  • The deep inferior epigastric perforator (DIEP) flap is the standard method for breast reconstruction, but it can lead to complications like herniation and is time-consuming due to muscle dissection.
  • The superficial circumflex iliac artery perforator flap has limited use in breast reconstructions compared to DIEP and SIEAflaps.
  • A new technique called the superficial circumflex iliac artery superficial branch perforator (SCISP) flap offers a safer alternative by avoiding incision of the rectus fascia and successfully reconstructing breasts in patients with small to medium sizes.

Article Synopsis
  • Abdominoplasty, a popular aesthetic procedure, has a higher risk of complications, particularly postoperative nausea and vomiting, which can lead to significant issues such as reopening of ligated vessels and increased intraabdominal pressure.
  • A study analyzed data from 189 patients who underwent abdominoplasty from 2017 to 2019, comparing those who experienced vomiting after surgery to those who did not, focusing on the development of postoperative hematoma.
  • Results showed that 62.5% of patients with vomiting developed a hematoma, compared to only 9.25% of those without vomiting, highlighting that postoperative vomiting significantly increases the hematoma risk in abdominoplasty patients.

Manual separation of egg yolk from egg white using the eggshell is common practice in private households. For this, the egg is cracked and both components are separated by passing the egg yolk back and forth between the two halves of the eggshell, allowing the egg white to drip down while the egg yolk remains in the shell. During this process, the egg content naturally gets in contact with the outside of the eggshell, which might lead to a cross-contamination with its microorganisms, thus was correspondingly assessed in this study.

Background: The deep circumflex iliac artery (DCIA) perforator flap is an established method to reconstruct osteocutaneous defects. However, the cutaneous perforators come with a great anatomic variability. To deal with this problem, we used a sequential chimeric osteocutaneous free flap for reconstruction.

Growth of meat microbiota usually results in spoilage of meat that can be perceived by consumers due to sensory changes. However, a high bacterial load does not necessarily result in sensory deviation of meat; nevertheless, this meat is considered unfit for human consumption. Therefore, the aims of this study were to investigate changes in the microbiota from fresh to spoiled meat and whether the proportions of certain bacteria can probably be used to indicate the hygiene status of meat.

The reconstruction of complex dorsal hand injuries can be challenging. For coverage of dorsal hand defects, thin flap tissue is preferred. In addition, it is ideal to raise flaps with minimal donor-site morbidity and a discrete scar.

Soft-tissue defects of the lateral heel remain a challenge for reconstructive surgeons. Although a reliable vascular supply for free flap anastomosis is available anteriorly from the anterior tibial vessels and medially from the posterior tibial vessels, the vascular anatomy of the lateral side lacks suitable donor vessels for free flap anastomoses. Although the pedicle can be passed either ventrally beneath the skin or dorsally between the Achilles tendon and calcaneus, these passages are hardly applicable for lateral heel defects.

Background: Diarrhea in newborn calves is considered life-threatening and results in large economic losses in dairy farms. Lactobacilli generally play an important role in intestinal health, and (; ) is the dominant species in the feces of healthy calves during the first week of life. In calves with diarrhea on day 2 postpartum, lactobacilli are significantly reduced even up to 24 h before the onset of clinical signs.

Background: The transverse myocutaneous gracilis (TMG) flap is a viable and safe option for breast reconstruction in patients with limited abdominal tissue or other contraindications for abdominal-based flaps. Although it is one of the most common flaps employed for breast reconstruction, data on patient-reported outcomes is limited.

Objectives: The authors seek to evaluate patient satisfaction and aesthetic outcome after breast reconstruction with the TMG flap.

Background: Continuous processing with enzyme reuse is a well-known engineering strategy to enhance the efficiency of biocatalytic transformations for chemical synthesis. In one-pot multistep reactions, continuous processing offers the additional benefit of ensuring constant product quality via control of the product composition. Bottom-up production of cello-oligosaccharides (COS) involves multistep iterative β-1,4-glycosylation of glucose from sucrose catalyzed by sucrose phosphorylase from Bifidobacterium adeloscentis (BaScP), cellobiose phosphorylase from Cellulomonas uda (CuCbP) and cellodextrin phosphorylase from Clostridium cellulosi (CcCdP).

Assuring the safety of muscle foods and seafood is based on prerequisites and specific measures targeted against defined hazards. This concept is augmented by 'interventions', which are chemical or physical treatments, not genuinely part of the production process, but rather implemented in the framework of a safety assurance system. The present paper focuses on 'Cold Atmospheric pressure Plasma' (CAP) as an emerging non-thermal intervention for microbial decontamination.

Vacuum packaging and storage conditions at chilled temperatures are commonly used in order to prolong the shelf life of meat. Under these conditions and time-temperature abuse, cold-tolerant (facultatively) anaerobic spoilage microorganisms can continue growing. This study investigated growth of six relevant spoilage microorganisms in vacuum-packed beef (n = 12, 72 subsamples, stored at 10 °C for 28 days) using culture and qPCR methods.

Raw meat-based diets (RMBDs) are widely used as unconventional diets for dogs and cats at different life stages, despite concerns regarding nutritional adequacy and microbial contamination. The aim of this study was to evaluate both the nutritional and hygiene quality profile of RMBDs purchased in Germany. For this purpose, crude nutrients were assessed in 44 RMBDs and compared to declared values.

Ostrich meat is characterized by high nutritional value; however, it remains an exotic product in most countries worldwide. In Europe, only few data are available regarding its microbial contamination, prevalence of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria, and safety. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the microbiological quality and safety of ostrich meat samples ( = 55), each from one animal, produced in Bavaria, Germany.

Upper blepharoplasty is one of the most frequently performed aesthetic surgeries worldwide. While it is considered a low risk procedure, patients have high expectations regarding the outcome of elective surgery of the face and the majority of residents usually have little exposure to cosmetic surgeries in the early years of their training. All eligible patients who had undergone bilateral upper blepharoplasty at the senior author's institution between January 2016 and August 2019 were invited to participate in an online questionnaire.

The DIEP flap is currently considered the gold standard for autologous reconstructive breast surgery. Postoperative flap failure due to microvascular postanastomotic thrombotic occlusion is a rare but severe complication. Alteplase, a thrombolytic agent typically used in the setting of an ischemic stroke, myocardial infarction, or pulmonary embolism, has also been injected into the microcirculation of flaps as a rescue procedure due to imminent flap loss.
