Article Synopsis
  • The study highlights that transthyretin amyloidosis cardiomyopathy (ATTR-CM) is often overlooked in patients with heart failure and an LVEF greater than 40%.
  • Out of 97 studied patients, 13.4% were diagnosed with ATTR-CM, primarily affecting older males, indicating a notable prevalence in this demographic.
  • Key features in ATTR-CM patients included higher rates of polyneuropathy and carpal tunnel syndrome, along with specific heart-related metrics like thicker heart walls and prolonged PR interval, suggesting clinicians should consider ATTR when male patients show these symptoms.

Colonoscopy has a limited field of view because it relies solely on a small camera attached to the end of the scope and a screen displayed on a monitor. Consequently, the quality and safety of diagnosis and treatment depend on the experience and skills of the gastroenterologist. When a novice attempts to insert the colonoscope during the procedure, excessive pressure can sometimes be applied to the colon wall.

  • Thromboembolic events (TEs) linked to left ventricular thrombus (LVT) are concerning, necessitating further exploration of their prevalence and risk factors.
  • A study analyzed 256 patients diagnosed with LVT from 2010-2021, finding a 9% TE occurrence, mostly within the first 3 months, and less frequent after 2 years, indicating a definition of chronic LVT.
  • A previous history of TE increased the risk of future events, while chronic LVT significantly reduced the risk, making the duration of LVT crucial in predicting future TEs.

  • The study investigated the effectiveness of nivolumab, an immunotherapy drug, used before and after surgery in patients with high-risk renal cell carcinoma compared to traditional surgery alone.
  • It was a randomized phase 3 trial involving 819 patients across multiple sites in the US and Canada, who were assigned to either the nivolumab plus surgery group or surgery only group.
  • The primary outcome measured was recurrence-free survival, with safety being assessed for all patients who started treatment, and the trial has been officially closed to new participants.

Background/aim: Various devices for non-invasive body shape correction are being developed along with the growth of the beauty industry. Radiofrequency (RF) can selectively reduce subcutaneous fat without causing skin damage. The efficacy of the procedure can be improved by applying RF to a large area simultaneously with multiple handpieces.

Mumps virus (MuV) causes an acute contagious human disease characterized by swelling of the parotid glands. Despite the near elimination of mumps in many countries, the disease has recurred, even in vaccinated populations, especially adolescents. Immunization effectivity of the genotype A vaccine strain Jeryl Lynn (JL) is declining as genotype A is no longer predominant; therefore, a new vaccine strain and booster vaccine are required.

Importance: Canine extraction of large carnivores can pose significant risk due to extensive tissue damage during aggressive bone reduction. This report highlights a rare instance in which the use of a piezoelectric surgical unit (PSU) for maxillary canine extraction in a large carnivore resulted in successful outcomes with minimal tissue damage.

Case Presentation: A 10-year-old male African lion presented with decreased appetite because of bilateral maxillary canine fractures.

Objective: To evaluate the dental abnormalities by visually assessing the labial and buccal photographs in dogs and cats and analyze their prevalence based on age and breed.

Animals: 1,096 client-owned dogs and 775 client-owned cats.

Methods: Data were collected from patients who visited 26 private veterinary clinics from January to December 2022.

Importance: Early diagnosis of canine pancreatitis is challenging due to non-specific clinical signs. Currently, abdominal ultrasonography and measurement of canine pancreatic lipase (cPL) have been employed for the diagnosis of pancreatitis.

Objective: Many qualitative and quantitative commercial cPL tests have been developed and used in veterinary clinics.

Tannic acid (TA) possesses a notable ability to adhere to proline-rich proteins that make up skin cells and the extracellular matrix (ECM) in the skin tissue. Drug carriers with this specific adhesion ability exhibit improved drug delivery efficiency on the skin. Taking advantage of this, this study presents skin-adhesive TA-conjugated lipid nanovesicles (TANVs) for enhanced transdermal antioxidant delivery.

Introduction: Tooth fracture is one of the most common traumatic maxillofacial injuries in dogs and cats. For fractures with pulp exposure occurring in functionally important teeth, the literature indicates that root canal treatment (RCT) is an effective therapy option that may be the remedy of choice before extraction. The most commonly reported fractures in the United States involve canine teeth; however, fractures of the maxillary fourth premolars are more common in Korea, where there are many small-and medium-sized dogs.

Background/aim: Dural reconstruction is a critical process after neurosurgical procedures. Improper dural repair leads to serious side-effects, such as cerebrospinal fluid leakage or infection. This is why it is important to properly repair the dura using a dural substitute, and research into dural substitutes is ongoing.

The toxicity and sublethal effects of three insecticides (spirotetramat, cyantraniliprole, and pymetrozine) on , a major agricultural pest, were investigated. The nymphal stage showed greater susceptibility than the adult stage to all the insecticides, with a difference of up to 8.9 times at the LC of spirotetramat.

A 5-year-old Miniature Dachshund was presented having an infrabony pocket on the palatal aspect of the right maxillary canine tooth. The bony defect had worsened despite previous closed root planing and administration of a perioceutic agent. A second surgery using an allogeneic cancellous bone augmentation with an enamel matrix derivative was performed in the infrabony defect following open root planing.

  • Viruses significantly impact agroecosystems by negatively affecting plant health, with a gap in understanding their diversity and interactions with specific plants.
  • This study used high-throughput sequencing techniques to analyze the viral community in chunkung (Cnidium officinale) plants, discovering 61 distinct viruses linked to them, with a focus on persistent viruses associated with dwarfism.
  • The research indicates that chunkung is a crucial reservoir for various plant viruses, highlighting a high co-infection rate in individual plants, necessitating further studies to understand how so many viruses can coexist.

  • - Patients who had no evidence of disease (NED) after surgery for metastatic renal cell carcinoma (mRCC) were studied to see if pazopanib, a cancer medication, could improve their disease-free survival (DFS) compared to a placebo.
  • - The trial included 129 patients, and after thorough analysis, it found no significant difference in 3-year DFS rates between the pazopanib group (27.4%) and placebo group (21.9%).
  • - Additionally, the overall survival rate was better for the placebo group (91.4%) compared to pazopanib (81.9%), raising concerns about the drug's effectiveness and quality of life for patients on it.

A putative new polerovirus, named "chrysanthemum virus D" (ChVD), was detected in a Chrysanthemum morifolium plant in South Korea. The virus was identified by high-throughput sequencing and confirmed by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction. The entire ChVD genome is composed of 5,963 nucleotides and contains seven open reading frames (ORF0-5 and ORF3a), which are arranged similarly to those of other poleroviruses.
