Although solvated electrons are a perennial subject of interest, relatively little attention has been paid to the way they behave in aqueous electrolytes. Experimentally, it is known that the hydrated electron's () absorption spectrum shifts to the blue in the presence of salts, and the magnitude of the shift depends on the ion concentration and the identities of both the cation and anion. Does the blue-shift result from some type of dielectric effect from the bulk electrolyte, or are there specific interactions between the hydrated electron and ions in solution? Previous work has suggested that forms contact pairs with aqueous ions such as Na, leading to the question of what controls the stability of such contact pairs and their possible connection to the observed spectroscopy.

Proximity to freshwater blue space and type 2 diabetes onset: the importance of historical and economic context.

Salutogenic effects of living near aquatic areas (blue space) remain underexplored, particularly in non-coastal and non-urban areas. We evaluated associations of residential proximity to inland freshwater blue space with new onset type 2 diabetes (T2D) in central and northeast Pennsylvania, USA, using medical records to conduct a nested case-control study. T2D cases (n=15,888) were identified from diabetes diagnoses, medication orders, and laboratory test results and frequency-matched on age, sex, and encounter year to diabetes-free controls (n=79,435).

Background There are limited data on the lifetime risk of heart failure (HF) in people with type 2 diabetes and how incidence has changed over time. We estimated the cumulative incidence and incidence rates of HF among Danish adults with type 2 diabetes between 1995 and 2018 using nationwide data. Lessons Learned from Infants with Late Detection of Critical Congenital Heart Disease.

Late detection of critical congenital heart disease (CCHD) is multifactorial and ill defined. We investigated the results of pulse oximetry screening (POS) and points in the care chain that contribute to delayed detection of CCHD. The medical records of 13 infants with delayed detection at a single pediatric cardiac center between 2013 and 2016 were identified and reviewed.

Personalization of Treatment for Patients with Childhood-Abuse-Related Posttraumatic Stress Disorder.

Background: Differences in effectiveness among treatments for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are typically small. Given the variation between patients in treatment response, personalization offers a new way to improve treatment outcomes. The aim of this study was to identify predictors of psychotherapy outcome in PTSD and to combine these into a personalized advantage index (PAI).

Lactate Clearance Is Associated With Improved Survival in Cardiogenic Shock: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Prognostic Factor Studies.

Objective: Elevated blood lactate levels are strongly associated with mortality in patients with cardiogenic shock. Recent evidence suggests that the degree and rate at which blood lactate levels decrease after the initiation of treatment may be equally important in patient prognosis. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the usefulness of lactate clearance as a prognostic factor in cardiogenic shock.

Right Ventricular Dysfunction Is Common and Identifies Patients at Risk of Dying in Cardiogenic Shock.

Background: Understanding the prognostic impact of right ventricular dysfunction (RVD) in cardiogenic shock (CS) is a key step toward rational diagnostic and treatment algorithms and improved outcomes. Using a large multicenter registry, we assessed (1) the association between hemodynamic markers of RVD and in-hospital mortality, (2) the predictive value of invasive hemodynamic assessment incorporating RV evaluation, and (3) the impact of RVD severity on survival in CS.

Long-Term Mortality Associated With Use of Carvedilol Versus Metoprolol in Heart Failure Patients With and Without Type 2 Diabetes: A Danish Nationwide Cohort Study.

Background Carvedilol may have favorable glycemic properties compared with metoprolol, but it is unknown if carvedilol has mortality benefit over metoprolol in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D) and heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF). Methods and Results Using Danish nationwide databases between 2010 and 2018, we followed patients with new-onset HFrEF treated with either carvedilol or metoprolol for all-cause mortality until the end of 2018. Follow-up started 120 days after initial HFrEF diagnosis to allow initiation of guideline-directed medical therapy.

Objective: To evaluate the odds of a behavioral health diagnosis among youth with differences of sex development (DSD) or congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) compared with matched controls in the PEDSnet database.

Study Design: All youth with a diagnosis of DSD (n = 1216) or CAH (n = 1647) and at least 1 outpatient encounter were extracted from the PEDSnet database and propensity-score matched on 8 variables (1:4) with controls (n = 4864 and 6588, respectively) using multivariable logistic regression. Excess electrons in liquid acetonitrile are of particular interest because they exist in two different forms in equilibrium: they can be present as traditional solvated electrons in a cavity, and they can form some type of solvated molecular anion. Studies of small acetonitrile cluster anions in the gas phase show two isomers with distinct vertical detachment energies, and it is tempting to presume that the two gas-phase cluster anion isomers are precursors of the two excess electron species present in bulk solution. In this paper, we perform DFT-based molecular dynamics simulations of acetonitrile cluster anions to understand the electronic species that are present and why they have different binding energies.

The Upper Cibolo Creek (UCC) karst watershed in Central Texas, USA, represents a portion of the drainage area that supplies water to the recharge zone for the Edwards Aquifer. However, the surface water-groundwater interactions along the UCC are not well quantified, and the hydraulic interactions are important for water budget and water quality of the aquifer. In this study, we investigated the evolution of hydrochemical and isotopic signatures (O, H and -excess) from precipitation, surface water to groundwater in the UCC watershed from 2017 to 2019, and investigated surface water-groundwater interactions using samples from 14 creeks/spring sites.
