Potent antioxidative peptides were purified from Pacific cod (Gadus macrocephalus) skin gelatin using alcalase, neutrase, papain, trypsin, pepsin, and α-chymotrypsin. Among them, the papain hydrolysate exhibited the highest antioxidant activity. Therefore, it was further purified and obtained two peptides with amino acid sequences of Thr-Cys-Ser-Pro (388 Da) and Thr-Gly-Gly-Gly-Asn-Val (485.

The matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) family is involved in the breakdown of extracellular matrix in normal physiological processes, as well as in the disease processes such as arthritis and cancer metastasis. In the present study, dieckol was obtained with high yield from marine brown alga Ecklonia cava (EC), and its effect was assessed on the expression of MMP-2 and -9 and morphological changes in human fibrosarcoma cell line (HT1080). Dieckol inhibited the expression of MMP-2 and -9 in a dose-dependent manner and also suppressed the cell invasion and the cytomorphology in 3D culture system on HT1080 cells.

Herpes simplex virus (HSV) is a member of the Herpesviridae family that causes general communicable infections in human populations throughout the world, the most common being genital and orolabial disease. The current treatments for HSV infections are nucleoside analogs such as acyclovir, valacyclovir and famciclovir. Despite the safety and efficacy, extensive clinical use of these drugs has led to the emergence of resistant viral strains, mainly in immunocompromised patients.

In this study, COS of four different molecular weight ranges (<1, 1-3, 3-5 and 5-10 kDa) were investigated for their abilities to modulate inflammatory mediators in lipopolysaccharides (LPS)-stimulated BV2 microglia. At the concentration of 500 μg/ml, COS attenuate the productions of nitric oxide (NO) and prostaglandin E(2) (PGE(2)) by inhibiting inducible NO synthase (iNOS) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) expressions.

The chip provides a unique tool for hosting a wide-range of concentration gradient for studies that require an equal distribution of measuring points on a logarithmic scale. Using Matrix metalloproteinase IX and three of its inhibitors, marimastat, batimastat, and CP471474, we evaluated the IC(50) of each inhibitor with a single experiment.

Among marine organisms, marine algae have been identified as an under-exploited plant resource, although they have long been recognized as valuable sources of structurally diverse bioactive compounds. Presently, several lines of studies have provided insight into biological activities and neuroprotective effects of marine algae including antioxidant, anti-neuroinflammatory, cholinesterase inhibitory activity and the inhibition of neuronal death.

The obtained ceramic has been characterized by thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), powder x-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), field-emission scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive x-ray analysis, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), selected area diffraction analysis, cytotoxic analysis and cell proliferation analysis. The results indicate that there are significant differences between the ceramics and T.

A distinct concentration gradient of a substrate was generated for the determination of the kinetic parameters of two different enzymes using only 10 picoliter-scale droplets. With a single experiment on a chip, we obtained K(M) and k(cat) values of matrix metalloproteinase 2 (MMP-2) and matrix metalloproteinase 9 (MMP-9), and compared the catalytic competence of the two enzymes.

Both peptides showed a significant hydroxyl radical scavenging activity when tested by ESR technique. And also the peptides effectively suppressed the hydrogen peroxide induced ROS production and DNA damage in HDF cells.
