Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the impact of dust from the Great Salt Lake on air quality and public health in the Salt Lake Valley, focusing on metal-laden dust compositions.
  • Dust samples were collected from 18 locations, revealing that the highest dust levels were near the lake, indicating significant local contributions to urban air quality issues.
  • The research uncovered concerning correlations between the presence of hazardous metals and socioeconomic factors, showing that wealthier areas had higher levels of certain metals, while poorer neighborhoods contained higher concentrations of others like lead and nickel.

The environmental impacts of shale-gas development on water resources, including methane migration to shallow groundwater, have been difficult to assess. Monitoring around gas wells is generally limited to domestic water-supply wells, which often are not situated along predominant groundwater flow paths. A new concept is tested here: combining stream hydrocarbon and noble-gas measurements with reach mass-balance modeling to estimate thermogenic methane concentrations and fluxes in groundwater discharging to streams and to constrain methane sources.
