The Influence of Analgesic Wound Infiltration on Postoperative Pain and Inflammatory Cytokines in Open Colorectal Surgery: A Randomized Comparative Pilot Study.

Surgical wound analgesia has been analyzed in many studies, but few have focused on its relationship with inflammatory markers. As such, we aimed to determine the influence of analgesic surgical wound infiltration in open colorectal surgery on the seric levels of pro- and anti-inflammatory markers and the associated efficacy in postoperative pain control. Forty patients who underwent open colorectal surgery were prospectively randomized: group 0, epidural analgesia; group 1, intravenous analgesia (control), group 2, preincision and prelaparoraphy infiltration; and, group 3, prelaparoraphy infiltration.

Background: Superior mesenteric artery syndrome is a disease with a complex diagnosis, and it is associated with complications that make it even harder to identify. Currently, a frequent association with psychiatric disorders has been noted. Despite numerous case reports and case series, the variability of the disease has not allowed the development of protocols regarding diagnosis and management.

Difficulties in diagnosing anorectal melanoma: A case report and review of the literature.

Background: Anorectal melanoma is a tumour that is difficult to identify due to its rarity and variability of presentation. Insufficient data published in the literature do not allow for diagnostic and treatment guidelines to be established. Anorectal melanoma has the worst prognosis among mucosal melanomas and is frequently misdiagnosed by standard identification methods.

Low-Temperature Charging and Aging Mechanisms of Si/C Composite Anodes in Li-Ion Batteries: An Operando Neutron Scattering Study.

The addition of Si compounds to graphite anodes has become an attractive way of increasing the practical specific energies in Li-ion cells. Previous studies involving Si/C anodes lacked direct insight into the processes occurring in full cells during low-temperature operation. In this study, a powerful combination of operando neutron diffraction, electrochemical tests, and post-mortem analysis is used for the investigation of Li-ion cells.

An experimental protocol for colorectal liver metastases ablation by radiofrequency toward a standard procedure.

Background: Radiofrequency ablation (RF) is already a viable alternative to surgical resection for focal liver tumors treatment. The use of RF ablation in combination with surgery or chemotherapy and the large panel of RF tools need new experimental models to develop new opportunities for this kind of therapy.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the optimal RF parameters that will allow in situ colic cancer liver metastases destruction with minimal secondary effects.

Extension of Hepatic Resection Ameliorates Survival in Patients with Type IIIa or IIIb Klatskin Tumors Despite Surgical Complications.

Major hepatectomies for hilar cholangiocarcinoma (HC) are associated with high rates of morbidity and mortality. We aimed to evaluate how and if surgical complications related to extended hepatectomies for HC type III and IV according to Bismuth-Corlette classification influence patients long-term survival. The files of all patients with major hepatectomy for HC and postoperative complications were retrospectively reviewed.

Acute cellulitis as local reaction to orthopedic implant - case presentation.

Due to increasing number of arthroplasties and osteosynthesis, foreign body reaction to implants is a major problem for orthopedic surgeons, since it is considered to be responsible for severe complications impairing the outcome of the treatment and requiring multiple surgery. Different mechanisms have been described as being involved, and research is focused on finding biomaterials with increased biocompatibility in order to minimize these complications. The clinical aspect of this reaction is usually dominated by chronic pain, with mild functional deficits, and the diagnosis results from excluding other causes of chronic pain, such as infection, osteoarthritis, peripheral neuropathies or angiopaties.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate whether there is a correlation between peripheral blood expression of angiogenic transcriptional factors/receptors and colorectal cancer (CRC).

Methods: Eighty six blood samples collected from patients with CRC (N=42), adenomas and/or hyperplastic polyps(AP, N=30) and individuals without colon pathology (control group/CTR, N=14) were used for this study. Twelve transcription factors and receptors were assessed by qRT-PCR in a case-control study.

Biphasic synovial sarcoma in a 19-year-old pregnant woman: a case report.

Synovial sarcoma is a rare malignant tumor of mesenchymal multipotent cells. We hereby present a case of synovial sarcoma of the upper left thigh. A 19-year-old patient was referred to our clinic by another hospital in Bucharest, Romania, for a soft tissue mass in the left upper thigh.

Suppression of inherent ferromagnetism in Pr-doped CeO₂ nanocrystals.

Ce(1-x)Pr(x)O(2-δ) (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.4) nanocrystals were synthesized by self-propagating method and thoroughly characterized using X-ray diffraction, Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and magnetic measurements. Undoped CeO₂ nanocrystals exhibited intrinsic ferromagnetism at room temperature.

