Methoxylated polybrominated diphenyl ethers (MeO-BDEs) are a class of environmentally relevant halogenated natural products. The two most relevant isomers, 2'-MeO-BDE 68 and 6-MeO-BDE 47, were repeatedly detected at levels comparable with persistent organic pollutants in marine environmental and food samples. MeO-BDEs were suspected to be biosynthesized by bromoperoxidases through the merging of two bromophenol units, three of which (2,4-dibromophenol, 2,6-dibromophenol and 2,4,6-tribromophenol) are abundant in marine environments, followed by O-methylation to give MeO-BDEs.

As a social species, humans live in complexly bounded social groups. In order to navigate these networks, humans rely on a set of social-cognitive processes, including social working memory. Here, we designed a novel network memory task to study working memory for social versus non-social network information across 241 participants (18-65 years) in a tightly controlled, preregistered study.

Introduction: The association between cognitive functioning and mental health symptoms across the lifespan remains poorly understood. Understanding the directionality of the association between mental health and cognition is important as most gold-standard psychological therapies, such as cognitive-behaviour therapy, are cognitively demanding. Here, we examined the directionality of the association between cognitive and affective control with symptoms of depression and anxiety across the lifespan.

Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are ubiquitously present in food and environmental samples. Accompanied by similar compounds like halogenated natural products (HNPs), their regular monitoring in fish and their predators is an important task. While different procedures have been developed, the removal of the lipid matrix, mainly carried out by treatment with sulfuric acid or by gel permeation chromatography (GPC), is an indispensable step during sample preparation.

Article Synopsis
  • Bromochloro alkanes (BCAs) are newly identified flame retardants similar to other Persistent Organic Pollutants and have been found in environmental samples for the first time, yet no standard methods for their quantification exist.
  • This study involves the synthesis of 16 custom standards to explore quantification strategies for BCAs in indoor dust, achieving an average measurement accuracy of 81% and meeting EU accuracy criteria in 89% of cases during fortification trials.
  • Despite these advancements, applying the quantification method to actual dust samples showed a low correlation with the prototype standards, highlighting the need for more diverse mixture standards for reliable BCA quantification in environmental samples.

Increasing energy expenditure in brown adipose (BAT) tissue by cold-induced lipolysis is discussed as a potential strategy to counteract imbalanced lipid homeostasis caused through unhealthy lifestyle and cardiometabolic disease. Yet, it is largely unclear how liberated fatty acids (FA) are metabolized. We investigated the liver and BAT lipidome of mice housed for 1 week at thermoneutrality, 23 °C and 4 °C using quantitative mass spectrometry-based lipidomics.

People exhibit marked individual variation in their ability to exercise cognitive control in affectively charged situations. Affective control is typically assessed in laboratory settings by comparing performance in carefully constructed executive tasks performed in both affectively neutral and affectively charged contexts. There is some evidence that affective control undergoes significant improvement throughout adolescence, though it is unclear how adolescents deemed at risk of developing depression exercise affective control despite poor affective control being identified as a contributing factor to ongoing mental ill health in adulthood.

Purpose: The COVID-19 pandemic brought with it significant social, economic and health uncertainties. These were proposed to impact young people more compared to adults, leading adolescents to report more mental health problems during the pandemic. The current study examined whether differences in cognitive risk (tolerance of uncertainty) and protective (psychological flexibility) factors accounted for age-related differences in depression and anxiety.

Lipid composition is conserved within sub-cellular compartments to maintain cell function. Lipidomic analyses of liver, muscle, white and brown adipose tissue (BAT) mitochondria revealed substantial differences in their glycerophospholipid (GPL) and free cholesterol (FC) contents. The GPL to FC ratio was 50-fold higher in brown than white adipose tissue mitochondria.

Building and protecting soil organic carbon (SOC) are critical to agricultural productivity, soil health, and climate change mitigation. We aim to understand how mechanisms at the organo-mineral interfaces influence SOC persistence in three contrasting soils (Luvisol, Vertisol, and Calcisol) under long-term free air CO enrichment conditions. A continuous wheat-field pea-canola rotation was maintained.

