An Exuberant Case of Ulceronodular-Rupioid (Malignant) Syphilis in an HIV Patient: A Proposal for New Diagnostic Criteria.

We report the case of a 28-year-old male with uncontrolled human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection who presented with extensive ulcerated lesions with dark lamellated crusting on his face, torso, and limbs. The patient had a rapid plasma reagin (RPR) titer of 1:512, indicative of syphilis. A skin biopsy revealed granulomata surrounded by lymphocytes, histiocytes, and plasma cells, with spirochetes visible on immunohistochemical staining.

Intimate partner violence is related to future alcohol use among a nationwide sample of LGBTQIA+ people: Results from The PRIDE Study.

Background: Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, aromantic and asexual (LGBTQIA+) communities in the United States experience higher rates of alcohol use than the general population. While experiencing intimate partner violence (IPV) is thought to lead to increased alcohol use in LGBTQIA+ people, little research has investigated the temporal relationship between IPV and alcohol use in this population.

Methods: Data from two annual questionnaires of The Population Research in Identity and Disparities for Equality Study (The PRIDE Study) longitudinal cohort (n=3,783) were included.

Violence Victimization and Depressive Symptoms Among a Sub-Sample of Sexual and Gender Minority Adults in a Population-Based South African Study.

Sexual and gender minority (SGM) adults in South Africa face high levels of violence and poor mental health outcomes. Interventions to prevent these negative health implications are hampered by a lack of representative data among this population. This study aims to quantify the associations between three forms of violent victimization and depressive symptoms in a sub-sample of SGM drawn from a population-based cross-sectional study in Gauteng, South Africa.

Familias con Orgullo: Study protocol for an efficacy study of a family-based intervention for Hispanic sexual minority youth.

This manuscript describes the rationale and design of a family-based, Hispanic sexual minority youth (HSMY) specific preventive intervention, Familias con Orgullo (Families with Pride). HSMY (N = 306) and their primary caregivers will be recruited in South Florida and be randomized to Familias con Orgullo or prevention as usual. The intervention will be delivered by trained study facilitators.

Health effects associated with exposure to intimate partner violence against women and childhood sexual abuse: a burden of proof study.

The health impacts of intimate partner violence against women and childhood sexual abuse are not fully understood. Here we conducted a systematic review by comprehensively searching seven electronic databases for literature on intimate partner violence-associated and childhood sexual abuse-associated health effects. Following the burden of proof methodology, we evaluated the evidence strength linking intimate partner violence and/or childhood sexual abuse to health outcomes supported by at least three studies.

An Uncommon Presentation of Erythrodermic Psoriasis in a Patient Without a History of Psoriasis.

Erythrodermic psoriasis is a rare and potentially fatal skin condition. We present the case of a 68-year-old woman, with no prior dermatologic history, who was treated with steroid injection for an insect bite one month prior to presentation and subsequently developed a diffuse erythematous rash. She presented to a military medical center in shock, with weeping, coalesced plaques covering the majority of her skin.

Squamoid Eccrine Ductal Carcinoma: An Aggressive Mimicker of Squamous Cell Carcinoma.

Squamoid eccrine ductal carcinoma (SEDC) is an uncommon cutaneous adnexal malignancy that has the potential for an aggressive clinical course. The authors present a case of SEDC that resulted in widespread metastases and death. The clinical, histological, and immunohistochemical features of SEDC and several entities on the differential diagnosis are reviewed.

Exfoliative Cheilitis as a Manifestation of Factitial Cheilitis.

Factitial cheilitis is a rare diagnosis of exclusion that occurs most frequently in young women with a history of anxiety disorders and recent psychosocial stressors. It presents as continuous keratinaceous build-up, crusting, and desquamation of the lips, consistent with exfoliative cheilitis. Affected areas can progress to superinfection with Staphylococcus aureus or Candida albicans.

A study was undertaken to test the effects of molybdenum (Mo) and phosphorus (P) amendments on biological nitrogen (N) fixation (BNF) by boreal forest moss-associated cyanobacteria. Feather moss (Pleurozium schreberi) samples were collected on five sites, on two dates and at different roadside distances (0-100m) corresponding to an assumed gradient of reactive N deposition. Potential BNF of Mo and P amended moss samples was measured using the acetylene reduction assay.

A 12-month-old boy presented with three months of asymptomatic hypopigmented flat-topped papules on the suprapubic skin and lower abdomen. Emollients and topical steroids offered no improvementand the patient was referred to the dermatology department. Shave biopsy revealed a papillated epidermis with scattered solitary mononuclearclear cells at all levels of the epidermis and an overlying basket weave orthokeratosis.

Predictive value of basal cell carcinoma biopsies with negative margins: A retrospective cohort study.

Background: Pathology reports of basal cell carcinoma (BCC) biopsies often contain comments of positive or negative margins, with only 1%-2% of the margin evaluated. The negative predictive value (NPV) of biopsy margin status on residual BCC is unknown.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the NPV of BCC biopsy margin status on the absence of residual BCC in the corresponding excision.

Bilateral lower extremity inflammatory lymphedema (BLEIL) is a recently described condition that presents with exquisite tenderness, erythema and edema of the lower leg, ankle and dorsal foot resembling an acute cellulitis. It was first reported in healthy, young adult military basic trainees with a normal body mass index during the first 72 hours of arrival to basic training. It occurs while standing at attention for many hours, and shows rapid resolution with elevation and rest.

Frozen section is a valuable tool that is often underutilized in the setting of in-patient dermatology. Traditionally, frozen section has been used in dermatology to diagnose toxic epidermal necrolysis, with some additional utility in staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome in the new born period. We report a newborn female with ruptured bullae on the face, chest, back and extremities with a clinical differential diagnosis that included staphylococcal scalded skin, bullous congenital ichthyosiform erythroderma/epidermolytic hyperkeratosis and epidermolysis bullosa.

Well-known side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and fatigue. To date, there have only been only two reported cases with skin manifestations as a side effect.

Re-examination of features to distinguish polyarteritis nodosa from superficial thrombophlebitis.

The correct identification of vessel type is crucial in distinguishing cutaneous polyarteritis nodosa from superficial thrombophlebitis. As the treatment and prognosis of these conditions are very different, correct diagnosis is critical, but they have overlapping clinical and histopathologic features, which can sometimes make the distinction difficult. Features commonly used to distinguish an artery from vein include vessel shape and diameter, the presence or absence of an internal elastic lamina, smooth muscle pattern, and the presence or absence of valves.