Emergency laparoscopy combined with radiofrequency ablation for hemostasis after percutaneous liver biopsy.

There are no data in the literature on the use of radiofrequency ablation (RFA) in emergency laparoscopy as a means of hemostasis after liver biopsy. In this case report we have described a case of a patient with Waldenstrom macroglobulinemia and hypervascularised hepatic tumor who developed severe hepatic bleeding after liver biopsy. Innovative, minimally invasive treatment consisted in a laparoscopic approach with introduction of RFA needle into the biopsy site, followed by immediate hemostasis with no complications.

Effects of the radiofrequency interference with modified titanium surgical clips on liver parenchyma--an in vivo experiment.

This study describes an experimental model of accessory renal allotransplantation in the big laboratory animal (pig). A total of 24 common-breed pigs were used. All allografts were transplanted in an accessory manner and revascularized at the level of the infrarenal abdominal aorta and inferior vena cava.

Assessement by laser Doppler of the peripheral tumour perfusion after radiofrequency ablation for colorectal liver mestasis--experimental study.

Colorectal cancer became one of the most frequent malignant conditions of the past two decades. Non-resecable liver metastases might be destroyed in situ by radiofrequency although the local recurrence is still very important. Laser-Doppler flowmetry has proved to be a simple technique for monitoring the microcirculation, hereby the tissue perfusion at the edge of the post radiofrequency necrosis.

The extrapulmonary tuberculosis (TB) includes all the sites excepting lung, its origin being in the hematogenous disseminating foci within the main infection. The case of a woman, aged 36, is presented suffering of second degree obesity and type II diabetes mellitus under diet. She was admitted in the Surgery Clinics I of Emergency "Floreasca" Hospital (October 21, 2008) for discontinuous pains, relatively strong in the left hypocondrium, vesperal fever, perspirations, symptoms being present for 5 months.

Potential-induced conformational changes in an alpha-CN-terthiophene thiolate film on GaAs(110).

Second harmonic generation (SHG) investigations on alpha-CN-terthiophene-thiolate-covered GaAs(110) electrodes in 1 N H2SO4 solution revealed significant changes in the rotational anisotropy of the SH response. The enhancement of the 1- and the 3-fold contributions around -250 mV suggests changes in the symmetry properties of the delocalized electron system due to an alteration of the adsorption geometry induced by the applied potentials. The analysis of the EIS data showed that in the potential region where the SH signal exhibits the more important changes the Mott-Schottky plot undergoes a pronounced shift to more negative potentials as a result of the charging of the surface states grouped about 1.

Surface states- and field-effects at p- and n-doped GaAs(111)A/solution interface.

We have investigated the behaviour of n- and p-doped GaAs(111)A electrodes in sulfuric acid solution by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and second harmonic generation (SHG) measurements. The potential dependence of the SHG response was found to be closely related to the changes in the surface state population, as revealed by analysis of the impedance data. The nature of the majority of carriers turned out to be a key factor in shaping the surface state- and field-effect on the second harmonic generation process.

Pancreatogastrostomy as a salvage procedure to treat severe postoperative pancreatic fistula after pancreatoduodenectomy.

Hypothesis: Postoperative pancreatic fistula (POPF) is one of the most severe surgical complications of pancreatoduodenectomy (PD) with pancreaticojejunostomy (PJ) reconstruction. Recently, POPF has been classified as grade A, B, or C. Relaparotomy is mandatory for POPF associated with sepsis or hemorrhage (grade C).

Surgical treatment of severe acute pancreatitis.

Surgical treatment of severe necrotizing pancreatitis (SNP) is still controversial, inadequate indications and timing of operations being associated with high rates of mortality and morbidity. The aim of the present study is to analyze the indications and results of surgery in patients with SNP. Between 1989 and 2005, necrosectomy followed by open packing drainage (OPD) was performed in 80 patients with SNP.

[Conservative management in blunt splenic trauma].

We reviewed for analysis the charts of two groups of adults patients with blunt splenic injuries issued from two University Hospital Centers; the group 1 (G1) of 22 patients and the group 2 (G2) of 20 patients. The results of actually therapeutic procedures concerning blunt splenic injuries and subsequently the effectiveness of non operative treatment were evaluated. Splenectomy was performed in G1 for 11 patients, instead of 19 patients in G2 (p = 0.
