Article Synopsis
  • - The case study highlights a new phenotypic presentation of maculopathy potentially linked to pentosan polysulfate sodium in a 55-year-old woman with interstitial cystitis who experienced vision changes after 10 years of treatment.
  • - Examination revealed retinal pigment epithelial hyperplasia and neurosensory retinal detachments that could easily be mistaken for other common eye conditions like age-related macular degeneration.
  • - Early diagnosis is critical; stopping the offending medication can prevent serious, irreversible damage to the retina and preserve vision.

Purpose: To describe a case of paracentral acute middle maculopathy (PAMM) after coronary angiography

Observations: A 65-year-old female patient exhibited a dense central scotoma 5 hrs after coronary angiography. She presented the next day to the retina clinic and received a complete visual examination including slit lamp biomicroscopy, dilated fundus examination, fluorescein angiogram (FA), spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) and OCT-Angiography (OCT-A). She was found to have the characteristic findings of PAMM including a hyperreflective band at the inner nuclear layer (INL) with extension into the inner plexiform layer (IPL) and outer plexiform layer (OPL) on imaging.

Objective In this study, we aimed to investigate whether zinc provided in Age-Related Eye Disease Study 2 (AREDS2) vitamins is associated with a decreased risk of contracting coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Materials and methods We conducted a retrospective observational cohort study involving patients at a retina-only practice who were provided a questionnaire at each visit to assess whether they were symptomatic of or had contracted COVID-19. Those who answered yes to testing positive for COVID-19 were retrospectively analyzed and categorized based on their AREDS2 vitamin use, and a Pearson's chi-squared test was performed.

Article Synopsis
  • An 82-year-old man lost a lot of his vision, going from 20/50 to 20/800, even though his eye treatment for macular degeneration seemed to be working.
  • Doctors did many tests and found that his eye condition wasn't getting worse, but they discovered a brain tumor that was actually from lung cancer.
  • This shows that if someone with macular degeneration loses their vision unexpectedly, doctors should look for other health issues that could be causing it.

Purpose: To assess vision, injection quantity, initial lesion size, and final anatomic status in patients with nAMD completing the treat-extend-stop (TES) protocol.

Methods: Patients with nAMD received ≥ 3 monthly anti-VEGF injections followed by 1-2 week injection interval extensions, with intra/subretinal fluid resolution on SD-OCT, to 12 weeks. With quiescent disease, and 2 quarterly injections, patients were monitored alone beginning at 4 weeks extending by 1-2 week intervals until quarterly monitoring.

Article Synopsis
  • This study aimed to identify elderly patients diagnosed with central serous chorioretinopathy (CSCR) that were initially misdiagnosed with neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD).
  • Eleven out of 522 patients met the criteria for CSCR, with an average age of 75.9 years and follow-up of nearly 17 months, showing some improvement in visual acuity after observation or treatment but no significant response to anti-VEGF therapy.
  • The findings suggest that CSCR can mimic nAMD in elderly patients, and careful monitoring is essential, as a percentage of patients showed varied changes in vision, with some ultimately developing complications like choroidal neovascular membranes.*

Significance: Although rare, vitamin A retinopathy should be considered by the clinicians in their differentials for conditions that can lead to nyctalopia, especially in those patients who have undergone bariatric surgery. Patients must be educated on this potential delayed adverse effect of the surgery and possible lifelong vitamin A supplementation.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to report a rare case of delayed vitamin A retinopathy that occurred because of vitamin A malabsorption secondary to bariatric surgery.
