Background: In the surgical treatment of Haglund syndrome, combining a flexor hallucis longus (FHL) tendon transfer with Achilles tendon may improve plantarflexion strength and reduce strain on the repaired Achilles tendon. However, there is limited research comparing complication rates between surgical approaches with or without concurrent FHL tendon transfer.

Methods: This was retrospective study of patients who underwent surgical management for Haglund syndrome between January 2015 and December 2023.

Background: Haglund deformity is characterized by an enlarged posterosuperior calcaneus, often with inflammation of the retrocalcaneal bursa and Achilles tendon. This study aims to determine if obesity is associated with an increased rate of complications after Haglund resection.

Methods: A retrospective review was conducted on patients who underwent surgical resection for Haglund deformity from January 2015 to December 2023 at a single academic center.

Background: Total talus replacement (TTR) implants are designed to replace the diseased talar anatomy, reduce pain, maintain ankle range of motion, and restore ankle function after conservative treatments have failed. Currently TTR implants are produced by 3D printing a patient-specific implant designed from the patient's preoperative anatomy. TTR surgery using patient-specific implants is a relatively new technique that remains understudied in the literature.

Background: Historically, ankle fractures have been treated with open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) procedures, which are considered safe and effective. Patient characteristics may contribute to postoperative difficulties thereby increasing risk of hospital readmission. The objective of this study was to determine the frequency of and reasons for 30-day readmission and postoperative complications following ORIF for ankle fractures.

Background: This retrospective cohort study compared short-term complication rates following total ankle arthroplasty (TAA), alone or with concomitant procedures. Secondary independent risk factors were also examined as they related to postoperative outcomes.

Methods: The American College of Surgeons (ACS) National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP) database was queried using () codes to identify patients who underwent TAA (27702) between 2010 to 2021.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on the surgical outcomes of custom 3D-printed total talus replacement (TTR) and combined total ankle total talus replacement (TATTR) in patients suffering from talus collapse and peri-talar arthritis, with a follow-up of around 22 months.
  • A total of 38 patients were examined, with findings indicating that 18.4% required secondary surgery, and 7.9% had their implants removed, while significant improvements were noted in talocalcaneal height and physical function post-surgery.
  • Overall, the results suggest that TTR and TATTR can significantly enhance foot and ankle alignment and patient activity levels, although initial pain relief diminished over time.

Hallux rigidus represents the arthritis affecting the first metatarsophalangeal joint. It often leads to limited dorsiflexion, affecting gait and causing pain. Moberg osteotomy involves a dorsal closing wedge osteotomy on the proximal phalanx performed for early stages of hallux rigidus.

As the number of primary total ankle replacements increases for treatment of end-stage ankle arthritis, failures are also expected to rise. Periprosthetic joint infection is among the causes of failures and has been reported to be as high as 5%. Diagnosis is usually made by a combination of clinical examination findings, imaging, laboratory, and microbiological workup.

Heme, an iron-containing prosthetic group found in many proteins, carries out diverse biological functions such as electron transfer, oxygen storage and enzymatic reactions. Hemin, the oxidised form of heme, is used to treat porphyria and also to activate heme-oxygenase (HO) which catalyses the rate-limiting step in heme degradation. Our group has previously demonstrated that hemin displays antitumor activity in breast cancer (BC).

Case: A 65-year-old man with severe left talar avascular necrosis, arthritis, and chronic lateral ankle instability underwent total ankle total talus replacement (TATTR) with lateral ligament reconstruction. Tibial component placement was performed using preoperative computed tomography navigation and patient-specific guides. A custom, total talus replacement to mate with the fixed-bearing tibial component was implanted.

The American Nurses Credentialing Center outcome-based continuing education model is a method of outcomes-driven professional development that is learner-driven. This model can be used to incorporate the Future of Nursing recommendations into a preceptor development program. The use of this competency-driven model can empower preceptors and nursing professional development practitioners as they work together to facilitate the acquisition of preceptor competencies though learning experiences and achievement of outcomes.

EVALI is an acute inflammatory disease in response to lung cell injury induced by electronic cigarettes and vaping devices (EV) frequently containing Vitamin E Acetate or tetrahydrocannabinol additives, in the context of risk factors such as microbial exposure. EVALI resembles a respiratory viral illness that may progress to acute respiratory failure and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) but can also affect extra pulmonary organs. Manifestations may be severe, leading to death or long-term morbidity and current treatments are largely supportive.

Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is a remarkably heterogeneous disease with around 50% mortality, a fact that has prompted researchers to try new approaches to improve patient survival. Hemoxygenase-1 (HO-1) is the rate-limiting step for heme degradation into carbon monoxide, free iron and biliverdin. We have previously reported that HO-1 protein is upregulated in human HNSCC samples and that it is localized in the cytoplasmic and nuclear compartments; additionally, we have demonstrated that HO-1 nuclear localization is associated with malignant progression.

The current study examined whether business owners would be found liable for an employee's illness from COVID-19 contracted at work. We varied whether there was a mask mandate at the time of the employee's exposure (Yes or No), how the employee was exposed (an unmasked customer, an unmasked owner who forgot her mask, or an unmasked owner who did not require masks in her store) and measured participants' political orientation. Participants ( = 257) read and listened to a trial transcript about an employee that contracted COVID-19 at her workplace and was suing her employer for compensation to cover hospital bills.
