Hybrid integration of injector and detector functions for microchip gas chromatography.

Hybrid microchips containing high aspect ratio gas chromatograph (GC) columns with an integrated on-chip split injection and a flame ionization detector were developed. Two different column configurations, spiral and serpentine, both 1 m long by 50 μm wide and 500 μm tall, were fabricated out of electrodeposited nickel. The hybrid chip allowed injection plugs on the order of 1-2 ms, which lowered the height equivalent to theoretical plates (HETP) and allowed a comparison of system level band broadening between the two column configurations.

Identification and localization of a protein immunologically related to Caltractin (Centrin) in the Myonemes and Membranelles of the Heterotrich ciliate Stentor coeruleus.

The contractile properties of the myonemes of Stentor are very similar to caltractin (centrin)-containing fibers of other organisms. We investigated whether the calcium-binding protein caltractin was present in Stentor by using three different antibodies to caltractin or caltractin-related proteins, in conjunction with immunofluorescence microscopy and protein blotting. Immunofluorescence demonstrated that a protein immunologically similar to caltractin is present in the myonemes and in the bases of the membranelles of Stentor.

Four studies extending the utility of the Schwartz Outcome Scale (SOS-10).

The Schwartz Outcome Scale (SOS-10; Blais et al., 1999) is a brief, cost free, and easy to administer assessment device designed to measure a broad domain of psychological health. The 4 studies using the SOS-10 reported here extend the initial reliability and validity studies beyond psychiatric patients in a hospital setting to examine (a) test-retest reliability in a college student population, (b) concurrent validity with college students using an indirect technique assessing maladjustment, (c) concurrent validity with college counseling center clients using a self-report measure of client distress, and (d) sensitivity to treatment changes with outpatient clients.
