Crystallization kinetics were used to develop a spherulite growth model, which can determine local crystalline distributions through an optimization algorithm. Kinetics were used to simulate spherulite homogeneous nucleation, growth, and heterogeneous nucleation in a domain discretized into voxels. From this, an overall crystallinity was found, and an algorithm was used to find crystallinities of individual spherulites based on volume.

Characterization of cardiovascular tissue geometry and mechanical properties of large animal models is essential when developing cardiovascular devices such as heart valve replacements. These datasets are especially critical when designing devices for pediatric patient populations, as there is often limited data for guidance. Here, we present a previously unavailable dataset capturing anatomical measurements and mechanical properties of juvenile Yorkshire (YO) and Yucatan (YU) porcine main pulmonary artery (PA) and pulmonary valve (PV) tissue regions that will inform pediatric heart valve design requirements for preclinical animal studies.

Medical meshes are used as structural reinforcement both in clinical surgery and tissue engineering. However, complex loading conditions often found in such applications result in a non-homogenous stress distribution, for which the uniform reinforcement provided by the meshes is not optimal. This study aims to design a textile reinforcement with a spatially heterogeneous, load-tailored fiber architecture.

Prosthetic heart valves deployed in the left heart (aortic and mitral) are subjected to harsh hemodynamical conditions. Most of the tissue engineered heart valves have been developed for the low pressure pulmonary position because of the difficulties in fabricating a mechanically strong valve, able to withstand the systemic circulation. This necessitates the use of reinforcing scaffolds, resulting in a tissue-engineered textile reinforced tubular aortic heart valve.
