Article Synopsis
  • - Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is a serious complication of diabetes leading to kidney failure, and this study investigates the role of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) in its development using mouse models.
  • - The research found that while certain NET-related proteins were generally absent in diabetic mice models, they were present in those with inflammation, indicating a complex relationship between hyperglycemia and inflammation in kidney disease.
  • - Ultimately, the study concludes that NETs are only produced in cases of inflammation associated with high blood sugar, emphasizing the need for further exploration into their role in diabetic kidney disease.

  • Epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) contributes significantly to peritoneal fibrosis, but its connection with autophagy is not well understood.
  • This study investigates how autophagy interacts with TGF-β1-induced EMT in human peritoneal mesothelial cells, finding that TGF-β1 promotes oxidative stress and mitochondrial damage through NOX4 activation.
  • The research suggests that targeting autophagy and NOX4 could be potential therapeutic strategies to prevent peritoneal fibrosis in patients undergoing dialysis.

Article Synopsis
  • * 33 patients were analyzed, with 27 in the no radiation therapy group and 6 in the radiation therapy group, revealing significant differences in axillary lymph node uptake and lymphatic flow delay between the two groups.
  • * Despite some patients displaying normal lymphoscintigraphy, over 24% still developed lymphedema, indicating that sentinel lymph node dissection and radiation therapy can impact lymphatic flow and increase the risk of lymphedema, regardless of initial lymphoscintigraphy results.

In the present study, we investigated the effects of xanthine oxidase (XO) inhibition on cholesterol-induced renal dysfunction in chronic kidney disease (CKD) mice, and in low-density lipoprotein (LDL)-treated human kidney proximal tubule epithelial (HK-2) cells. ApoE knockout (KO) mice underwent uninephrectomy to induce CKD, and were fed a normal diet or high-cholesterol (HC) diet along with the XO inhibitor topiroxostat (1 mg/kg/day). HK-2 cells were treated with LDL (200 µg/mL) and topiroxostat (5 µM) or small interfering RNA against xanthine dehydrogenase (siXDH; 20 nM).

Acute traumatic central cord syndrome is commonly associated with major trauma such as falling and motor vehicle crash, but minor or nontraumatic causes are very rare in children. As a consequence, most physicians frequently overlook children presenting with complaints of arm weakness when history of any definite major trauma does not exist, especially in the emergency department. We present the case of a 7-year-old boy who was experiencing weakness in both arms after a standing high jump with tilting his head back in school.
