We present a low-resource and robust optical implementation of the four-dimensional Grover coin, a four-port linear-optical scatterer that augments the low dimensionality of a regular beam-splitter. While prior realizations of the Grover coin required a potentially unstable ring cavity to be formed, this version of the scatterer does not exhibit any internal interference. When this Grover coin is placed in another system, it can be used for interferometry with a higher-dimensional set of optical field modes.

Article Synopsis
  • Pregnancy and childbirth lead to major changes in family dynamics, impacting both relationship quality and maternal wellbeing, which can contribute to maternal depression.
  • This study uniquely assessed partnership quality and depressive symptoms from the second trimester of pregnancy through six months postpartum using longitudinal methods.
  • Findings showed a significant decline in relationship quality during the transition to parenthood, particularly in tenderness, and while there is a strong link between relationship quality and maternal depression, the direction of causation is unclear; highlighting the need for early intervention programs.

The conquest of land posed severe problems to plants which they had to cope with by adapting biosynthetic capacities. Adaptations to respond to UV irradiation, water loss, pathogen and herbivore defense, and the earth's pull were essential. Chemical compounds alleviating these problems can be synthesized by the phenylpropanoid pathway, the core of which are three enzymes: phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL), cinnamic acid 4-hydroxylase, and 4-coumaric acid coenzyme A-ligase (4CL).

Loneliness, influenced by genetic and environmental factors such as childhood maltreatment, is one aspect of interpersonal dysfunction in Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). Numerous studies link loneliness and BPD and twin studies indicate a genetic contribution to this association. The aim of our study was to investigate whether genetic predisposition for loneliness and BPD risk overlap and whether genetic risk for loneliness contributes to higher loneliness reported by BPD patients, using genome-wide genotype data.

Background: Maternal symptoms of anxiety and depression are highly prevalent during pregnancy and postpartum and have the potential to impact fetal development and offspring behavior. However, research on the effects of fetal exposure to maternal subclinical affective symptoms on infant self-regulation is still lacking. Self-regulation provides a fundamental precondition for healthy development and overall life success whereas dysfunctional self-regulation can lead to behavioral problems, poor academic achievement, social rejection, and physical/mental disorders.

Perinatal depression (PND) is a frequently observed mental disorder, showing a prevalence of up to 20% and resulting in unfavorable maternal and neonatal outcomes. Targeted screening for PND offers the potential to identify and treat undiagnosed cases and help prevent its deleterious consequences. The aim of the present study was to evaluate participants' personal attitudes and acceptance of a routine screening program for PND in pregnancy care, identify any potential underlying factors, and appraise the general perspective on perinatal mental health problems.

Background: Postpartum depression (PPD) is a severe mental disorder that often results in poor maternal-infant attachment and negatively impacts infant development. Universal screening has recently been recommended to identify women at risk, but the optimal screening time during pregnancy has not been defined so far. Thus, web-based technologies with widespread use among women of childbearing age create new opportunities to detect pregnancies with a high risk for adverse mental health outcomes at an early stage.

Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) is a clonal histiocytic disorder with recurrent mutations of BRAF and MAP2K1, but data on the impact of genetic features on progression and long-term sequelae are sparse. Cases of pediatric LCH with long-term follow-up from our institution were analyzed for mutations in BRAF and MAP2K1 exons 2 and 3 by immunostaining with mutation-specific VE1 antibody, as well as allele-specific PCR and sequencing, respectively. Clinical and follow-up data were obtained from our files and a questionnaire sent to all former patients.

Transplantation of peripheral blood stem cells (PBSC) from matched unrelated donors (MUD) is still associated with a significant risk for graft vs. host disease (GvHD), especially in pediatric patients receiving grafts from adult donors containing high amounts of T cells. Here, we present long-term follow-up results on 25 pediatric patients, (acute leukemia n = 15, NHL n = 3, CML n = 3, MDS n = 5), transplanted with CD34 or CD133 positively selected PBSC from MUDs supplemented with an add-back of 1 × 10/kg body weight (kgBW) unselected T cells resulting in a median T-cell depletion (TCD) of 1.

Pediatric patients with refractory or relapsed metastatic neuroblastoma (NBL) have a poor prognosis despite autologous stem cell transplantation (SCT). Allogeneic SCT from a haploidentical donor has a remarkable alloreactive effect in patients with leukemia; thus, we evaluated this approach in children with very high-risk NBL. We analyzed data from 2 prospective phase I/II trials.

Poor graft function (PGF) is a severe complication of haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) and administration of donor stem cell boosts (SCBs) represents a therapeutic option. We report 50 paediatric patients with PGF who received 61 boosts with CD34 selected peripheral blood stem cells (PBSC) after transplantation from matched unrelated (n = 25) or mismatched related (n = 25) donors. Within 8 weeks, a significant increase in median neutrophil counts (0·6 vs.

Invasive fungal infections are one of the major complications in pediatric patients during prolonged neutropenia after chemotherapy. Evaluation of the efficacy and safety of the triazole posaconazole in these patients is missing. This multicenter survey analyzed trough concentrations of 33 pediatric patients with a median age of 8 years during 108 neutropenic episodes who received prophylactic posaconazole oral suspension.

Prognosis of primary refractory and relapsed pediatric B-lineage acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is very poor. Relapse rates significantly correlate with persistent minimal residual disease (MRD). In MRD, favorable effector-target ratios prevail and thus this situation might be optimally suited for immunotherapy with antibodies recruiting immunological effector cells.

Graft failure is a life-threatening complication after allogeneic haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). We report a cohort of 19 consecutive patients (median age: 8·5 years) with acute leukaemias (n = 14) and non-malignant diseases (n = 5) who experienced graft failure after previous HSCT from matched (n = 3) or haploidentical donors (n = 16) between 2003 and 2012. After total nodal irradiation (TNI)-based reconditioning combined with fludarabine, thiotepa and anti-T cell serotherapy, all patients received T cell-depleted peripheral blood stem cell grafts from a second, haploidentical donor.
