Objective: Cardiac surgery is known to have high rates of perioperative red blood cell (RBC) transfusions which are associated with increased postoperative mortality and morbidity. Perioperative erythropoietin (EPO) has been suggested to lower perioperative RBC transfusions, and the effect on postoperative morbidity or mortality is unknown.

Methods: The registered study protocol is available on PROSPERO (CRD42022314538).

Background:  Minimally invasive aortic valve replacement (MiAVR) is an established technique for surgical aortic valve replacement (AVR). Although MiAVR was first described in 1993 and has shown good results compared with full sternotomy AVR (FSAVR) only a minority of patients undergo MiAVR. We recently started using MiAVR via an upper hemisternotomy.

Unlabelled: Multisystemic inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) is a rare, severe, post-infectious hyperinflammatory condition that occurs after COVID-19 infection. In this study, we aimed to demonstrate the risk reduction of MIS-C and severe MIS-C after Pfizer-BioNTech BNT162b2 mRNA COVID-19 vaccination. This nationwide cohort study included 526,685 PCR-confirmed COVID-19 cases (age < 19 years), of whom 14,118 were fully vaccinated prior to COVID-19 infection.

Article Synopsis
  • Drug-associated bullous pemphigoid can occur in patients with type 2 diabetes who use gliptins (dipeptidyl-peptidase 4 inhibitors) long-term, prompting a study to identify risk factors.
  • The research compared 76 patients who developed bullous pemphigoid after gliptin treatment to 8,060 who did not, and found a significant association with Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, and the concurrent use of thiazide or loop diuretics.
  • It concluded that gliptins should be used carefully in diabetic patients with dementia and those on diuretics, recommending sitagliptin over linagliptin and vildagliptin to reduce risk.

Background: Ethnic minorities may face disparities in access to health care and clinical outcomes. Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) has an established role in treatment of patients with severe symptomatic aortic stenosis, however outcome of these procedures among different demographics within the multi-ethnic Israeli society is unknown. We sought to compare mortality following TAVR between Jewish and Arab patients in Israel.

This study aimed to investigate differences in pediatric healthcare utilization in Israel over 10 years by examining differences across populations defined by living environment and ethnicity. Data was obtained from the Clalit Health Care data warehouse, covering over 250,000 children residing in Haifa and Western Galilee districts. The population groups were categorized based on ethnicity (Jewish vs Arab) and residential settings (urban vs rural).

Background:  We assessed whether implementation of an immediate preoperative treatment in anemic patients could result in fewer perioperative packed red blood cell (PRBC) transfusions and improved outcomes in a real-world setting.

Methods:  From January 1, 2020, to November 31, 2022, we implemented a perioperative protocol for anemic patients (hemoglobin (Hb) level in women <11.5 g/dL, men <12.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focused on the presence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, specifically carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae, in water environments within hospitals.
  • Findings revealed that 41.5% of water samples taken within 1 meter of sources like showers and sinks tested positive for these bacteria.
  • Notably, 20.6% of the positive samples were linked directly to water from showers.

Background: Possible sex differences in hepatitis A virus (HAV) incidence rates in different age groups are not well documented. We aimed to obtain stable pooled estimates of such differences based on data from a number of high-income countries.

Methods: We obtained data on incident cases of HAV by sex and age group over a period of 6-25 years from nine countries: Australia, Canada, Czech Republic, Finland, Germany, Israel, Netherland, New Zealand and Spain.

Background: Severe anaphylactic reactions to home doses may occur during food allergy oral immunotherapy (OIT).

Objective: To study the rate and risk factors for such reactions.

Methods: We studied all patients aged greater than 3.

Introduction: Nonionizing radiation (NIR) is considered "possibly carcinogenic to humans," and therefore, exposure of young military personnel raises concerns regarding increased risk for cancer. The aim of our study was to compare the cancer incidence in exposed and nonexposed populations in order to gain better understanding of their risk.

Materials And Methods: A longitudinal retrospective cohort study, between 2009 and 2018, was conducted.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study examines gender differences in tuberculosis incidence rates across different age groups and countries, highlighting inconsistencies in data over time.
  • - Using data from seven countries, researchers calculated male-to-female incidence rate ratios (IRRs) for various age categories and found that men had significantly higher rates in older age groups.
  • - The findings revealed that while boys under one year old had higher rates, boys aged 1-9 showed no significant difference, and a slight excess was noted in females aged 10-14, emphasizing the need to consider gender as a biological factor in tuberculosis risk assessments.

Background: Home reactions requiring epinephrine administration, a marker of their severity, restrict the widespread use of oral immunotherapy (OIT), but their risk factors are largely not known.

Objective: To identify risk factors for such reactions during OIT to most allergenic foods.

Methods: All patients who began OIT for peanut, tree nuts, sesame, or egg allergy at the Shamir Medical Center between April 2010 and January 2020 were enrolled.

Background: Deficiencies in Mismatch Repair (MMR) proteins are one of the major pathways in the development of colorectal cancer (CRC). MMR status evaluation is recommended in every new CRC patient. However, this is not fully implemented due to high costs.

Background: The functional lumen imaging probe (Endoflip™) is increasingly used for evaluation of patients with esophageal symptoms. To improve the interpretation of Endoflip™ in clinical practice, normative values with appropriate cut-off values are required.

Methods: Original clinical studies describing Endoflip™ use for measurements of esophageal motility in healthy adults were considered.

"Do what you do best" conveys an intuition about the association between ability and preference. In the field of emotion regulation, ability and preference are manifested in two central stages, namely, implementation and selection of regulatory strategies, which to date have been mainly studied separately. Accordingly, the present proof-of-concept study wished to provide preliminary evidence for an association between neural indices of implementation ability and behavioral selection preferences.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study examines gender differences in measles incidence rates across various countries and age groups over 11-27 years, revealing that males generally have higher rates of infection up to age 44.
  • - Male to female incidence rate ratios (IRRs) were calculated and meta-analytic methods were used to combine data, showing that excess measles rates in young males remain consistent, while women aged 45-64 show higher incidence.
  • - The findings suggest that biological and physiological factors contribute to the higher infection rates in younger males, while differential exposure may influence older age groups, highlighting the potential for improved understanding of infection mechanisms and vaccination strategies.

Objectives: We sought to assess the effectiveness of oral vancomycin compared to metronidazole on recurrence and mortality among hospitalized patients with non-severe Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI).

Methods: A single center retrospective cohort study was conducted, including adult patients hospitalized between 2015 and 2020 with a first episode of non-severe CDI, treated with metronidazole or vancomycin as monotherapy for at least 10 days. We assessed recurrence of CDI requiring hospitalization (primary outcome) and all-cause mortality up to 8 weeks, post discharge.
