Objective: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental condition characterized by social communication differences and restricted interests. One proposed biologic mechanism underlying ASD is oxidative stress, leading to the clinical use of glutathione based on anecdotal reports of improved behavior in autistic children. In this pilot study, we tested this observation using a randomized clinical trial format to collect preliminary data on glutathione safety and efficacy.

Determinants of Outcomes for Acute Myeloid Leukemia Patients Treated in a Community-Based Specialized Versus Non-Specialized Hospital Setting.

The treatment setting influences acute myeloid leukemia (AML) outcomes. Most cancer patients receive care in the community, yet few studies have evaluated the effectiveness of clinical programs outside of academic or National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated cancer centers. This was a multi-level, case-controlled study of real-world outcomes for initial AML treatment in a community-based network for 1,391 patients with AML between 2011 and 2018.

Manganese is an essential element but can be neurotoxic if overexposed. Our previous study found that a higher level of manganese in nail biomarkers from children living near coal ash storage sites was associated with poorer neurobehavioral function. Children living near this type of pollution may be exposed to other metal neurotoxicants and a better understanding of manganese in the context of multiple exposures is needed.

The embodiment of a prosthesis describes how effectively it replaces a missing limb and is an important aspect of patient care. Despite its importance, the current prosthetics literature lacks a formal definition of embodiment, and descriptions are often vague or incomplete.

One Drop Improves Productivity for Workers With Type 2 Diabetes: One Drop for Workers With Type 2 Diabetes.

Objective: Diabetes research on work productivity has been largely cross-sectional and retrospective, with only one known randomized controlled trial (RCT) published, to our knowledge. Secondary analysis of the Fit-One RCT tested the effect of One Drop's digital health program on workplace productivity outcomes, absenteeism, and presenteeism, for employees and specifically for older workers with type 2 diabetes.

Methods: Analysis of the 3-month Fit-One trial data from employees who have type 2 diabetes explored productivity using logistic analyses and generalized estimating equations.

Clinical outcomes of severe COVID-19 patients receiving early VV-ECMO and the impact of pre-ECMO ventilator use.

Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) in COVID-19 patients is associated with poor clinical outcomes and high mortality rates, despite the use of mechanical ventilation. Veno-Venous Extracorporeal membrane Oxygenation (VV-ECMO) in these patients is a viable salvage therapy. We describe clinical outcomes and survival rates in 52 COVID-19 patients with ARDS treated with early VV-ECMO at a large, high-volume center ECMO program.

Based on the risk for motor and attention problems, we evaluated neurobehavioral function in 255 children at risk for Mn exposure due to living in proximity to coal ash storage sites.

Recruitment strategies and challenges: Lessons learned from a coal ash and children's health study.

The purpose of this paper is to describe the approaches and recruitment strategies of a study focused on the impact of coal fly ash on neurobehavioral performance among children living in proximity to coal-burning power plants. Challenges encountered with each recruitment approach are highlighted as well as solutions used to overcome those challenges and ultimately enroll children and one of their parents or guardians. To ensure participants were distributed throughout the study area, geographical information systems were used to guide recruitment and achieve the target sample size (N = 300).
