Background: Physiotherapy private practitioners represent a growing proportion of Australia's primary care workforce; however, they face significant barriers in integrating seamlessly within interprofessional teams. Historically, the landscape of primary care in Australia has been one where many physiotherapists work in monoprofessional private practice facilities at dispersed locations, potentially limiting collaborative and coordinated care. The aim of this study was to investigate strategies recommended by physiotherapists to promote effective interprofessional collaborative practice (IPCP) within the Australian private practice setting.

Effective interprofessional collaboration (IPC) contributes to superior patient outcomes, facilitates cost-efficient health care, and increases patient and practitioner satisfaction. However, there is concern that IPC may be difficult to implement in clinical settings that do not conform to formal team-based processes, such as mono-professional physiotherapy private practice facilities. The aim of this study was to describe the characteristics of private physiotherapy practitioners' interprofessional interactions, including their experiences and perceptions regarding IPC.

Background: One of the most common uses of the Internet is to search for health-related information. Although scientific evidence pertaining to cognitive health promotion has expanded rapidly in recent years, it is unclear how much of this information has been made available to Internet users. Thus, the purpose of our study was to assess the reliability and quality of information about cognitive health promotion encountered by typical Internet users.

Background: Chest physiotherapy techniques, such as percussion, postural drainage, and expiratory vibrations, may be employed in a critical care setting. Physiotherapists are primarily responsible for their provision; however, nurses have also traditionally implemented these treatments. It is unclear whether nurses consider chest physiotherapy to be a part of their role, or how they perceive their knowledge and confidence pertaining to these techniques.

Objectives: Exosomes are 50-90nm extracellular membrane particles that may mediate trans-cellular communication between cells and tissues. We have reported that human urinary exosomes contain miRNA that are biomarkers for salt sensitivity and inverse salt sensitivity of blood pressure. This study examines exosomal transfer between cultured human renal proximal tubule cells (RPTCs) and from RPTCs to human distal tubule and collecting duct cells.

Background And Aims: Effective use of alcohol duty to reduce consumption and harm depends partly on retailers passing duty increases on to consumers via price increases, also known as 'pass-through'. The aim of this analysis is to provide evidence of UK excise duty and sales tax (VAT) pass-through rates for alcohol products at different price points.

Setting: March 2008 to August 2011, United Kingdom.

This pilot study evaluated a research method for examining the efficacy of screen capture tutorials in teaching database search skills. This is not a results-oriented paper but rather describes the facets and testing of a mixed methods protocol. The lessons learned can be applied to a result-oriented study with a larger sample size and to the development of methods for similar studies.

Spontaneous rupture of utero-ovarian vessels in pregnancy is rare and usually involves utero-ovarian veins. Presenting symptoms include acute-onset abdominal pain and maternal hypovolemic shock secondary to haemoperitoneum. Although this condition had been documented over a century ago, an accurate diagnosis is rarely reached prior to laparotomy due to a multitude of other surgical and obstetrical presentations that may pose a similar clinical picture.

Aim: The primary objective was to analyse reported dispensing errors, and contributing factors, in Scottish National Health Service hospitals by coding and quantifying error reports from the DATIX patient-safety software. The secondary objective was to gather managerial responses to dispensing error in order to gain a perspective on interventions already in place.

Methods: Incident reports collected from 23 Scottish hospitals over a 5-year period were analysed retrospectively.

Scanning electron microscopy-based conductive mode (CM) microscopy, using the remote electron beam-induced current configuration, was carried out on a positive temperature coefficient of resistance thermistor at temperatures below and above the Curie temperature, T(C). Below T(C), when the thermistor is in a low resistance state, no strong CM contrast was observed. Above T(C) the thermistor grain boundaries become highly resistive and significant CM contrast formed owing to three mechanisms: all of the areas that were studied showed resistive contrast, but in addition some grain boundaries showed additional contrast due to electron beam-induced current, the origin of which was consistent with the presence of a back-to-back Schottky barrier structure at the grain boundary.

Objective: Occlusion of the omphalomesenteric artery in utero, leading to disruption of the umbilical ring with subsequent herniation of intestines, has been proposed as the mechanism by which gastroschisis occurs. We hypothesized that affected fetuses have a predisposition to arterial or venous thromboembolism.

Study Design: Thirty-one children born with gastroschisis were tested for Factor V Leiden, prothrombin, and methylene tetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) mutations.

Our objective was to evaluate the effect of a change in treatment protocols, suggested following an inspection visit by the regulatory authority, from single to double inseminations during donor insemination treatment cycles. We therefore conducted a retrospective audit of pregnancy rates in the reproductive medicine clinic of a major teaching hospital. All patients were treated for male factor infertility by donor insemination, without ovulation induction with gonadotrophins between October 1992 and December 1995.

Little is known about the ontogeny of cyclooxygenase activity and synthesis of prostaglandins in the developing gastrointestinal tract. We tested the hypothesis that an age-related increase in cyclooxygenase as reflected in production of PGE2 in the proximal small bowel (PSB) is associated with the maturation of the mucosal barrier as determined by 51Cr-EDTA permeability. Cyclooxygenase activity in PSB of rats at 10, 22, 36, and 63 (adult) days of age was determined by the generation of PGE2 using specific radioimmunoassay.
