The prognosis of patients with colorectal cancer (CRC) is assessed through conventional clinicopathological parameters, which are not always accurate. Members of the human kallikrein-related peptidases gene family represent potential cancer biomarkers. The aim of this study was to investigate the expression of human tissue kallikrein-related peptidase 10 (KLK10) by immunohistochemistry in CRC, to correlate this expression with various histopathological and clinical variables, and to evaluate its significance as a predictor of disease outcome.

Tumor microvascular density (MVD) has been shown to correlate with the aggressiveness of several cancers. With the introduction of targeted anti-angiogenic therapy, assessment of MVD has the potential not only as a prognostic but also as a therapeutic marker. The significance of tumor vascularity in clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) has been debated, with studies showing contradictory results.

Background: Kallikrein-related peptidase 5 (KLK5) is a secreted trypsin-like protease of the KLK family, encoded by the KLK5 gene. KLK5 has been found to cleave various extracellular matrix components, as well as to activate several other KLK proteases, triggering the stimulation of tissue microenvironment proteolytic cascades.

Material And Methods: KLK5 expression levels were quantified in 102 cancerous and benign breast tissue specimens, obtained by randomly chosen patients, using RT-qPCR assay.

Background: Kallikrein-related peptidases (KLKs) have been proposed as potential cancer biomarkers. Contradictions in literature led us to clarify the role of KLK5 as a breast cancer predictor, as well as its association with KLK7 expression.

Patients And Methods: Semi-quantitative RT-PCR detected KLKs 5 and 7 in 80 breast tissues, 74 neoplastic and 6 normal.

BCL2L12 is a recently identified gene belonging to the BCL2 family, members of which are implicated in hematologic malignancies, including chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). The aim of this study was to analyze the mRNA expression of the novel apoptosis-related gene BCL2L12 in patients with CLL and to examine its prognostic and predictive value and potential clinical application as a novel molecular biomarker for CLL. For this purpose, total RNA was isolated from peripheral blood of 65 CLL patients and 23 healthy donors.

Aim: To investigate the technical success and clinical complication rate of a cannulated pancreatic duct with guidewire for biliary access.

Methods: During a five-year study period, a total of 2843 patients were included in this retrospective analysis. Initial biliary cannulation method consisted of single-guidewire technique (SGT) for up to 5 attempts, followed by double-guidewire technique (DGT) when repeated unintentional pancreatic duct cannulation had taken place.

Kallikrein-related peptidases 7 and 11 (KLK7/KLK11) share a high degree of structural similarity with PSA (KLK3) and other KLKs. The aim of this study was to evaluate differences in KLK7/ KLK11 expression in paired cancer/benign prostate foci and to determine possible associations with clinicopathological parameters. Seventy archived paraffin-embedded tissue samples obtained from radical prostatectomy were stained for KLK7, KLK11, PSA and PSMA and expression was evaluated semiquantitatively.

Background: Recently accumulating evidences underline the central role of the kallikrein-related peptidases family (KLKs) in prostate cancer (PCa) development and progression. The KLK4 is a prostate highly expressed gene under the transcriptional control of androgens, encoding for the KLK4 extracellular serine protease. The aim of this study is to investigate the expression status of KLK4 in PCa patients in order to reveal its utility in PCa establishment and clinical management.

Kallikrein-related peptidases (KLKs) represent a serine protease family having 15 members. KLK10 is a secreted protease with a trypsin-like activity. The function of KLK10 is poorly understood, although it has been suggested that KLK10 may function as a tumor suppressor gene.

Methylation of arginine residues has been implicated in many cellular activities like mRNA splicing, transcription regulation, signal transduction and protein-protein interactions. Protein arginine methyltransferases are the enzymes responsible for this modification in living cells. The most commonly used methyltransferase in man is protein arginine methyltransferase 1 (PRMT1).

We synthesized, characterized and studied the anticancer properties of a new water-soluble peroxo niobium complex (K(3)[Nb(Asc)(O(2))(3)]·4H(2)O (Asc = ascorbate anion C(6)H(6)O(6)(2-))), as well as that of ascorbic acid, in human leukemic cells. The complex was synthesized and characterized by elemental, IR, Raman, thermogravimetric analysis, detailed NMR and mass spectra analysis. The cytotoxic activity of the complex on HL-60 and K562 human leukemia cell lines has been investigated by assessing vital cellular mechanisms, such as the metabolic activity (3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide; MTT) and the proliferation capacity (growth curves) of leukemia cells, as well as the structural integrity of cell membrane (trypan blue assay).
