Recent data suggest that 3,4-methylenedioxypyrovalerone (MDPV) has neurotoxic effects; however, the cognitive and neurochemical consequences of MDPV self-administration remain largely unexplored. Furthermore, despite the fact that drug preparations that contain MDPV often also contain caffeine, little is known regarding the toxic effects produced by the co-use of these two stimulants. The current study investigated the degree to which self-administered MDPV or a mixture of MDPV+caffeine can produce deficits in recognition memory and alter neurochemistry relative to prototypical stimulants.

Objectives: Quantifying area-level inequalities in population health can help to inform policy responses. We describe an approach for estimating quality-adjusted life expectancy (QALE), a comprehensive health expectancy measure, for local authorities (LAs) in Great Britain (GB). To identify potential factors accounting for LA-level QALE inequalities, we examined the association between inclusive economy indicators and QALE.

Background And Purpose: The use of "Bath Salts" drug preparations has been associated with high rates of toxicity and death. Preparations often contain mixtures of drugs including multiple synthetic cathinones or synthetic cathinones and caffeine; however, little is known about whether interactions among "Bath Salts" constituents contribute to the adverse effects often reported in users.

Experimental Approach: This study used adult male Sprague-Dawley rats to characterize the cardiovascular effects, locomotor effects, and pharmacokinetics of methylone, MDPV, and caffeine, administered alone and as binary mixtures.

Microbially induced calcium carbonate precipitation (MICP) has emerged as a novel technology with the potential to produce building materials through lower-temperature processes. The formation of calcium carbonate bridges in MICP allows the biocementation of aggregate particles to produce biobricks. Current approaches require several pulses of microbes and mineralization media to increase the quantity of calcium carbonate minerals and improve the strength of the material, thus leading to a reduction in sustainability.

Background: The UK Government's 'welfare reform' programme included reductions to social security payments, phased in over the financial years 2011/2012-2015/2016. Previous studies of social security cuts and health outcomes have been restricted to analysing single UK countries or single payment types (eg, housing benefit). We examined the association between all social security cuts fully implemented by 2016 and life expectancy, for local authorities in England, Scotland and Wales.

Introduction: Regular physical activity is important for positive health outcomes yet, most individuals do not meet physical activity guidelines. Recent studies show that one in five Canadians aged 15 or older have one or more disabilities, yet as a population, individuals with disabilities are 16%-62% less likely to meet physical activity guidelines. The COVID-19 pandemic created additional barriers to physical activity participation as lockdowns prevented in-person programming.

Background: Ample evidence supports fetoscopic laser photocoagulation of placental anastomoses as a first-line treatment for twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome, but little is known about the outcomes following procedures conducted in the early second trimester.

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate perinatal outcomes following early fetoscopic laser placental photocoagulation performed for twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome at 16 weeks' gestation.

Study Design: This retrospective review included monochorionic twin pregnancies complicated by twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome necessitating fetoscopic laser photocoagulation at a single tertiary center from 2012 to 2021.

Background: Mortality rates across the UK stopped improving in the early 2010s, largely attributable to UK Government's 'austerity' policies. Such policies are thought to disproportionately affect women in terms of greater financial impact and loss of services. The aim here was to investigate whether the mortality impact of austerity-in terms of when rates changed and the scale of excess deaths-has also been worse for women.

Article Synopsis
  • This study looked at how long people with type 1 diabetes in Scotland can expect to live and whether they live with or without health problems.
  • It found that people living in poorer areas typically live about 8 years less than those in wealthier areas, and they also spend fewer years without complications from diabetes.
  • The research used health records from almost 8,600 individuals over five years to understand these differences.

Synthetic cathinones, such as 3,4-methylenedioxypyrovalerone (MDPV), are recreational drugs of abuse often identified in 'bath salts' preparations. Humans report compulsive patterns of bath salts use, and previous work suggests that a subset of rats develop unusually high levels of MDPV self-administration. This study aims to test the hypothesis that high levels of impulsivity (e.

Background: The terminology and diagnostic criteria presently used by pathologists to report placenta accreta spectrum is inconsistent and does not reflect current knowledge of the pathogenesis of this disease.

Objective: In 2020, the perinatal subcommittee of the Society for Pediatric Pathology Placenta Accreta Task Force proposed a new pathologic grading system for placenta accreta spectrum. We sought to correlate the clinical outcomes with the classification into each group in the new placenta accreta spectrum grading system.

Relapse remains a major challenge to the treatment of cocaine addiction. Recent studies suggested that the trace amine-associated receptor 1 (TAAR1) could be a promising target to treat cocaine addiction and relapse; however, the underlying mechanism remains unclear. Here, we aimed to investigate the neural mechanism underlying the role of TAAR1 in the drug priming-induced reinstatement of cocaine-seeking behavior in rats, an animal model of cocaine relapse.

Background: Recent evidence suggesting that polysubstance use is the norm rather than the exception highlights the need for a better understanding of interactions amongst the abuse-related effects of commonly co-abused drugs. Synthetic cathinones remain one of the most popular families of novel psychoactive substances and are typically used in preparations containing multiple stimulants. Evaluating the reinforcing effects of drugs under both single-operant procedures and procedures in which alternatives are available can provide a more complete characterization of their reinforcing effects and economic interactions.

Unlabelled: Women have consistently lower mortality rates than men at all ages and with respect to most causes. However, gender differences regarding hospital admission rates are more mixed, varying across ages and causes. A number of intuitive metrics have previously been used to explore changes in hospital admissions over time, but have not explicitly quantified the gender gap or estimated the cumulative contribution from cause-specific admission rates.

Rationale: Trace amine-associated receptor 1 (TAAR1) is a G protein-coupled receptor that has a particular role in regulating dopaminergic, serotonergic, and glutamatergic transmission. TAAR1 agonists have shown pro-cognitive activities. However, it remains largely unknown of the effects of TAAR1 agonists on memory performance.

Recent estimates suggest increased popularity of the concurrent use of opioids and stimulants, with over 50% of treatment-seeking opioid users reporting regular stimulant use. The goal of the current study was to determine how opioid dependence and withdrawal affect the reinforcing effects of fentanyl, cocaine, and methamphetamine. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were allowed to self-administer fentanyl under a progressive ratio (PR) schedule of reinforcement.

The 3,4-methylenedioxypyrovalerone (MDPV), and other structurally related synthetic cathinones, are popular alternatives to prototypical illicit psychostimulants, such as cocaine and methamphetamine. These drugs are often referred to as 'bath salts' and function either as cocaine-like inhibitors of monoamine uptake, or amphetamine-like substrates for dopamine, norepinephrine and serotonin transporters. These studies used male Sprague-Dawley rats trained to discriminate MDPV from saline to evaluate the substitution profiles of structurally related synthetic cathinones, cocaine, and other direct-acting dopamine and noradrenergic receptor agonists in order to characterize the relative contributions of dopamine, norepinephrine and serotonin to the discriminative stimulus effects of MDPV.

Background And Purpose: Trace amine-associated TA receptors play critical roles in regulating dopamine transmission. Previous studies showed that pharmacologically or genetically manipulating the activity of TA receptors modulates addiction-like behaviours associated with psychostimulants. However, little is known about whether TA receptor modulation would regulate the behavioural effects of opioids.