Halogenated natural products (HNPs) are considered to be emerging contaminants whose environmental distribution and fate are only incompletely known. Therefore, several persistent and bioaccumulative HNP groups, together with man-made polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), were quantified in the blubber of nine sperm whales () stranded on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea in Italy. The naturally occurring polybrominated hexahydroxanthene derivatives (PBHDs; sum of TetraBHD and TriBHD) were the most prominent substance class with up to 77,000 ng/g blubber.

Scattering luminescent materials dispersed in liquid and solid matrices and luminescent powders are increasingly relevant for fundamental research and industry. Examples are luminescent nano- and microparticles and phosphors of different compositions in various matrices or incorporated into ceramics with applications in energy conversion, solid-state lighting, medical diagnostics, and security barcoding. The key parameter to characterize the performance of these materials is the photoluminescence/fluorescence quantum yield (Φ), i.

Background: Cognitive control problems have been implicated in the etiology and maintenance of mental health problems, including depression, in adults. Studies in adolescents have been more equivocal, with some showing changes in cognitive control in adolescents with mental health problems, whereas others fail to show an association. This study examines whether adolescent mental health is associated with control, the application of cognitive control in affective contexts, which shows more protracted development than cognitive control.

Social anxiety may disrupt the empathic process, and well-regulated empathy is critical for navigating the social world. Two studies aimed to further understand empathy in the context of social anxiety. Study 1 compared individuals with elevated or normative social anxiety on a measure assessing cognitive and affective empathy for positive and negative emotions conveyed by other people ("targets"), completed under social threat.

Cognitive models of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) highlight characteristics of trauma memories, such as disorganisation, as key mechanisms in the aetiology of the disorder. However, studies investigating trauma memory in youth have provided inconsistent findings. Research has highlighted that PTSD in youth may be accompanied by difficulties in neurocognitive functioning, potentially impacting ability to recall the trauma memory.

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) models highlight maladaptive attention as a maintaining factor of SAD, potentially negatively impacting how individuals with SAD engage with cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) content in a therapist's presence. Emotional working memory training (eWMT) has been shown to improve affective attentional control. This pilot study assessed the proposed methodology for a randomized controlled trial (RCT) to determine whether eWMT, by improving attentional control prior to internet-based CBT (iCBT), results in better CBT outcomes.

Common syntax and data semantics are core components of healthcare interoperability standards. However, interoperable data exchange processes are also needed to enable the integration of existing systems between organizations. While solutions for healthcare delivery processes are available and have been widely adopted, support for processes targeting bio-medical research is limited.

Auranofin, an FDA-approved drug for rheumatoid arthritis, has emerged as a promising antiparasitic medication in recent years. The gold(I) ion in auranofin is postulated to be responsible for its antiparasitic activity. Notably aurothiomalate and aurothioglucose also contain gold(I), and, like auranofin, they were previously used to treat rheumatoid arthritis.

Background: Superior labral anterior and posterior (SLAP) tears are a common finding in overhead athletes. The original classification system produced by Snyder in 1990 contained 4 types of SLAP tears and was later expanded to 10 types. The classification has been challenging because of inconsistencies between surgeons making diagnoses and treatments based on the diagnosis.

Article Synopsis
  • Theoretical perspectives in the affective sciences have increased in variety rather than converging due to differing beliefs about the nature and function of human emotions.
  • A teleological principle is proposed to create a unified approach by viewing human affective phenomena as algorithms that adapt to comfort or monitor these adaptations.
  • This framework aims to organize existing theories and inspire new research in the field, leading to a more integrated understanding of human affectivity through the concept of the Human Affectome.

  • Calcium (Ca) plays a dual role in soil by enhancing the stability of soil organic carbon (SOC) and facilitating microbial adhesion, which is important for colonizing plant and mineral surfaces.
  • Research shows that when calcium is added to soils with labeled leaf litter, it boosts the growth of hyphae-forming bacteria and improves the transformation of litter into microbial biomass by about 45%.
  • The study reveals that calcium not only aids in physical and chemical interactions but also significantly influences the biological processes that enhance SOC persistence.

Mental health problems in young people have been on the rise for over a decade, with that trend accelerating during the pandemic. This review proposes that the catalyst effect of the pandemic offers insights into a key driver of increases in youth depression and anxiety: greater uncertainty. Uncertainty about many aspects of everyday life, including social connections, education, job security and health, increased during the pandemic, and this coincided with increasing rates of depression and anxiety.
