, resilience, and performance adaptations. While moderate-intensity endurance training combined with conventional resistance training (traditional, TRAD) is often prescribed and recommended by public health guidance, high-intensity training combining maximal-effort intervals with intensive, limited-rest resistance training is a time-efficient alternative that may be used tactically (HITT) to confer similar benefits. Mechanisms of action of these distinct stimuli are incompletely characterized and have not been directly compared.

The molecular mechanisms driving this heterogeneity have yet to be elucidated. Furthermore, OA disproportionately impacts females, suggesting a need for identifying female-specific therapeutic targets.

As the principal avenue for physician-scientist development, combined MD-PhD training programs and NIH-funded Medical Scientist Training Programs (MSTPs) must address all aspects of career development, including grant writing skills.
Methods: The NIH F-series grants - the F30 grant in particular - model the NIH format of federal funding, and are thus ideal opportunities to acquire biomedical research grant preparation experience.
Introduction: Postpartum hemorrhage is the leading cause of maternal mortality worldwide, and optimal management requires accurate blood loss estimations. The aim of this study was to assess whether differences exist between visually estimated blood loss vs. actual blood loss based on delivery mode, blood volume or distribution/location and knowledge of patient's current cardiovascular status.

However, ∼30% suffer long-term mobility impairment following surgery. This may be in part due to muscle inflammation susceptibility (MuIS+), an overt proinflammatory pathology localized to skeletal muscle surrounding the diseased joint, present in some patients with TKA/THA.

In the current study, we hypothesized that regional access to a student MD-PhD conference, termed the Southeastern Medical Scientist Symposium (SEMSS), would enhance medical and/or graduate training by fostering such relationships between physician-scientist trainees, doing so by discussing both the challenges of physician-scientist training and effective strategies to overcome them. In the current study, we used a mixed-methods approach to evaluate the overall usefulness of SEMSS over a ten-year period (2010-2020) to identify key areas of particular benefit to trainees.

Currently, there is no cure for osteoarthritis, but many emerging therapies have been developed to aid in the mitigation of disease progression. When osteoarthritis reaches the end-stage of disease many patients undergo total joint arthroplasty to improve quality of life, yet some experience persistent pain and mobility limitations for extended periods following surgery.

Academic medical institutions nationwide have developed continued clinical training and exposure to maintain clinical competence; however, quantitative assessment of their usefulness remains largely unexplored. The current study therefore sought to both implement and optimize an online game platform to support MD-PhD students throughout their research training.

In particular, angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors have shown potential to positively influence function. However, randomized, controlled trials are needed to confirm this hypothesis.

Background: Obesity alters whole body kinematics during activities of daily living such as sit-to-stand (STS), but the relative contributions of excess body mass and decreased relative strength are unknown.
Methods: Three-dimensional motion analysis data was collected on 18 obese subjects performing sit-to-stand (chair height: 52 cm). Isometric knee extensor strength was measured at 90 knee flexion.
Accurate measures of body composition (BC) are essential for performance and health. In addition to accuracy, BC measures should be practical and be minimally invasive to maximize their utility. The purpose of the present study was to compare the day-to-day variability and validity of four common laboratory-based body composition assessments to a criterion four-compartment model.

This is due to energy compensation in response to ExEE, which may include increases in energy intake (EI) and decreases in non-exercise physical activity (NEPA). We examined the degree of energy compensation in healthy young men and women in response to interval training.

Traditionally, a clinical trial protocol is built around a single event as its primary outcome, with several secondary outcomes specified, the analyses for which lack the same level of power. To accommodate all the relevant outcomes and to increase the power of the comparison in trials evaluating the efficacy of treatments for coronary heart disease, investigators often chose to construct a composite outcome.

Using the Everyday Problem Solving Inventory of Cornelius and Caspi, we examined differences in problem-solving strategy endorsement and effectiveness in two domains of everyday functioning (instrumental or interpersonal, and a mixture of the two domains) and for four strategies (avoidance-denial, passive dependence, planful problem solving, and cognitive analysis). Consistent with past research, our research showed that older adults were more problem focused than young adults in their approach to solving instrumental problems, whereas older adults selected more avoidant-denial strategies than young adults when solving interpersonal problems. Overall, older adults were also more effective than young adults when solving everyday problems, in particular for interpersonal problems.
