The integrity and the surface charge distribution of native low density lipoprotein (LDL) are prerequisites of its binding to the LDL receptor. Oxidation is one of the most important physiological effects resulting in an altered structure and metabolism of LDL. To reveal forces responsible for maintaining the intact structure of LDL in the absence of cells we have determined the kinetics of lipid peroxidation, changes in electrophoretic mobilities and size distributions of LDL samples as a function of Cu++ induced oxidative modification in a cell-free system at two different (50 mM and 150 mM) ionic strengths by electrophoretic and dynamic light scattering.

Technique for stabilization of autogenous cancellous bone grafts in sinus lift procedures.

Densely packed autogenous cancellous bone was stabilized in a sinus lift procedure with cortical cancellous struts. These struts were placed above the cancellous bone and rigidly fixed to the buttress and anterior sinus wall with titanium screws. This technique enables the clinician to maintain and stabilize bone graft materials in sinus lift procedures.

In vitro purging of clonogenic leukaemic cells from human bone marrow by interferon-gamma-activated monocytes.

With a view to the immunologically mediated purging of autologous bone marrow transplants in acute myeloid leukaemia, the efficacy of cytotoxic monocytes to eradicate leukaemic cells has been studied using clonogenic assays. U937 cells were found to be sensitive to highly purified and interferon-gamma-activated human monocytes whereas HL60 cells were rather resistant as measured in an MTT-based cytotoxicity assay under liquid conditions. Flexion of a metal/ceramic fixed partial denture (FPD) framework under function can cause fracture of the porcelain or deterioration of the cement seal. This study evaluated the flexion under compressive load of a four-unit mandibular FPD replacing the second premolar and the first molar. Stimulation of DNA synthesis in murine lymphocytes by the drug swainsonine: immunomodulatory properties.

Swainsonine, an inhibitor of Golgi alpha-mannosidase II, has recently been shown to have potent antimetastatic activity in experimental metastasis assays. In the case of systemic administration, the possible mechanism of action is unknown; the results reported here indicate that it can be explained at least in part by swainsonine stimulation of lymphocyte proliferation. In the present experiments, the standard in vitro mitogenic stimulation assay was used to test the effect of swainsonine on spleen cells.

Teaching dental materials using the personalized system of instruction.

Tailoring instruction to the individual needs of students is one approach to ensuring that students with lower scholastic aptitudes obtain the skills and knowledge necessary to function successfully as professionals. This study determined the effects of the personalized system of instruction (PSI) on end-of-course achievement, aptitude-achievement relationships, long-term retention, and course attitudes. The PSI method of instruction was compared to a conventional lecture/laboratory approach for teaching a dental materials course to dental hygiene students.

The effect of superoxide dismutase on the radiosensitivity of bacterial spores at various oxygen concentrations.

Experiments were carried out to investigate the effect of extracellularly added SOD on the radiosensitivity of Bacillus megaterium spores. 120 micrograms/ml SOD had no effect on the radiosensitivity of Bacillus megaterium spores at different oxygen concentrations.
